New UC and Spanish Teacher:

We are happy to announce we have hired our UC teacher to take Nicole's position.  Jia Acree is a new teacher to the profession but has had some incredible experiences working with children.  She recently completed her student teaching under a master teacher in the Wilder School District.  She also was a teacher for the BSU Summer Literacy Academy held at Anser this summer.  Jia is married and has a three year old son.  We know she is going to be a great fit for the UC team and the school as a whole.

We are also very excited to announce our new Spanish Teacher her name is Danielle (Dani) Owen.  She just moved here from Wisconsin and is a first year teacher.  She's passionate when she talks about education and students and will be a fantastic fit for Anser.

Did you hear the exciting news?

Anser will be contracting with local refugee service organization Create Common Good to provide our lunches this year. CCG has an organic farm and a culinary arts training program that provide training and employment for refugees as they transition into our community. They also have a widely recognized chef, Brent Southcombe, who will be in charge of creating our menus and insuring that the lunches our students receive will be fresh, nutritious and delicious.  Anser families have been invited to come visit the farm and pull a few weeds  on Thursday August 2 at 9:30am if you would like to see where your child's food is growing!! Here is a map to the farm: http://goo.gl/maps/9j9B  and here is a link to the Create Common Good website: http://www.createcommongood.org/ Please RSVP to Heather Dennis at hdennis@ansercharterschool.org if you plan to visit the farm so we will be prepared and bring a hat, garden gloves and a water bottle.

Junior High Fall Adventure Chaperones needed:

September 17 - 21, 2012

Our fall adventure trip has become a cherished tradition for our students, parents and teachers.  It is time well spent getting to know each other and pushing limits.  We travel to McCall to enjoy camping, hiking and a high ropes course.  Parents, we need you!!!  Please consider being a driver-chaperone for this experience.  Our junior high students go up in two separate groups - organized by homeroom crews.  Diane and Allyson's crew will be in McCall Monday - Wednesday (9/17 - 9/19) and Fawn and Kelly's crews will be in McCall Wednesday - Friday (9/19 - 9/21).  We really need volunteers who can drive students and stay to chaperone the camping and the ropes course activities.  To volunteer, please contact Kelly McLeod at  kmcleod@ansercharterschool.org.

Wanted to say Good-Bye to Melissa Allen?
The staff will be getting together to say goodbye and celebrate long-time Anser teacher Mellisa Allen's departure. If you would like to drop off a card or contribute to her going away gift please feel free to do so on Monday, August 20th. The office will be open and you can drop off any notes, cards etc... at that time.

Families with Kindergarten and 7th grade students:

Please remember that the immunization requirements for students entering Kindergarten and 7th grade have been changed recently. It is very important that you make an appointment prior to registration in mid August so that you can turn in the forms we are required by law to have for each student at these grades.  If your family does not vaccinate, you can request a waiver form from Abby McLean at amclean@ansercharterschool.org.  A waiver or proof of immunization is required for registration.

Anser Community Parent to Parent Resource Manual

Thank you to our parents who have been sharing resources for our Anser Community Parent to Parent resource manual.  We hope to publish it when school resumes and we cannot do this without your contributions.  If you are familiar with a tutor, physician, social worker or other resource that you know would be good for kids, please take a moment to complete both pages of the survey and share your knowledge.  For more information you can review the attached explanation of the project.  For your convenience - here is the link to the brief survey which you can complete as many times as you like to share all of the great resources you may have.   Click here for the Anser Charter School recommendation form!  Thank you in advance for your kind attention to this message and for your consideration about completing the survey.   Please do not hesitate to contact Lisa Cates at  lcates@ansercharterschool.org  should you have any questions. Thank you for your help to make the Anser "Parent to Parent" Resource Manual become a reality.

Anser "Parent to Parent" Resource Manual

One of the hardest parts of being a parent is knowing whom to trust when it comes to the well being of our families. When you or someone you love needs help, the task of finding the right person can be daunting.

It is not unusual for parents to ask Anser Crewleaders for recommendations but as you know, we are not authorized to do this.  However we know there is a wealth of great experience within our Anser community that could help parents looking for recommendations.  Thus we decided to bring together those who have done the work to find a wonderful resource with those who are seeking recommendations and the idea of the Anser "Parent to Parent" resource manual was born.

The concept is simple and confidential.  We are asking our parent community to let us know of any service providers (counselors, psychologists, pediatricians, service coordination agencies, tutors, etc) whom they would recommend to their own family members.  We will take all of the information we receive and assemble it into a resource manual available to Anser families on the password protected portion of our website.

So now we are asking for parents who have done the work to find a wonderful resource for your own family to please share that information with other families who may be going through similar times.   We are using Survey Monkey and we have tried to keep the process as simple as possible.  It will ask only a few short questions about the resource you think may be helpful to another family.   Please answer the questions as best you can and include any information you would feel would help ease the burden of someone else looking for help.   You can complete the survey as many times as you would like to share as many resources as possible.

Your personal information will remain confidential and not be included in the Anser "Parent to Parent" Resource Manual; however you can offer to further discuss your experience with other parents.  Should you do so, Anser will not give your contact information to other parents but rather, would give to you the name and contact information of the person who wants to speak with you and then you can determine if you want to call them or not to share your feedback about that resource.

Parenting is never easy, and looking for help when we need it can make us feel more alone than ever. Please help remind each other that we are not alone, we are a community and we are stronger together.

Here is a link to our survey - thank you in advance for your kind attention to this message and for your consideration about completing the survey.

Click here for the Anser Charter School recommendation form!

Please do not hesitate to contact Lisa Cates at lcates@ansercharterschool.org should you have any questions.    Thank you for your help to make the Anser "Parent to Parent" Resource Manual become a reality.

Math Ideas!

We have received several inquiries from parents about ideas for math support to help students who may want to reinforce their learning over the summer.  In response we have collected the following resources from our fellow Anser Crewleaders:

  1. Apangea.  Every student in the state has access to this program and they can sign up through their parents or through their teacher.  http://www.apangea.com
  2. Khan academy has some great instructional videos but the website can be difficult to navigate when trying to find specific content. http://www.khanacademy.org
  3. Bridge books, which are available at Idaho book and school, are another way for students to keep math skills sharpened in the summer.
  4. The IXL program: http://www.ixl.com
  5. Alex:  They have a full math intervention program as well as a math fact fluency program.  It is fee based ($40.00 per year). www.aleks.com
  6. The illuminations website is sponsored by the National Teachers of Mathematics. If you go to the activities section, it has lots of games and activities.  http://illuminations.nctm.org/
