Anaerobic energy system powers feedlot
A Canadian feedlot is using manure to create renewable energy with a combined heat and power (CHP) system installed by Elite Energy Systems.  Biogas is derived from a mix of manure and organic material as it undergoes an anaerobic digestion process.  The biogas is converted to electricity which powers the entire Gardiner Farms Operation.

Representing agricultural producers from their states, agriculture department directors from Iowa, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming met with EPA officials recently to discuss EPA programs and regulations as well as several timely issues including air quality, particulate matter and renewable fuels. "American farmers and ranchers have such broad impacts on everything from daily food prices to widespread environmental impacts to emerging renewable fuel technologies that EPA needs to hear the views of state agriculture directors as part of our decision making process," said EPA Region 7 Administrator Karl Brooks.

Value the Vaccination

This is one procedure you don't want to mess up

- By Loretta Sorenson
There are a lot of tasks to do at a branding, and vaccinations are pretty close to the top of the list. They need to be done right, and the product needs to be protected from the things that can cause them to be ineffective.Photo by Malloree Barnes

Injecting vaccine into a calf doesn't necessarily mean the animal receives maximum protection from disease. At numerous points between when the vaccine leaves the supplier and when it enters the animal, quality and effectiveness of the shot can be reduced if it's not handled carefully. Terry Todd, licensed veterinarian and Cohagen, MT, rancher says compromised vaccine can't stimulate the necessary level of antigens in an animal.
