New ASPEC Director Named
Ken Wolfe has been appointed director of the Academy of Senior Professionals at Eckerd College (ASPEC). After a distinguished business career in England and the U.S., Ken, together with Annemarie, joined ASPEC in 2008. For 13 semesters, Ken has served as a discussant colleague and guest lecturer in general education and business courses. He has also served as a mentor for students on the Mustard Seed project and several other community-based service learning projects. Ken has been a member of Eckerd College's National Advisory Board since 2011.
Ethics Bowl Team Coaches Retire
ASPEC members Naomi and Leonard Block are stepping down from their 12-year post as winning coaches of the Eckerd College Ethics Bowl Team. The Blocks, who have helped lead Eckerd's Ethics Bowl Team to seven regional wins, will be succeeded by Dr. Steve Weppner, Professor of Physics. Although the team returned from the national competition in Cincinnati this March without a trophy in-hand, the students and coaches are to be congratulated for their efforts and for representing Eckerd on the national stage. We thank the Blocks for their dedication and commitment to the students and wish them well in their future endeavors!
"Leonard and I are retiring after 12 years that were exciting and productive. We are delighted that the Ethics Bowl will continue under Dr. Weppner's excellent leadership. We want to thank Professor Julienne H. Empric for her service as faculty sponsor, Professor Zach Dobbins for helping Dr. Empric this year, Dean James Annarelli for whom we are grateful for the Eckerd Ethics Bowl's existence, Robert Shepherd for serving the teams since their inception, and Kirk Eason, an Eckerd graduate and former ethics bowler, for his assistance coaching the teams.
College support for the Ethics Bowl has grown over the past years and is very much on its top list of priorities thanks to Dean of Faculty Betty Stewart. As for Dean Emeritus Lloyd Chapin, the Ethics Bowl at Eckerd College would never have had the long life it has had. Dean Chapin supported the teams from the very start and is still available when we need his services. We will miss it, especially the students; it has been a most wonderful time in our lives to train the different teams."
- Naomi Block
