Aviation Industry Coalition Sends Unified Message to Congress
A united aviation industry coalition of nearly 30 organizations is opposing proposed tax increases, which would lead to significant job loss across all sectors of the industry and the nation. As part of its debt-reduction plan, the White House is proposing - and the Congressional Super Committee is now considering - two new initiatives on airlines and their passengers and general aviation. The first would add a new $100 departure tax - disguised as a fee - to all flights, and the second would double the existing passenger security tax to $5 per one-way trip in 2012, and triple the tax to $7.50 by 2017. The coalition of airlines, general aviation, manufacturers, consumer organizations and labor groups is sending a unified message to Congress to reject the proposed taxes. Read more.
Article: RAA in the News: Airlines Balk at Tax Proposal - Wall Street Journal
Airlines are expressing alarm over an Obama administration proposal to help cut the federal deficit by imposing a new tax on aviation and raising another. Carriers, airline labor unions, private pilots, corporate-jet builders and a host of other groups are lobbying hard to make the case to Congress that their barely profitable industry is being unfairly singled out. "The airline industry is an easy target," said Richard Anderson, chief executive of Delta Air Lines Inc. "Perhaps there's a sense in Washington that wealthy people fly. But over the past 20 to 30 years, flying in the U.S. has been a very middle-class activity." The administration says fees assessed on travelers cover less than half the costs of beefed-up security at airports. Officials also say that small private jets need to shoulder more of the burden of the air-traffic-control system. Read more.
RAA, Aviation Community Support House Measure Blocking EU Emissions Trading Scheme
Download the press release.
RAA joined 11 trade and industry associations today to support HR 2594. We write to urge you to support HR 2594, "The European Emissions Trading Scheme Prohibition Act of 2011." This legislation prohibits U.S. aviation operators from complying with the application of the European Union's emissions trading scheme to international aviation because the scheme violates U.S. sovereignty, international law and the Chicago Convention. The EU ETS is opposed by the Obama Administration, aviation trade associations, airlines and other operators, travel service providers, manufacturers, labor unions, a bipartisan coalition in both bodies of Congress, and numerous foreign governments. With more than 13,000 regional airline flights every day, regional airlines operate over 50 percent of the nation's commercial schedule. Some 160 million passengers annually -- more than one of every five domestic airline passengers -- travel on regionals, and the more than 2,700 regional aircraft comprise about nearly 40 percent of the US commercial passenger fleet. Most notably, regional airlines serve 631 communities across the country and in 492 of those communities -- 75 percent of the US - - regional airlines provide the only scheduled service.
Founded in 1975, Washington, DC-based RAA also provides a wide array of technical, government relations and public relations services for regional airlines.
