Coral Triangle Countries Rally Donors to Expand CTI-CFF Support Base

Ministers of Conservation, Environment, Fisheries, and Science from the six Coral Triangle countries rallied donors to infuse fresh technical and financial support to protect the richest marine biodiversity area in the world during the first Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI) High Level Financial Roundtable held in Manila on May 3, 2012. The roundtable was held as a side event of the 45th Annual Board of Governors' Meeting of the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Datuk Seri Panglima Dr. Maximus Ongkili, Chair of the CTI Council of Ministers thanked partners for their support and urged prospective funders and representatives from the private sector and finance ministries to expand the support base for the CTI. "You will also be the beneficiary of efforts to conserve the Coral Triangle marine as the initiatives do not only involve sustainability programs but also climate change adaptation," said Ongkili, who is also Malaysia's Science, Technology and Innovation Minister. Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI) member countries agreed to a target of September 2012 to finalize a region-wide monitoring and evaluation system at the first formal meeting of the CTI Monitoring and Evaluation Working Group (MEWG) held on April 25 and 28, 2012 in Manila, Philippines. The MEWG, which met for the first time since March 2009, reviewed over thirty indicators to track achievement towards marine and coastal conservation goals set out in the CTI Regional Plan of Action and link these with economic development and food security.  The indicators included targets to improve fisheries management, mitigate the impacts of climate change and develop a region-wide Marine Protected Area System. The indicators will be further refined by other CTI technical working groups and submitted for adoption at the next 8th CTI Senior Officials Meeting in October 2012 together with an MEWG work and financial plan. Philippine and Malaysian Fishermen Cooperate in Managing Live Reef Fish Trade

In support of the Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reef, Fisheries and Food Security's goal to reduce destructive fishing practices,  fishermen and commercial fish traders from Sabah, Malaysia and Palawan, Philippines attended a roundtable discussion on April 6-13, 2012 in Puerto Princesa to collaborate on live reef fish trade management and increase trans-boundary cooperation to reduce destructive fishing practices. Live reef fish trade involves the capture of reef fish which are kept alive for sale and consumption and often employs destructive fishing practices that can have catastrophic results including fish stock collapse and coral reef destruction.  CTI MPA Learning Network Kicks Off Activities in Bali

The CTI-CFF Marine Protected Area (MPA) Learning Network conducted its first round of activities in Bali, Indonesia on March 26-30, 2012 in conjunction with 3rd CTI Regional Exchange on Designing and Supporting Regional and National MPA systems. Network members visited Nusa Penida MPA and learned about effective tools and management practices such as data collection and zoning process; public consultation and government commitment; and the development of a learning site. Network members also discussed specific activities needed to advance the Coral Triangle MPA System in the next 12-18 months.

Second Coral Triangle Fishers Forum to be Held in Fiji

Local fishers, seafood company representatives, researchers and other stakeholders are set to gather in Suva, Fiji from June 18-22, 2012 for the second Coral Triangle Fishers' Forum. The event is expected to bring together approximately 100 participants to identify strategies and models for effective partnerships on seafood traceability, reducing illegal, unregulated and unreported (IUU) fishing and achieving long-term sustainability and security in the seafood sector. The event aims to provide a venue for participants to share experiences on improving traceability, including catch documentation, technologies and their anti-IUU fishing characteristics from Coral Triangle and regional fisheries, identifying obstacles, key issues and priorities, among others.

CTI-CFF Achievements to be Showcased at Rio+20

The CTI-CFF Regional Secretariat, in collaboration with the CTI National Coordinating Committees  and partner organizations, is supporting the Government of Indonesia in hosting a high-level side event at the Leaders' Summit component of  Rio+20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development . The event, which is scheduled on June 21, 2012 from 7-8 PM, will showcase the CTI's achievements in furthering the priority themes of Rio+20. With the conference's focus on  "people  centred  biodiversity  conservation",  CTI-CFF member countries  are keen  to  discuss  and  work  with  other  Rio+20 participants to be able to deliver a strong outcome for oceans, fisheries, and biodiversity taking into account their economic, social and environmental significance. Celebrate Coral Triangle Day on June 9
 
The CTI-CFF Regional Secretariat, together with the  CTI National Coordinating Committees and partner organizations, is set to launch the first annual celebration of the Coral Triangle Day on June 9,  2012, in conjunction with World Oceans Day.

This year's theme is "Shared Waters, Shared Solutions: Coming Together as One for the World's Center of Marine Life-The Coral Triangle."  The event is envisioned to be an annual, open-sourced activity that brings together individuals, organizations, private sector and governments on one special day of the year to shed light on ocean conservation and the numerous ways to protect and conserve the Coral Triangle.  MORE
