Greetings!
Seven Hollings Scholars. A Goldwater Scholar. A Galbraith Fellow. Numerous summer researchers. It's that time of year for Eckerd students to hear if they've received scholarships or fellowships and/or if they will be participating in a research project in just a few months. Scan this issue's 'Campus News' section for the related article and if you see any of the recipients on campus, make sure to congratulate them on their achievement(s).

Emergency Notification Siren Test:
April 26 and 27
Eckerd College puts the health and safety of its students, faculty, and staff among its highest priorities. With a recent grant from the Department of Homeland Security, the College is installing an emergency notification siren on Thursday, April 26.
On April 26, and possibly April 27, the siren will be tested midday. It will sound like a standard fire siren lasting 30-60 seconds. You will also receive a text message and an email that will clarify that the alert is only a test.
Please save 89361 as "Eckerd Alert" in your cell phone. If you do not receive the emergency text message, please check to make sure your cell phone number is correct in ECWeb. Sign in with your email username and password, click on 'Personal Information', then update your cell phone number.
In a real emergency, this siren will be sounded to alert individuals who are outdoors to seek shelter from imminent danger such as a tornado or person-at-large with a weapon. The siren will be accompanied by a text message and an email with more details.
2012-13 Presidential Events Series Will Be Service-Focused
Each year, the Office of Marketing and Communications promotes speakers and other College events as part of the Presidential Events Series. Events included in the series, which has a theme reflective of the Eckerd experience, are selected from the many planned by members of the Eckerd community. The theme for the 2012-13 academic year will be service-focused, and is inspired by the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) and the visiting scholar-in-residence, Tracy Kidder, whose books will be read by the first-year and senior students during the fall semester. The Office of Marketing and Communications will compile the list of service-focused events for the Presidential Events Series from the College Program Series proposals submitted to Associate Dean Suzan Harrison. We are proud to offer free, public events to the community, and we invite you to consider how events you're planning might support the 2012-13 Presidential Events Series theme focused on service. PEL Grad and Future Prosecutor Gets Published
Elaine Barbiarz '08, a Program for Experienced Learners (PEL) graduate and soon-to-be graduate of Stetson University College of Law, became a published author last December. Elaine is one of six students whose essay is featured in Dr. Tim Kaye's Law, Justice, and Miscommunications: Essays in Applied Legal Philosophy. Elaine's paper, "Amber Waves of (Genetically Modified) Grain: Rectifying the Injustice of GM Seed Patents," discusses the debate surrounding genetically modified food, viewed as both the solution to world hunger and as a cancer-causing biological weapon.
Elaine shared, "Had it not been for my participation in the American Studies program and the exposure to the amazing Dr. Catherine Griggs, I would have probably never gone on to law school. Now, not only am I published, but I'll be graduating with my JD in May!"
