 Re-commitment Letters are Due:

All Anser families should receive recommitment letters by this weekend. In order to continue your student's enrollment next year you must return this form no later than February 10th. If Anser does not receive a form from you we will open your child's enrollment spot in the Anser lottery, to be held on Thursday February 16th. If you have siblings of your students that are not enrolled yet at Anser, please be sure to fill out a lottery application form for them to remain on the waiting list. We of course want to see each and every one of our students back next year, so please help us complete this important step of getting ready to welcome the newest Anser families next year.

 Anser Lottery: Thursday February 16th:

When we ask most of our families how they heard about Anser, they tell us, they had a friend or acquaintance  whose children were enrolled and told them about the great education their students were receiving. As we approach the annual lottery we hope you will be Good Will Ambassadors for the school. Please let your friends, families, co-workers, sports team buddies, church friends, neighbors and the person behind you in the grocery line know what you like about Anser and how they can apply. Keeping the school full helps to insure our financial strength and allows us to offer our great programs to new students. Tell your friends about the following three things:

  1. Everything they need to know about applying is on our website.
  2. We will be doing tours and an Open House during January and February. Check out the dates on the website.
  3. The deadline for submitting applications is February 15th at 1:oopm so don't delay!

 Attention 8th grade parents:

In February most local area Junior Highs begin setting the dates of their 9th grade registration. This means it is important for parents to be in contact  in the next few weeks with the school their student will attend in 9th grade.  The process is generally very simple, involving attending a registration meeting at your neighborhood school where counselors will help your student design a schedule that will fit their interests and needs. Anser Junior High teachers are happy to speak with parents who may have questions about the placement of their student and students are excused from classes to attend these sessions which generally occur during the school day. As Anser receives the dates of these registration times we will inform families through the Junior High newsletter. Each year we are sad to see our fledglings go, but we know they are ready and prepared to fly high in their next educational adventure.

Check out who was in P.E.

We had the great privilege of having Undre Revis visit with Junior High.  He has contracted with Debbie Allen and the late, great Michael Jackson as a choreographer.  He taught us choreography and had us do mock grammy awards tryouts! Great fun!  Flyers for Undre's classes are outside the office.

December 16th-Professional Development:

Professional Development - December 16, 2011

We always appreciate our Board of Trustees and our families who understand how important professional development is to our staff in order to grow as professionals and teach your children at the very highest level possible.  This year, the staff made a commitment of letting the board and families know how this time is spent.

The first part of our professional development Suzanne gathered the crew for our ritual Crew Meeting and reading.  Staff played a fun game and discussed the difference between using a game and an initiative during classroom Crew Meetings.  Staff was also introduced to "unpacking learning targets" for students so students were very clear of the expectations and thoroughly understood the vocabulary.

Time was then spent on sharing the two Expeditionary Learning Institutes teachers attended the first part of December.  Melissa, Dolly, Lisa and Nicole attended a Differentiation Institute while Michelle and Giselle attended an Assessment Institute.

Mid morning the English Language Arts Plate to Plaque group presented. This group consists of Sarah W., Kelly S., Jennifer, Brianna, Melissa, Allyson, Diane and Fawn.  The team updated us on the work they have been doing in comparing the current Idaho State Content Standards to the Common Core State Standards that the state has now adopted.  These comparisons are focused in the areas of grammar, conventions and sentence structure at this time.  Teachers then did a Gallery Walk in order to help determine what they needed to be aware of with the new Common Core State Standards.

After a short break the Math Plate to Plaque group did a workshop on aligning addition models and strategies with the Common Core State Standards at each grade level.  Anne, Sara G., Dolly, Giselle, Michelle, Kelly M., Bindy and Heather B. are members in this group.

Teachers were first asked to write down all the models they currently use in their classrooms.  These were then placed on a chart for all to view.

They were then given sets of various models and a chart with the categories Enactive (manipulating and or "acting out" a strategy), Iconic (using pictures and/or manipulatives) and Symbolic (using numbers and equations) to place the models. Once complete, our discussion centered on the fact that when a new mathematical concept is learned, most students move back to the iconic stage of development in order to build conceptual understanding.  An example of this would be when students in 3rd grade begin learning multiplication.  Most will begin working with groups of manipulatives modeling a problem (e.g. I have 3 cupcakes with 3 candies on each...students might place three blocks on the table with 3 small manipulatives on each block), move on to arrays and pictures of groups, then to the actual algorithm. We also discussed the fact that within each category are various levels of development as well.  Understanding children's development in mathematics along with their thinking allows our teachers to really know what students understand mathematically and how to move them forward to the next level. When children begin with the algorithm, some may have difficulty as they were not given the scaffolding they may have needed in order to really understand what the numbers actually mean.  The next step for this team will be to place all of these models in a booklet for teachers use when planning their lessons.

Staff spent the last hour or so of the day planning in their classrooms before we met for some holiday cheer before we all departed for winter break

Anser UC U13 Lacrosse

It may be possible that we can get all Anser UC boys together on the same lacrosse team if they are interested.  Fielding our own team of 20 boys would be difficult but we are working to have the opportunity to combine the Anser boys on a single U13 lacrosse team.  If your son would be interested in playing on that team please contact Peter Anderson at 336-7020 or Jim Harper at 345-1051.

BOX TOPS for Education- $218.60 check was received from Box Top Donations!
Recently, 8th-grader, Sam Gottsch, was depositing some lids in the Pink Yoplait Labels for breast cancer collection box when he noticed the Box Tops for Education collection box sitting next to it.  When he looked inside, he was mighty surprised to find very few box tops.  Sam is asking everyone at ANSER to look around their house to see if they have any box tops to contribute.  There are well over 200 products that participate in the Box Tops for Education program - everything from cereal to frozen food, paper towels to office and school supplies and even trash bags!  To jump start the effort, Sam has deposited 200 box tops in the collection box and has posted a list of participating products on the bulletin board next to it.  Let's start filling that collection box and earn some cash for ANSER!

Snow sports CBC and Elective Update

Dear Parents and Staff,

For the students  who are registered for snow sports next week, January 18th and 19th we have arranged an alternative plan.  Students will be going to Jump Time Idaho for a ski conditioning and air awareness class that Jump Time does with various ski teams around Boise.  They will be helping students work on their movement in preparation for snow sports.  They are asking that parents go online to http://jumptimeidaho.com/common/home.php and fill out the liability waiver that is at the bottom of the page.  Please read the instructions carefully.  It is best if you register yourself, then add your child/ren's names.  Once you are in their electronic system, whenever you return to Jump Time, you will already be registered.  If you do not have access to the internet, I will provide paper forms, but the computer form is preferred.   A link to the Jump Time website will also be on the school website.   Also, students will be transported by bus to Jump Time in order to eliminate any further complications.Students will be returning form Jump Time and be ready for pick-up at the normal release time.

Because this is the second week of no snow sports, we will be evaluating what happens next with regard to the continuation of snow sports this session.    Please continue to be patient as we work out all of the kinks; this is the first time in the 12 years this program has run at Anser that we have not had snow in time.  We are navigating very new water and trying to create the very best experience for the students affected.

Jr. High Electives and Yearbook
JH Yearbook NEEDS YOU!  If you are a junior high student interested in helping to collect and organize photos for the yearbook, please contact Heather Banuelos.  Meetings will be a couple times a month with Erin Zaleski.  Thank you to Erin Zaleski and Julie Barstow for making yearbook possible!
