President's Message

Rita's photo

Greetings!

What an exciting summer we are all having this year.  I have hardly had any time to sit down.  Are you going on vacation? Outer Banks, Lake Erie Islands, or are you staying home to work on home projects?  Regardless of what you choose to do, we here at ASID Ohio North hope you have more inspiration and excitement than you can hope for.

We have some student chapters to be very proud of. Virginia Marti has received recognition from ASID's national magazine for students for their pro-bono projects helping those with cancer -  ASID Access Spring 2012. VMCAD is led by Cristina McCarthy, Allied ASID, our in-coming Chapter President. She is doing amazing things with her students, and I have been blessed to have her as my President-Elect. Also, the University of Akron is having a social on August 11th, Noon at the Munroe Falls Metro Park. It is a great opportunity to swim, get some sun, and enjoy each other's company. Bring a dish to share. Friend and family are welcome.  I plan on being there with my family.  It should be a blast!

If you are willing to head South of Cleveland this summer, checkout some of my personal favorite spots to eat, hang-out, or explore.

o   Akron Art Museum (Thursday nights have live entertainment)

o   Crave (A must visit after the Art Museum, and the best martinis in Akron)

o   Hower House (A special place for our U of A students and an amazing eclectic Victorian mansion to visit)

o   Luigi's Pizza, An Akron institution since 1949

o   Stan Hywet ( Vintage Base Ball, Shakespeare on the lawn, and The Art of Living Beautifully)

o   Gervasi Vineyards in Canton (Wine, amazing food and a great atmosphere)

o   Bicycle riding on the Towpath, The Summit County leg is 100% complete

o   Pub Bricco, Right off the Towpath in Merriman Valley

o   Dante Boccuzzi (I haven't been there yet, but I know I will be!)

I hope to see you at some upcoming events which include CEU's, social and the Annual Meeting planned for September 19th.

Have a great July and see you soon.

Sincerely,
Rita Amonett, ASID
2011-2012 ASID Ohio North Chapter President

GET YOUR MO-JO ON

I'm making an eclectic bunch of suggestions this month because, frankly, I'm feeling a little lethargic from the heat and I can't make up my mind what I should be doing (or find the energy to do it). Here's hoping that one of these spark your motivation to get out of the house...

Horse Play in the Valley

Horses and their riders will be center stage today through July 21 at the annual Chagrin Valley Hunter Jumper Classic being held at the Cleveland Metro parks Polo Field in Moreland Hills. The highlight is the Cleveland Grand Prix - the very first jumping grand prix in North America - which debuted at the polo field in 1965. The rain-or-shine events begin daily at 8 a.m. Admission is free on select days throughout the show. Otherwise, general admission ranges from $3 to $10, while select box seats will set you back considerably more. Through July 21. For more info. call 330-903-9915

Young Architects Exhibit at Children's Museum

Love 'em or hate 'em it would be nice to have an architect in the family when you're ready to build that little house to retire to.   The Children's Museum just made that a whole lot easier with its newest exhibit. Young Architects: Designing the Future aims at exposing the younger set to the basic principles behind design - math, physics, and mechanics - in a fun, experiential fashion. In practical terms, that means setting the wee ones loose among hundreds of assorted building blocks: all shapes, sizes, colors, and materials. Inspiration will be provided by photos of iconic buildings created by renowned architects like Gehry and others. The exhibit will be on display through September 30. The museum is open every day from 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Admission is $7 for everyone age 1 and older. Find out more on the website.  www.clevelandchildrensmuseum.org

July 27 - July 28. For more info visit www.thesummermarket.com

Vintage Ohio Wine Festival

I know what drinkers some of you designers are so I had to mention this great festival. Tons of wineries and food and song for the enjoying. Aug 3 - Aug. 4. For more info go to www.visitvintageohio.com
