Associate Member Council (AMC) Update

GE's Andre Robert serves as AMC Chair
RAA AMC readies for 2012 key events

The RAA AMC is looking forward to a busy and productive 2012.  As Chair of the AMC, it is my pleasure to announce the nomination of several new members to the committee.  We voted to increase the airframer membership this year and John Buckley, Vice President-Business Development, SuperJet International, joined the committee last December.  We also expect a representative from Mitsubishi Aircraft to join us shortly.  On the components side, we welcome two new members, Brad Darpel, Director-Business Development, Precision Electronics, and Mike Kenealy, Director-Business Development, STS Aviation Group. Finally, I wish to thank Rick Townsend, Senior Vice President-Sales and Marketing, Ascent Aviation, for stepping up as Vice Chair of the AMC for 2012.

With the May Annual Convention fast approaching, the AMC is already planning for key events such as the Scholarship program, Golf Tournament, Silent Auction and Purchasing Forum.  New for this year is the nomination of primary and secondary delegates to ensure continuity in the future as our membership is renewed.

Another key initiative this year is closer collaboration with the RAA on priority issues such as labor, Next Gen, FAA certification and the environment.  Several AMC members have volunteered to support this effort and will be meeting shortly with the RAA to map out the plan for 2012.

Warmest regards on behalf of the entire AMC.

André Robert, Chair

On the Hill
President Obama's Budget includes $100 Segment Tax
On Monday, President Obama released his budget request for FY2013. RAA participated in a conference call with DOT and FAA leaders, who detailed their respective budgets. As expected, the President once again proposed levying a $100 segment tax on every flight, with part of the resulting revenues to be used to reduce the deficit. The White House also proposed tripling the aviation security tax to $7.50 over the next five years, with all of the proceeds to be used to reduce the deficit.

When this same proposal was offered last year, RAA worked alongside other aviation stakeholders to oppose it, and lawmakers declined to codify the proposal. While we agree reducing the deficit is important, the segment charge would be especially devastating to small communities; many would lose all air service as a consequence.

RAA will once again work to oppose the measure on Capitol Hill.

RAA's commitment to the next generation of pilots
College and Universities- We want you!
Recognizing the future generation of regional airline professionals is essential to all members, RAA is offering FREE attendance, membership and exhibitor privileges during this year's Annual Convention to all universities and colleges with an aviation-related program.  Professors, program directors, as well as students, are encouraged to walk the Exhibit Hall floor, participate in general sessions, and learn more about this segment of the industry that operates over 50% of the nation's commercial schedule.

Details about the RAA scholarship program will be available shortly on the RAA website!  If you would like to be added to the distribution list for the scholarship requirements, deadlines and announcements, please send your name, college/university, and email address to

Did you catch Cape Air on the 5th week/episode of TV series The Bachelor?  RAA Member Airline Cape Air made it to network airwaves with the airing of ABC's The Bachelor. The cast members were taken on a journey from San Juan to Vieques (courtesy of Cape Air), to hopefully find love and experience some MOCHA HAGoTDI (Cape Air's mantra:  Make our Customer Happy and Have a Good Time Doing It).
