5 ways in 5 days: Things you can do to put the "I" in Health IT

I in Health IT

National Health IT Week (September 12 - 16) provides an opportunity to bring attention to the important role of health information technology in improving the quality, safety, and value of healthcare delivery. The RI Regional Extension Center offers the following suggestions (five ways in five days) for things you can do in your practice:

  • Monday, Sept. 12 - If you're not already a member of  RI REC, join now, and learn if you're eligible to enroll in our EHR Adoption Program. If you're already enrolled, add to your HIT knowledge by participating in our Health IT Certification Program. Ask your Relationship Manager about how you and your staff may be eligible for this free training.

  • Tuesday, Sept. 13 - Encourage your patients to sign up for currentcare, Rhode Island's statewide Health Information Exchange (HIE). currentcare allows clinicians immediate access to a patient's longitudinal health records from multiple locations, as well as valuable care coordination features, such as real-time electronic notification of emergency department and hospital admissions, and quality measurement and reporting capabilities. For more information, call 1-888-858-4815 and choose "3."

  • Wednesday, Sept. 14 - Learn about our Direct Adoption Program, which helps practices implement Direct Messaging. This secure, simple, cost-effective form of e-mail allows you to exchange your patients' health information directly with known, trusted recipients using the Internet. RI REC is the only one of the 62 RECs nationwide with a program to help providers adopt Direct Messaging and a Vendor Marketplace for selecting a necessary Health Information Service Provider (HISP).

  • Thursday, Sept. 15 Join us from 6 to 8 pm for a cocktail reception to recognize RI REC providers who have achieved Stage 1 Meaningful Use of their EHR. Listen to comments by Laura Adams, President and CEO of the Rhode Island Quality Institute, and Joshua Seidman, PhD, Director, Meaningful Use, HHS Office of the National Coordinator. Please RSVP; for more information, please write to Elise Hamann or call 401-276-9141, ext 232.

If you can't attend the reception, be sure to visit www.DocEHRtalk.org to learn how you might benefit from the Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Program and RI REC's subsidies for eligible providers.

  • Friday, Sept. 16 Take time to acknowledge everyone at your practice for their contributions to using health information technology to enhance patient care. Let them know about our downloadable educational material, as well as the new www.HealthIT.gov. To keep informed about our upcoming provider and staff education series and next Health IT Expo, be sure to follow us on Twitter and become a Facebook friend of the Rhode Island Quality Institute.
