Our weekly "Reading the Bible in Hebrew" meeting will be held this Monday, June 30, 2008, at 7:00 p.m. at the Center for Biblical Hebrew in Phoenix
(Located at 400 West Camelback Rd. #103, Phoenix, AZ)
We are including this section with the mailing to all members of our mailing list even though it represents a local Phoenix Arizona function. We would like to share with you some of the excitement we feel about studying this week's Torah reading and make it easy for you to find it wherever you are. We encourage you to read some of the commentary links and indulge in studying the stories and morals of the Torah for yourself. | |

Mapping the Sonic Rainbow
 For the past 3000 years music and colors has been acknowledged by Jewish tradition as powerful facets of the Hebrew letters. Here is what happens when colors and music express themselves simultaneously in a composer's brain: People with synesthesia experience a joining of the senses.
For example, a word will have a taste -- or music will be colourful, as it was for Messiaen. These are not mnemonic associations; the synesthete cannot help experiencing the shapes, colours, and/or tastes provoked by real-world stimuli. The condition -- or ability, depending on how you see it -- is poorly understood, and it is not known how many synesthetes there are, although they are prominent in creative fields. Known or suspected synesthetes include Vladimir Nabokov, physicist Richard Feynman and painter David Hockney; the jury's still out on Jimi Hendrix and Wassily Kandinsky.
