Dear Friends,

It is always my goal during the summer to "work on" my spiritual life. I am often tired after a demanding program year, and I usually have lessened administrative demands during this summer season. I try to fill that time with reading that expands both my personal faith and my effectiveness as a pastor. The different rhythms of the summer months open up possibilities for spiritual growth that differ from other seasons of the year. As I tell you about two of the books I will read, perhaps it will spur some ideas for you, and you can also hold me accountable!

I am really looking forward to tackling Andrew Murray's With Christ in the School of Prayer. This classic book, written a hundred years ago, examines the practice of prayer as taught and modeled by Jesus. Murray starts by reminding us that one of the few direct requests the disciples made of Jesus was "Lord, teach us to pray" (Luke 11:1). This is an area I always feel I can grow in, so I look forward to this book.

I will also read a book by David Wells with a very provocative title: The Courage to be Protestant. Wells begins the book by stating, "It takes no courage to sign up to be a Protestant. After all, millions have done so throughout the west. They are not in any peril. To live by the truths of historic Protestantism, however, is an entirely different matter. That takes courage in today's context." This introduction really caught my interest!

I also have a leadership book and a preaching book I will tackle, and hopefully some light fiction.

No matter where you may go this summer, I hope you'll keep
growing in your relationship with Christ. I also hope you'll stay connected to 2PC whether you are in town or not. Keep up on things through the ePulse and website, and pray for us all through the
summer.

I also hope that you'll continue to remember the church in your
financial giving this summer. We are still a bit behind on our 2012 giving. Summer can be tight financially and we appreciate your continued support. Thanks, and have a great summer!

Alleluia!
