Australia has announced that it will release an additional AUD 8 million funding over four years to support the Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries and Food Security (CTI-CFF).  Prime Minister Julia Gillard made the announcement during a breakfast function hosted by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the sidelines of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Brazil on June 20, 2012.

"We have a large stake in the blue economy," Ms Gillard said noting that there are more than 1.5 billion people in developing countries in the region rely on the ocean for food and jobs. Apart from the CTI-CFF, Australia will also support Pacific Island countries address illegal fishing and ecosystem destruction.

In 2009, the Australian Government committed to a phased multi-year program of support to the CTI that will evolve and respond as the Initiative grows. The first stage of support, being implemented from 2010-2012, is focused on building foundations and momentum for the CTI-CFF. The second phase, expected to be implemented from 2012, will respond to the evolution of the CTI-CFF from a 'start-up' to an 'implementation' phase, and will be characterized by a longer-term approach to programming based around identified priorities.

CTI-CFF Presents Paper on Sustainable Development and the Blue Economy at Rio+20

The CTI-CFF Interim Regional Secretariat presented a white paper illustrating how the initiative has become a model for implementation of sustainable development and the blue economy commitments at the sidelines of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20). CTI-CFF Executive Chair Dr. Suseno Sukoyono presented the paper at the Indonesia Pavilion in Rio de Janeiro on June 19, 2012. The paper, developed by the CTI-CFF Interim Regional Secretariat and partners, focused on how the Rio+20 priorities captured the joint priorities and commitments of the CTI member countries and reflected their regional and national plans of action.

In his presentation, Dr. Sukoyono noted that the corresponding themes and priority attentions in Rio+20 present an opportunity for CTI-CFF as a collaborative framework to speed up implementation and action on coral reef, fisheries and food security related issues. He also stressed that CTI member countries  are keen  to  discuss  and  work  with  other participants at Rio+20 to be able to deliver a strong outcome for oceans, fisheries and biodiversity in light of their economic, social and environmental significance. Science to Action: CTI-CFF Takes Center Stage at the 12th International Coral Reef Symposium

The 12th International Coral Reef Symposium, the world's leading coral reef science conference held once every four years, will begin Monday, July 9, in Cairns, Australia with the CTI-CFF taking center stage  as the model for linking science to policy and action.

There will be four scientific mini-symposia that will focus on the Coral Triangle and will tackle the following topics: marine protected area management; regional scale design and local scale actions for marine conservation; coral bleaching and science to policy efforts. Another session on economic valuation and market based conservation will also feature some presentations from the CTI-CFF.

The CTI-CFF Secretariat  will also host an Idea Market Place booth where Coral Triangle member countries can present their research ideas and pitch them to the scientists attending the conference and vice versa.

The Market Place will also have daily brownbag lunches to discuss the most recent scientific studies in the Coral Triangle, such as the State of the Coral Triangle Reports and the Reefs at Risk in the Coral Triangle Reports as well as multi-media presentations. There will also be a Coral Triangle Book signing activity.

Prior to the conference, there will be a pre-meeting on July 7 entitled "Science and Governance in the Center of Global Marine Biodiversity: The State of the Coral Triangle Reports"while a media mixer and mini forum will also be held on the Coral Triangle and Food Security.
