Assessments & EI

One of the components of EI is self awareness. So how self aware are you? Are you aware of your strengths and weaknesses as a manager? Do you boss people around? Are you a control freak? Are you a good coach? The DISC assessment is a behavioral assessment which measures four primary emotions - Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness. The DISC assessment can help people gain knowledge, insight and perhaps the courage to change. If you are interested in completing a DISC assessment online, send me an email and I will send you an entry code. It takes approximately 20 minutes to complete the online DISC. Upon completion, I will send you a comprehensive DISC report.

Since 1994, I have been growing my business through referrals. If you know of any organization or association that hires speakers, trainers, or needs assessment tools please let me know. 10% of any booking will go back to you. I hope our paths cross again in 2008.

Greetings!

It's January 8th and so far I'm sticking to my New Year's resolution which is giving up Diet Pepsi. My Diet Pepsi addiction goes way back, I actually started drinking TAB when I was in High School, over thirty years ago. Change is good! I feel better and I'm saving money. What is your New Year's resolution at work? Does it involve getting more organized and simplifying? How about cleaning out that email box. Whatever it is, give yourself at least a month to change behavior.
Training Fundamentals
If you are delivering any kind of training - Six Sigma training, management training, aerobics training, computer training - always get to the room early to set up, say hello to each person, try to remember everyone's name, adhere to the schedule, and have fun! Establishing ground rules is also a great practice. Right before the holidays, I facilitated a meeting for a corporate client. The group decided that no cell phones were allowed. We even determined consequences, which in this case was to sing a song if your cell phone rang. Around 2:00PM, we had a fabulous solo performance of Feliz Navidad which brought some fun to a long day.

Emotional Intelligence - EI

Every business leader knows a story about a highly skilled, highly trained employee who was promoted into a leadership position and failed miserably. Why do some highly competent technical people fail at leading others and others do it with ease? Research has shown that people with a high degree of Emotional Intelligence have a tendency to make great leaders.[i] According to the research gathered by Daniel Goleman, Emotional Intelligence can be broken down into five components:

  • Self-awareness - the ability to recognize and understand your moods, emotions, and drives as well as there effect on others.
  • Self-regulation - the ability to control or redirect your impulses especially when they are negative or disruptive. The ability to think before you act, to maintain professionalism at all times.
  • Motivation - a passion to work for reasons that go beyond money or status.
  • Empathy - the ability to understand where other people are coming from.
  • Social Skill - the proficiency to build relationships and influence others.

Process Excellence Leaders need to first understand themselves and then develop social skills to build internal and external networks. I once heard a Sr. Executive say to me that his wife was his social crutch. In other words, his wife was able to engage others in conversation during social situations. Another time, during a role play exercise, I witnessed a Black Belt facilitating a meeting where the participants were very hostile. The Black Belt had no idea how and when to use empathy to calm the participants down.

[i] Daniel Goleman's research at nearly 200 large, global companies revealed to EI is tied to great leadership and measurable business results.
