Dear Friends,
With Memorial Day weekend upon us, it feels like summer has arrived. The 85-degree weather probably also has something to do with it! It feels like a new time in the year. And with the school year ending, it really is.
I was so moved on Sunday by the many graduates we recognized: from high schools, colleges and our Culinary Arts Training Academy. It was a joy to celebrate with all of them! Graduations are significant because they recognize persons having successfully completed something significant. They have worked hard, learned much and passed requirements. Graduations are also significant because, with one challenge completed, something new is on the horizon.
Douglas Cranston's message tied very well into the activities of the day, as he reminded us that Christ's sacrifice accomplished fully and exactly what God had always intended; and that in Christ our sins are forgiven. That is also cause for celebration. It also signifies something new, that we walk from now into the future as forgiven people; something completed, and something new coming.
One of my seminary professors was known for his writing on the Kingdom of God, and Dr. Ladd's theme about the kingdom was that Christ's Kingdom is "... already but not yet...." Christ has ushered into our world the Kingdom of God; it is here already. But it is not yet fully revealed, and will not be fully revealed until God wraps up history and welcomes us home. Our lives are built on the sure foundation of Jesus Christ, but the next days are filled with persons, activities and events that we don't yet know about.
I think one of the challenges of the Christian life is living in the tension of the "already but not yet." In Christ we are fully redeemed and fully set free to live joyous, victorious lives. And yet, there is more to come: a new season to live into, a fresh chapter to be revealed, a greater depth of God's love to experience and a greater servanthood to live.
I am thankful for this reminder that Christ is working right now in our lives, and also that he who began a good work in us will be faithful to complete it. (Philippians 1:6) Thanks be to God!
Alleluia!
