Eckerd Students Witness War Criminal's Sentencing

On May 30, 2012, ex-Liberian president Charles Taylor was sentenced on to 50 years in prison for his role in atrocities committed in Sierra Leone during its civil war in the 1990s. Eckerd students witnessed the sentencing firsthand.

Shortly after graduation, political science professor Bill Felice's and students in his international law spring-into-summer class traveled to The Hague, Netherlands, to study the European approach to human rights. On May 30, 2012, from the front row of the public viewing gallery, they witnessed history in the making as ex-Liberian president Charles Taylor was sentenced to 50 years in prison by the Special Court for Sierra Leone. Mr. Taylor was the first former head of state convicted by an international tribunal since the Nuremberg trials in Germany after World War II. He was found guilty of "aiding and abetting, as well as planning, some of the most heinous and brutal crimes recorded in human history."

Eckerd College Summer Science Splash Camp
Cherie Diaz | Tampa Bay Times

Thanks to a generous grant from the II-VI Foundation, Eckerd College hosted close to 100 Tampa Bay middle schoolers for the first-ever Summer Science Splash Camp this July. Eckerd was one of two college partners to be selected by the Foundation to host this early education initiative. Campers explored the study of light during the weeklong, residential camp.

The development of the camp curriculum was a collaborative effort of Eckerd College science faculty and certified science teachers from Pinellas County middle and high schools. Serving as camp instructors were physics professor Dr. Anne J. Cox, associate professor of chemistry Dr. R. Chris Schnabel, alumna Sommer Paquet '06 and Bay Point Middle teacher Brian Walters. Students James Gibson '14, Max Martin '14, Elena Weinburg '12 and Chloe Worri '14 served as teaching assistants.

Led by Susan Brody, director of the Eckerd College Road Scholar Program in St. Augustine, the camp counselors wereKyle Berghold '13, Jamal Dutton '14, Haviland Kebler '14, Kelly Lewis '14 and Katie Schaeffer '13.

Restoring Mangroves in Indonesia
Prof. Jeannine Lessmann and Brett Thompson '12

This summer, a pilot mangrove restoration program funded by ASIANetwork helped Eckerd students Brett Thompson '12, Kate Farley '12 and Kaitlyn Lantz '14 travel to Semarang, Indonesia, where they combined their interests in Asia, environmental studies and service. Led by marine botanist Dr. Jeannine Lessmann and service-learning director Brian MacHarg, the group collaborated with an Indonesian toxicologist and three of his students to perform service-learning with local communities and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) addressing mangrove depletion and sea level rise. Eckerd College was one of only two institutions to receive a $23,000 grant award from ASIANetwork for the pilot project.
