Welcome, New Students!
At the annual Ceremony of Lights, the kick-off event to Autumn Term, Eckerd welcomed 565 new freshmen and transfer students.
In the words of Eckerd College President Dr. Donald R. Eastman III, "You chose to come to Eckerd College from 14 countries, 42 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico because you figured out, one way or another, by Web, word of mouth, campus visit, or intuition, that the Eckerd experience is one of the most compelling educational adventures in the world today."
A Message from the President: New Staff and Promotions
In an announcement about key appointments and promotions, President Eastman congratulated those who assumed new or expanded responsibilities this summer and welcomed new staff members who have joined the Eckerd community in recent weeks.

Faculty Focus: David Hastings

This August, Professor of Marine Science and Chemistry David Hastings participated in at-sea research in the Gulf of Mexico that would help to understand the Deep Water Horizon (DWH) event and subsequent impacts on the plankton population, reef and fish communities and the microbial communities. The recipient of the 2012 Robert A. Staub Distinguished Teacher Award photo-blogged about his experience: " After the oil spill, there was a large pulse of sedimentation from the surface waters that has a different coloration from the sediments beneath. The rate of sedimentation following the oil spill is 100 times greater than before! "

Eckerd College Again Among the 40 "Colleges That Change Lives"
Eckerd's profile in the book reads, "On a sunny, lush plot of land on Florida's Gulf Coast, Eckerd College might seem like the perfect spot for an easy college career, four years marked by sun, surf, and sand. But if you're looking for a vacation, you should enroll elsewhere." Read more
A Bumper Crop of Students
Eckerd College announces its highest fall enrollment numbers in the College's 54-year history. "Eckerd College projects that it will have 1,870 full-time equivalent students during the 2012-13 academic year," said John Sullivan, Dean of Admission and Financial Aid. "This final number is 50 students over and above our overall projected goal for the Fall 2012 Term." The last time that the College experienced a similar surge was in 2009 when the fall enrollment numbers clocked in at 1,842, 41 students over goal. Eckerd's Prii

The season is ripe for "Hodgell in an Election Year," on display in Cobb Art Gallery from September 3 to October 5. This exhibition includes relief prints (linocuts), original linoleum blocks, preparatory drawings, and a painting showcasing Robert Hodgell's wonderfully insightful social and political commentary. Although these images date mostly from the 60's and 70's, they remain remarkably relevant today.
Robert Hodgell (1922-2000) was the first founding faculty member of the visual arts department at Florida Presbyterian College / Eckerd College, and taught for us from 1961-1978. He was a prolific painter, sculptor and printmaker, and the college is fortunate to own a substantial number of his works. |
