Sizzling San Antonio!

The River Walk

We have returned from the TravelinWheels Texas Road Trip.  Included on the journey was our featured city, San Antonio.  We found San Antonio to be a charming city that is a little over average in terms of accessibility.  We visited some of the popular destinations, including The Alamo, and the fabulous ultra-accessible park for children with disabilities, Morgan's Wonderland

While San Antonio is our featured city, be sure to check out the information we gathered from Austin and Houston as well!  Be on the lookout for information on Dallas soon.

We want to hear from you!  As the weather starts to turn, and the season changes, we want to know about your favorite places to visit in the fall!  Please share with us and the TravelinWheels' community by answering the Question of the Month below.  Now get out there and enjoy the last days of summer!

Visiting the Alamo

Visiting Accessible San Antonio, Texas!

Well, it's over 100 degrees, and here we are in San Antonio!   Who goes to San Antonio in August?  We do, so that we can get access to a variety of places in order to find out how accessible they are!   From what we have seen, we can give San Antonio a "thumbs up"...

Travel Stories & Tips:

The Accessibility of Morgan's Wonderland

By Whitney Larkins

In 2010, Morgan's Wonderland in San Antonio opened its doors and it is known as the first-ever ultra-accessible family fun park!  The park stretches over 25-acres and it features rides that can be enjoyed by those in wheelchairs.  There are fun games, rides, playgrounds, gardens and interactive exhibits that are fun for the entire family...

 Texas Rowing for All

texasrowingforall.org

Kayaking on the sea and down the Colorado River would be awesome to maneuver and getting some of the basic kayaking moves beforehand would be a wise move.  One can find out how by visiting Texas Rowing for All (TRFA) in Austin at Lady Bird Lake.  Their mission is to empower people with disabilities by providing a positive learning experience in rowing.  As a non-profit organization, TRFA does not charge people for rowing experiences and relies on its vast number of volunteers.

The Texas Rowing Center (http://www.texasrowingcenter.com/) at Lady Bird Lake helps TRFA by providing facilities, dock space, equipment, and storage space.  In 2009 TRFA was chosen as the third, Paralympic Sports rowing club by the United States Olympic Committee/US Paralympic division.

A major aim of this organization is to make rowing adventures inclusive by having people with disabilities integrate into the able-bodied community of rowers.  Ten different programs are listed on their website, texasrowingforall.org, that include programs for "Wounded Warriors", people with intellectual disabilities, visual impairments, hearing disabilities, Special Olympics or simply anyone who wants to learn how to row.
