 | Re-commitment Letters are Due: FEBRUARY 10th
| | |
If Anser does not receive a form from you by February 10th we will open your child's enrollment spot in the Anser lottery, to be held on Thursday February 16th. If you have siblings of your students that are not enrolled yet at Anser, please be sure to fill out a lottery application form for them to remain on the waiting list. We of course want to see each and every one of our students back next year, so please help us complete this important step of getting ready to welcome the newest Anser families next year.

 | Anser Lottery: Thursday February 16th: | | |
When we ask most of our families how they heard about Anser, they tell us, they had a friend or acquaintance whose children were enrolled and told them about the great education their students were receiving. As we approach the annual lottery we hope you will be Good Will Ambassadors for the school. Please let your friends, families, co-workers, sports team buddies, church friends, neighbors and the person behind you in the grocery line know what you like about Anser and how they can apply. Keeping the school full helps to insure our financial strength and allows us to offer our great programs to new students. Tell your friends about the following three things:
- Everything they need to know about applying is on our website.
- We will be doing tours and an Open House during January and February. Check out the dates on the website.
- The deadline for submitting applications is February 15th at 1:oopm so don't delay!

 | Attention Ski Team:
| | |
The first race will be this Saturday at 1:30. If you will be
participating, please contact me so we have a list of who will be
heading up to Bogus. If you need a discounted pass, it is important
that I get the card to you and that you have a student ID.
I will probably be on the course before your race, so when I have
a list of the students participating, I am hoping to find a parent
volunteer to be outside the Pioneer Lodge and to help direct those
racers to their course and answer any questions you may have.
If you have any problems with my spam blocker, just request to be
added and once I see that request, your email will be accepted.
I know it's been a long wait, but I hope everyone gets a chance to
head up there on Saturday. I will send out an email before Saturday
with a meeting time and last minute instructions.

 | A little bit of information about our K-5 math program, Investigations: | | |
|
An Introduction to Early Algebra in Investigations
|
|
"For many adults, algebra means symbolic notation and equations. We may have done well or poorly in high school algebra, but either way, we often have no sense that those equations we manipulated had any meaning beyond what was required to pass the course. Yet ... students in kindergarten through fifth grade are thinking about ideas that are at the heart of algebra. In the course of working on arithmetic, students notice regularities that might, in later years, be expressed with symbols and equations. These ideas offer opportunities for rich mathematical investigation and discussion." (Russell et. al., 2006.)
In Investigations early algebra ideas are addressed in two major ways: (1) work within the counting, number, and operations units focusing on generalizations that arise in the course of students' study of numbers and operations, and (2) one unit at each grade level about patterns, functions and change.
One reason for such explicit and in-depth attention is that "the work of generalizing and justifying in the elementary classroom has the potential of enhancing the learning of all students. ... Teacher collaborators report to us that students who tend to have difficulty in mathematics become stronger mathematical thinkers through this work. ... At the same time, students who generally outperform their peers in mathematics find this content challenging and stimulating." (

|
The Patterns, Functions, and Change Strand
|
|
The Investigations curriculum includes a unit focused on patterns, functions, and change at each grade. The result is "a coherent K-5 strand that starts with repeating patterns and number sequences in Grades K and 1, connects to functional relationships beginning in Grade 2, and focuses on linear and nonlinear change in Grades 3-5. Students study relationships that follow rules (such as the relationship between the number of windows in a building and the number of floors if the building has a fixed number of windows per floor) and relationships that do not follow rules (such as the relationship between temperature and time in Grade 3 and between plant growth and time in Grade 4). They work extensively with ways of representing [and describing] these relationships: in words, with numbers, [and] with tables and graphs... These units reinforce and connect with work in other units on multiplication, ratio, area, volume, and graphing."

 | BOX TOPS for Education:
| | We are still collecting box tops for education. There are well over 200 products that participate in the Box Tops for Education program - everything from cereal to frozen food, paper towels to office and school supplies and even trash bags! To jump start the effort, Sam has deposited 200 box tops in the collection box and has posted a list of participating products on the bulletin board next to it. Let's start filling that collection box and earn some cash for ANSER!
