RAA wants to ensure our members are prepared to maneuver through the impending regulatory changes while minimizing negative impacts to your operations.

Scott Foose, RAA Senior VP-Operations & Safety will take the opportunity to update Congress on the investments and tremendous progress RAA members have made in voluntary safety programs, training and other initiatives during a House Subcomittee hearing scheduled for Wednesday, April 25.
In addition, Foose will participate in Ford & Harrison’s 2012 Airline Labor & Employment Law Symposium, May 3 and 4 in Atlanta themed “Setting the Course—Navigating Challenging Times”. During a panel discussion, Foose will address regulatory changes affecting the airline industry and provide practical advise on how to implement the new Flight & Duty Regulations. CAE Co-locates Training and Manufacturing at Montreal facility

CAE and its customers recently celebrated the revamping of the commercial aviation training center, which is co-located with the company’s engineering development and manufacturing headquarters in Montreal, Canada. Airline customers and CAE employees pose in front of the new CAE 5000 Series full-flight simulator for the Bombardier Q400 aircraft at the Montreal facility.

Bombardier and Fokker Services Increase Dash 8 Spare Parts Availability

Bombardier has strengthened its strategic alliance with Fokker Services to increase the availability and reduce the cost of spare parts for operators of its out-of-production Dash 8/Q-Series 100/200/300 aircraft. Fokker Services has secured more than 2,600 part numbers to distribute to operators worldwide.

Pinnacle Airlines Files for Bankruptcy in US

Pinnacle Airlines Corp., parent of Pinnacle Airlines and Colgan Air, has filed for bankruptcy protection. Pinnacle operates as various regional airlines, most notably Delta Connection, for bigger-name partners including Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and US Airways. Pinnacle said it would rework contracts with Delta and end flying for United and US Airways. The company also wants to cut its labor and operating costs. "Our current business model is not sustainable, as increasing operating expenses, liquidity constraints, business integration delays and difficulties associated with combining our operations have hindered our ability to maximize our growth potential," said Sean Menke, Pinnacle's president and chief executive.

American Airlines Teams With Fellow Oneworld Members British Airways and Iberia for Fare Sale to Europe

American Airlines and two of its fellow oneworld alliance members, British Airways and Iberia, are offering special discounted fares between the United States and Europe. Travel must originate in the United States. A portion of, or all travel for some itineraries, may be operated by American Airlines, British Airways, Iberia, American Eagle or AmericanConnection carrier Chautauqua Airlines.

US Airways Express (PSA) Flight Attendants Ratify Contract Between PSA Airlines and the Association of Flight Attendants

Flight attendants at US Airways' wholly-owned subsidiary PSA Airlines, represented by the Association of Flight Attendants (AFA) Council 75, voted to ratify the new five-year collective bargaining contract previously announced on Feb. 23. The contract was ratified by PSA's 268 AFA-represented flight attendants based in Dayton, Ohio, Knoxville, TN, and Charlotte, NC. "We are very pleased that our flight attendants have ratified the new collective bargaining agreement and are looking forward to our continued partnership with the AFA and the professional flight attendant team they represent," said PSA Airlines President and CEO Keith Houk.

Frontier Airlines Expands Madison-Washington, D.C. Service
MarketWatch (03/26/12)

Frontier Airlines has announced an expansion to its service between Madison, WI, and Washington, DC Reagan. The airline will begin daily flights between the two locations on June 7, 2012. Flights will operate on 99-seat Embraer 190 aircraft. “Frontier already offers low fares on the only nonstop service between Madison and the DC area via convenient Washington Reagan Airport,” said David Siegel, president and CEO of Frontier. “Our new daily service and improved schedule will make it even easier for value-conscious leisure and business travelers to visit our nation’s capital.”

US Airways Begins Service to 14 Communities From Washington, DC's Reagan National Airport

US Airways commenced on March 25 new service to 11 communities and enhanced service to three from Washington, DC's Reagan National Airport. The airline also announced on March 21 that it would begin service to six more communities from Reagan National, and once these flights start in June and July, US Airways will have a total of 22 new routes served from DC's downtown airport.

D/FW Travelers Have a New Way to Get to New York
Dallas Morning News (TX) (03/23/12) Maxon, Terry

On March 25, Delta Air Lines commenced six daily flights between Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and New York LaGuardia as part of its LaGuardia expansion. "An important part of our strategy to become the preferred airline in New York is connecting to key business markets, and that includes daily jet service between the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex and LaGuardia," said Delta executive Gail Grimmett. Delta will employ Shuttle America, flying as the Delta Connection, to operate the Delta Flights. Shuttle America is a carrier run by Republic Airways, and the flights will use 70-seat Embraer ERJ-170 aircraft.

Great Lakes Aviation to Take Over April 11 at Mason City Airport

On April 11, Great Lakes Aviation will replace Delta Airlines as service provider at Mason City Municipal Airport in Iowa. Great Lakes' proposed schedule is four round-trips flights to Minneapolis on Monday through Friday, and three round-trips flights each on Saturday and Sunday. A 19-seat Beechcraft 1900D turboprop will fly the route.

Nonstop Flights From Birmingham to DC's Reagan National Begin
Birmingham News (AL) (03/21/12) Diel, Stan

On March 25, US Airways started daily nonstop flights from Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport to Reagan National Airport in Washington, DC. The flights were announced back in January, and include three daily departures and three daily return flights. "We're very excited about adding flights to Reagan National," said Birmingham Airport Authority CEO Al Denson. The service will be operated on 50-seat Canadair Regional Jet aircraft by US Air subsidiary PSA Airlines and partner Air Wisconsin.

American Eagle Wants to Cut $75M in Labor Costs

American Eagle Airlines wants to reduce its yearly labor costs by $75 million in order to better compete for work from other airlines.. American Airlines wants to transfer more of its flying to lower-cost regional airlines while also spreading the flights among several carriers. Eagle CEO Dan Garton said if Eagle fails to cut costs, American would be prompted to hire other regional airlines.

Silver Airways Expands Montana Route Network with New Service to Helena
MarketWatch (03/21/12)

Silver Airways is adding new service in Montana with weekday flights to Helena from Billings. The new flights expands Silver Airways' service to nine cities in Montana and is the carrier's first route in Montana to operate outside of the company's Essential Air Service (EAS) contract with the US Department of Transportation. The twice-daily flights will run Monday through Friday between Billings and Helena starting on May 1st. Silver Airways CEO Darrell Richardson says the new service provides optimal connections through Billings, and that the new flights outside the EAS contact demonstrates the company's strength and commitment to expand operations in Montana.

Inflight Wi-Fi Takes Off on More US Airways Flights

US Airways is expanding its Gogo Wi-Fi inflight Internet service. The expansion will include US Airways Express Embraer 170 and 175 aircraft operated by Republic Airlines. In addition to extending inflight Wi-Fi on more flights, the airline announced that it will launch Gogo Vision, a streaming video product that will allow passengers to watch movies and television shows on their own Wi-Fi enabled device.

Delta Makes In-flight Shopping Easier

Delta Air Lines fliers who connect to in-flight Wi-Fi service now have free access to Amazon.com and Amazonwireless.com. The complimentary access to the shopping portals is available on more than 800 Delta aircraft, including most Delta Connection flights that offer in-flight Wi-Fi. To connect to Amazon during flight, customers need to open their Internet browser and access the Delta Connect Wi-Fi portal, then click on the Amazon banners to start shopping.

Airline Proposal Would Keep Dulles Hub

Silver Airways of Fort Lauderdale, FL, filed with the US Department of Transportation to propose providing passenger service at the Altoona and Johnstown airports in Pennsylvania with 18 flights a week to Washington-Dulles International Airport, using 34-seat aircraft. If selected, Silver Airways will replace Colgan Air, whose owner, Pinnacle Airlines, wants to end passenger service to the Altoona-Blair County and the John P. Murtha Johnstown-Cambria County airports.

Bombardier Pitches Aircraft for WestJet Regional Airline

The Q400 NextGen Airliner built by Bombardier Aerospace was recently showcased in Calgary, Canada, to WestJet officials. The aircraft are being publicized by Bombardier in response to recent requests for proposals by WestJet for up to 40 turboprops for its new low-cost regional airline. The ATR 72-600 was also showcased at the event.
