Dear Friends,
Our weekly "Reading the Bible in Hebrew" meeting will be held this Monday, May 12, 2008, at 7:00 p.m. at the Center for Biblical Hebrew in Phoenix (Located at 400 West Camelback Rd. #103, Phoenix, AZ)
We are including this section with the mailing to all members of our mailing list even though it represents a local Phoenix Arizona function. We would like to share with you some of the excitement we feel about studying this week's Torah reading and make it easy for you to find it wherever you are. We encourage you to read some of the commentary links and indulge in studying the stories and morals of the Torah for yourself. | |

KaVaNah - a word on Hebrew prayer
The story is told of the famous rabbi and the bus driver who arrive in heaven
for Judgement at the same moment. The rabbi is asked to step aside to allow
the bus driver to go right through the Pearly Gates to a luxurious abode. The
rabbi asks the gatekeeper, "how can it be that I, a rabbi of reknown, must
wait here while that simple bus driver is ushered straight into heaven?"
The reply: "Rabbi, whenever you spoke in the synagogue, people would fall
asleep; whenever he drove his bus, people would pray!"
The moral of the story of course is that to be effective, prayer, of whatever form, must be more than inspiring rhetoric or flawless recitation - prayer must be done with due intentionality and mindfulness. In Hebrew the necessary ingredient for prayers that move above and beyond the walls of our community buildings is "KaVaNah" ...
