Her Mentor Center

Hello to all our NABBW peers!

We come as a package - three Los Angeles psychotherapists who have been friends and colleagues for many years. In the late1990's our collective lives made a shift as we began to experience changes - in relationships with parents and children, as well as in our own health and careers. We joined together, learning from our struggles and sustaining each other along the way. We felt the power of support and realized that we made a good team. Out of this grew the need for something more - or perhaps different - that propelled us in an exciting direction.

At first we were uncertain as to what course this new adventure would take. As we talked, we began to shape an idea that would redefine our passion, make use of our professional skills, and help other women work through their own life transitions.

We initiated a study of mid life women, using focus groups to identify their needs, interviews to gather information, and research to supplement the data. We created a transition model as well as strategies to identify, understand and effect change. We pushed our limits, even developed technical skills, and in January of 2000 launched our website, www.HerMentorCenter.com.

The site offers information, powerful stories, and suggestions about how to benefit from other women's knowledge and experiences. Read and recognize yourself in the newsletters. Or submit your own story. The positive feedback we have received from our readers has encouraged us to write a book about this challenging time of change, opportunity and new directions.

The past several years have been a fertile and satisfying period for us. We have explored changes in our own lives and discovered how to support our fellow travelers. We join with you on this personal and universal journey.

Judith Sherven

"Many Baby Boomer women, whether single or in a committed relationship/marriage, still struggle with keeping their own identity intact while following wherever love and/or professional responsibility may want to lead them."

Judith Sherven, PhD didn't marry until her mid-forties -- to Jim Sniechowski, PhD, her partner in business, love, and play. During her twenty-two years of private practice, Judith kept seeing Boomer women who, despite the social and political gains of the women's movement, still felt at a loss about how to best navigate the challenges of dating and marriage.

And Judith didn't escape that sense of loss. She dated unsuccessfully for thirty years. Only after finally learning how to do what she now teaches -- what she calls Smart Dating for Success Every Time - did she meet and marry. Together, Judith & Jim founded their company, The Magic of Differences, Inc.

At the heart of her life-changing work is the principle that there is magic in the differences between two people. When they learn to recognize, respect and value their differences, only then can they trust that they are loved for who they really are. And that's the magic.

In their workshops and teleseminars, Judith & Jim are known for going deep below the surface of ordinary relationship issues to unlock the capacity to love and be loved.

Working with Jim, Judith developed an experiential program for the reconciliation of the genders. By bridging the gender gap and reducing fears of "the other," they have led thousands of men and women to discover and appreciate the sweetness and mutual gratitude inherent in how men and women can truly support and care for each other.

Concerned that many popular wedding traditions actually undermine marriage, Judith & Jim wrote their fourth book, The Smart Couple's Guide to the Wedding of Your Dreams: Planning Together for Less Stress and More Joy (New World Library). It is the only wedding book currently on the market for the bride AND the groom.

Judith is also the best-selling co-author of three other relationship books, Be Loved for Who You Really Are, The New Intimacy, and Opening to Love 365 Days a Year.

With their Magic of Differences approach, Judith & Jim routinely receive emails from all over the world, thanking them. Readers write about how these books saved their marriages, changed their ideas about love, conflict, romance, dating and much more. They also confess that what they read prompted them to give up dangerous fantasies and false expectations of relationships so that readers could now succeed when before they were hopelessly confused and/or lost.

Judith has been featured as a guest expert, along with Jim, on over 1000 radio and television shows including The View, 48 Hours, The O'Reilly Factor, CNN, and Canada AM. They've been featured in hundreds of newspapers and magazines and they write a regular column for Today's Black Woman magazine.

Karen Stephen, Ph.D. has devoted her professional life to taking the psychobabble out of psychotherapy. Choosing straight talk over straight jackets, she has brought hope and healing to thousands of clients through her thirty-seven year career. She believes that an engaging, direct approach, which goes beyond the traditional “uh-hum” and adds a touch of humor, is essential in the diagnosis and treatment of mental and emotional disorders.

Her focus over the last fifteen years has been on the care of women facing the challenges of mid-life-which she teasingly defines as anything between forty and death. She has witnessed the physical, mental and emotional breakdowns that can occur when multiple caretaking responsibilities collide with diminishing personal and emotional resources at this age. Her support groups for mid-life women are lovingly called the groups for the formerly strong!

Karen knows that self-care, having fun, setting limits, finding a passion, and minding one's own business can be difficult for women who have been selfless caregivers their entire lives. But she convinces women that these skills are learnable! With support and the proper tools, every woman can learn to accommodate drastic health changes, deal with addicted children, rear grandchildren, confront life-threatening illness, embrace living alone, set limits with style and grace, and overcome life-long emotional struggles. Karen's transparency in sharing her own victories and defeats is cited by her clients as her greatest gift as a therapist. Boomer Holiday Essay
By Sara Engram

My son's wish list is admirably simple this holiday season. He hopes for a black iPod Nano. That's a pricey item for a 13- year-old, but I've decided to look on the bright side - at least his wants are finely honed and focused.

Looking on the bright side also helps me sidestep an embarrassing truth - my relief that he hasn't repeated last year's Christmas wish. That request was one that any parent of a young adolescent ought to treasure, a wish far less expensive than an iPod Nano but exasperatingly more difficult to fulfill.

Instead, as the holiday weeks drew near, his request prompted frank conversations about the gap between our visions of ideal family life and the reality of the daily routine. You might think he had asked for something complicated and difficult to find - perhaps a rare Lego set or an outdated model plane. Nope - his wish was nothing more than spending an entire day with his family, playing board games in front of the fire or gathered in front of the electronic hearth to watch funny movies.

The Gift of Receiving
By Judith Sherven, Ph.D. & James Sniechowski, Ph.D.

You're busy checking off the items on your to-do list. Most of the gifts have been wrapped. And the holiday cards made it to the post office this morning. Oh, but you forgot about your daughter's teacher! And what to take to the Smith's annual Christmas Eve get together? And then the cookies for the school carnival and you used the last of the sugar in yesterday's brownies for the church fund raiser.

Then just at the same time that you are trying to figure out what to wear to the office party, what should occur? Your two tiny elves run into your bedroom loaded down with treasures they made at school, all meant just for you!

All I Want For Christmas Is:
By Georgia Richardson

Okay, that title may not be original, but my idea is. Hold on to your stocking stuffers' people cause I have a whopper of an idea for Christmas this year. I've been giving this gift buying-running-to-the-mall-fighting-the-crowds-going-into- debt-and-cooking-for-the-multitudes thing, a lot of thought. What say this year we reverse the roles? Hmm? I mean, who says that kids should get all the neat toys and gifts under the tree, anyway? And what about the best candy always going in THEIR stockings? Exactly WHO made up these rules? I know I didn't. You? More than likely, it was someone under the age of 18.

Here's some well-known, documented facts. They get to make a list, put anything under the sun on that list, regardless of price, and like that isn't lopsided enough, they make sure at least one item on the list is impossible to find and every single store in town is out. Even if you were smart enough to buy IT ahead of time and put IT on lay-away, IT comes up missing from the said store's lay-away when you go to pick IT up. Can you say “heartburn?”

What if we reversed the roles, and let the kids handle ALL of Christmas this year?

Your Life's Purpose
By Ginny Robertson

I believe we all have a purpose in being here. There is a fire burning deep within us waiting to be expressed. Some of us are clear on our purpose and are spending our time making sure we stay clear. Others of us may be exploring our purpose and looking at our options, while others may be new to the process. Wherever you are on this continuum, I encourage you to stay in the search.

Let me attempt to define “purpose.” Simply put, I believe our purpose is that which we are here to do. We feel our purpose in our hearts rather than in our heads. When we are clear on our purpose it can be a yardstick by which we measure how life is going and a guideline for making decisions.

Four Powerful Words
By Prill Boyle

One evening several years ago, as I was prodding my husband Michael to take another step up the career ladder, he looked me square in the eye and said, “I'm not ambitious. If you want fortune, fame, or fancier digs, be ambitious for yourself.” He told me that if I wanted to be President of the United States, he'd be happy to be First Gentleman, but he was tired of trying to live up to my idea of a successful husband.

Those four words-be ambitious for yourself-changed the tone of our relationship and opened a new chapter of my life. I took a critical look in the mirror and saw that part of why I'd been pressuring Michael and my children to be superstars was to make up for the fact that I hadn't been tapping my own talents. I also admitted that I wasn't loving my husband the way he deserved to be loved-for who he is.

One Hundred Steps
By Donna Shepherd

Did you know it takes walking 10,000 steps or 4.5 miles a day to lose one pound? I bought a pedometer and was disheartened to see that I walked about 3,000 steps in a day.

But on one particular occasion, one hundred steps made a difference.

My husband, Don, and I traveled to Columbus, Ohio for business. We checked in, got settled in our room, and Don departed in our car to attend a meeting. I basked in the peace and quiet, and took out a book to read.

'Zen Organize' Your Holiday Shopping
By Regina Leeds

Let me ask you a question about your typical gift buying holiday experience. Ready? Do you habitually wake up on January 1st bleary eyed, physically exhausted, wondering where the holidays went? Do you lie awake at night dreading the arrival of those bloated credit card bills? I have a shopping plan to help you create a new kind of holiday experience. One that will help you conserve money, time and physical energy. After all we jeopardize our ability to experience the deeper meaning of the season, if we devote all our energy to the secular aspects.

Why You Don't Write Your Book
By Suzanne Falter-Barns

In the ten years that I've taught people how to get on with their books and creative projects, I've noticed a phenomenon that I'll call “Author's Block.” Would-be writers can, indeed, sit down and work when pressed to it. The problem is that they're not so sure they want the pressure of being an author. But they do want it. But they don't. And so on.

Ah, the agony of getting on with your book.

Well, I'm here to diffuse that situation with a list of the key reasons we have trouble sticking to our writing or other creative projects. Perhaps this will help the next time you find yourself polishing doorknobs instead of sitting down to work.

Baby Boomer's Bible to Life After 50!
By Dr. Cherie Carter-Scott

Your Timeline

Take two pieces of paper. On one paper list everything you want to accomplish during your lifetime. Don't hold back, write down every thought, dream, fantasy, hope and wish on the paper. Include work, social hobbies, travel, volunteer work, adventures, and family. Then take the second piece of paper. The size of the paper you choose matters. The larger the paper, the longer you think you will live. Write your current age on the bottom of the paper, and at the top of the paper write your estimated anticipated end of life age (the one that you can imagine you might live until). Then draw a line between those two ages. Then, just like Ken, start writing down item by item on your timeline in whatever order and increments you choose. Something to note: if your knees are problematical, then put hiking, running, and tennis at the lower part of the chart rather than at the top. After you are complete with this exercise, take a close look at what you wrote on paper. Ask yourself, what do you observe? What do you notice about what you wrote, when you wrote it, and the number of items on your list?

"Myth-conceptions" (Part Two)
By Karen Baar

Last month, I wrote that one of the most important things I learned from writing my book, For My Next Act, is that much of the accepted knowledge about women our age is inaccurate or outdated. So misguided are some of the common “truths” about us that I call them “myths.” They include:

The myth of empty nest syndrome
The myth that all newly single (divorced and widowed) women are desperate to remarry
The myth that depression is inevitable during menopause
The myth that a newly single woman is terrified of having sex
The myth that midlife is a negative time for women

In October, I wrote about the myth of empty nest syndrome. This month, I'm tackling that huge bugbear, menopause, and specifically, whether menopause and depression are linked.

Women and Estate Planning: The Need to Be Nontraditional
By Patricia McHugh Lambert

I am now getting to the age where I have more friends working on their second marriage than their first. Some of those still in their first marriages often have in-laws or grandchildren living with them. And I can't tell you how many families I know where the wife is the primary bread winner and the husband the primary caregiver. With the mixture and matches that come with families in this modern world, it is becoming almost unusual to find a traditional family. .

Nevertheless, we women often view estate planning in a traditional way. Traditionally, the husband alone met with the attorney to do the estate planning while the wife was relegated to taking care of non-financial matters. Many husbands and their attorneys often felt that wives needed protection from themselves in the event the husbands were to die first. Such a traditional approach often caused great financial and emotional burdens on the wife.

Winterizing your Skin!
Winters' cold temperatures coupled with stinging winds can cause bad cases of dry, chapped skin. Prevention is the key to having healthy, happy skin throughout the season.
< br> 1. Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate. Exfoliating speeds up the process of shedding the dead skin cells. You want to do this because it reveals the healthy skin underneath. Dry flaking skin is gray and dull, healthy new skin has a youthful glow to it. You may exfoliate 1 - 3 times a week.

2. Moisturize. This is a daily MUST for ALL skin types! Your daytime moisturizer should have at LEAST an SPF-8 in it to protect you from the sun. Night time moisturizing helps re- hydrate your skin.

3. Protect. Then sun is always the nemesis to your skin. 90% of the aging of your skin can be avoided simply by avoiding the sun! Make sure the sun protection products you use have broad spectrum protection (protect against UVA (aging) and UVB (burning and cancer) rays.

If you have ANY questions about the care and feeding of your skin, please do not hesitate to email me at: Danitajones@myarbonne.com

Her new book, Mothers Who Cry in the Night, originated as she would awaken in the middle of the night with feelings of helplessness, knowing that her son's behavior was spiraling out of control, the only thing she could do in those wee dark hours would be to go to her computer and start writing to relieve her fears. It takes the reader through those long lonely nights, giving them strategies to turn these out of control feelings around, and to learn how to rebuild themselves to understand that God and Love are the foundation that they can constantly return to when these dark nights of the soul envelope them.

The purpose of The Sequoia Seed is to remind us that potential never truly dies. The Giant Sequoia tree grows to over 250' tall and lives for centuries. Yet it begins as a tiny seed smaller than a flake of oatmeal. The seed can lay dormant for decades before the heat of a forest fire loosens its cone and releases it to take root. Potential never dies.

Like that seed, our destinies are often set in motion by our own personal fires. A health crisis, the loss of a loved one, the acceptance of a truth not before seen - these are the infernos that reduce our ideologies to ashes and give birth to new sight. These are the precious moments when we can release our grip on old realities and open ourselves up to the budding possibilities of new life.

The Sequoia Seed deftly strengthens your dream's will to live, as it convinces you that your fear is unfounded. Each chapter will guide you confidently toward a life that has been patiently waiting for you.
