Faculty Focus: Professors Davina Lopez and Jessica Thonen
In a previous issue, we listed the names of faculty members who had earned tenure. Two professors, who were profiled previously for the Office of Admission's 'Meet Our Community' webpage, answered the question, "What is the best thing a student has ever said in your class?"
"Eckerd students say 'best things' all the time! I would say that the best moments in our classroom work are those moments when students express a deep desire for learning and critical engagement. This happens in a variety of ways around here - when Eckerd students work together with their professors, the resultant intellectual community is amazing and, frankly, I never tire of it!"
Davina Lopez, Associate Professor of Religious Studies
"'There are no problems! Only challenges!' I spend a lot of time trying to teach my students to generate optimistic outlooks even at our darkest hours. I work hard to prevent them from bogging down when things get difficult, to instead see the joy in conquering our "challenges" in the creative process. I never want my students to feel like they have failed at any point."
Raise Awareness, $ for Cancer Research at Relay For Life
From 5 pm this Friday, March 30, to 9 am, Saturday, March 31, Eckerd College will be hosting one of the largest student-run philanthropy projects on Eckerd's campus - American Cancer Society's Relay For Life. To date, Eckerd students, faculty, staff, and alumni have raised over $10,000 for cancer research and awareness. This year's circus theme promises cotton candy, face painting, a hypnotist, tye-dye, and a 'pie your professor' station (where colleagues like Dean Jim Annarelli will get 'pied'). The Relay's opening ceremonies will include the national anthem by Eckerd student Devon Williams; the Luminaria ceremony will be held at 9 pm. Each team will have fundraisers the night of, so bring some dollars and change!
Explore Eckerd: Parking Shifts Admission will be welcoming admitted students and their families at two upcoming Explore Eckerd events. In an effort to be as inviting as possible to our visitors, the Cobb lot, Upham grass lot, and the Upham East lot will be reserved parking for those guests. All faculty and staff should park in the North lot, near McArthur Gymnasium or the West lot, across from Lewis House on Mondays, April 2 and 15. Thank you for your cooperation!
