SHIRLEY CHRISTIAN ELECTED PRESIDENT

OF MAHONING COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION

 

Shirley ChristianSHIRLEY J. CHRISTIAN was elected last month as president of the Mahoning County Bar Association, a 500-member organization of area lawyers. She is the second woman elected to the position. Christian has been a bar association trustee and member of its grievance committee. "Shirley's work on the local and state levels reflects a decades-long pattern of heavy community involvement by HHM lawyers," said ALAN D. WENGER, chair of HHM's management committee. "Her election to lead the county bar reflects the way she's recognized as a service-oriented leader." Read more here.

HHM OIL & GAS SEMINAR INFORMS
TRUMBULL COUNTY LANDOWNERS
 


More than 500
landowners attended the two sessions of HHM's oil & gas seminar last month at the Magnuson Hotel (formerly the Avalon Inn) in Howland. Oil & gas lawyers ALAN D. WENGER, KEVIN P. MURPHY, THOMAS G. CAREY, GEORGE P. MILLICH JR. and STEPHEN P. KOCON discussed legal issues important to mineral lessors, answered questions and distributed literature. In the picture, Kocon is speaking to the evening session crowd about title defects. The seminar drew news coverage in the Tribune Chronicle, Vindicator and Business Journal.

LITIGATION ATTORNEY GRAFF JOINS HHM 

 

HHM recently welcomed MEGAN M. GRAFF to its Youngstown office. Graff has practiced law for four years in Mahoning County, concentrating on insurance defense, medical malpractice defense, commercial litigation and appellate advocacy. Graff's practice with HHM will focus on litigation and family law. She graduated from Youngstown State University with a bachelor of arts and received her juris doctorate from the University of Akron School of Law.  You can read more in this news release.

HHM ADDS OIL & GAS LAWYER STRICKLAND

 

GINA L. STRICKLAND joined HHM recently in the firm's Youngstown office. Strickland had been with Kenyon Energy LLC, an affiliate of Chesapeake Energy, where she focused on real estate law in Ohio and West Virginia. Strickland's practice at HHM will initially be concentrated on real estate matters for oil and gas clients. She graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of science degree from Youngstown State University and received her juris doctorate magna cum laude from Cooley Law School in Lansing, Mich. Read more here.

MILLICH PRESENTS AT SEMINARS

 

GEORGE P. MILLICH JR. recently spoke at two Ohio seminars on trusts and related matters. He presented as part of a seminar Merrill Lynch sponsored in Augusta. He also spoke as part of a National Business Institute trusts seminar in Boardman. Millich is part of HHM's Oil & Gas Law Practice Group.

TITLE DEFECTS CAN SPOIL A LEASE,
BUT QUICK ACTION CAN CURE THEM

Title defects, often unknown to a landowner, can surface during an oil & gas lessee's title examination. We have found that title examinations typically reveal that 10-15% of landowners have a title problem. Depending on the circumstances, many of these defects can be cured and the lease, therefore, saved. Quick action is usually required. Read the full post here.

Making the most of those opportunities requires caution with respect to the contracts that govern business relationships with the large oil & gas companies and their primary suppliers. NEW EEOC GUIDELINES MAY MEAN
NEW APPROACHES BY EMPLOYERS

New guidelines issued by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission affect how employers can use criminal background checks. The EEOC is not prohibiting such checks, but seeking to make sure information is not used in a discriminatory way. Employers may want to consider new approaches. Read more here.

 HHM LAWYERS IN THE COMMUNITY

DavidvgoliathALAN D. WENGER recently published an article in Ohio Lawyer warning lawyers who represent landowners to avoid lease pitfalls that could bring "disastrous consequences." Ohio Lawyer is published by the Ohio State Bar Association for its 31,000 members. In his article, Wenger warns that Ohio's shale boom means new challenges to landowners' lawyers, including "confusing contracts" advanced by energy companies. "We should do better than this for our lessor clients," Wenger writes. More information, including a copy of the article, is available here.

WKBN Swanston FundPAUL M. DUTTON, who is chairman of the William Swanston Charitable Fund, recently led a news conference at which the fund announced a $600,000 grant for Campbell Works for Children, a multi-faceted program for at-risk children. The grant is the largest in the Swanston Fund's history. Dutton has been a trustee of the fund for 30 years. The grant announcement enjoyed high-profile news coverage, including this story on WKBN-TV Channel 27.

McGeeMICHAEL J. McGEE and other members of the Warren Trumbull County Public Library's board of trustees cut a ribbon in June to mark the opening of the new Cortland library, which more than doubled in size and added many new, modern features.
 

HHM is a co-sponsor of Beaver Township's Music in the Park, an 11-week summer concert series that brings performers to the Woodworth Park gazebo on Wednesday nights.
 

HHM was among the sponsors of the Suzi Solomon Golf Classic at Avalon at Squaw Creek in June to raise funds for the Jewish Community Center. The firm also co-sponsored the Children's Circle of Friends Sports Celebrity Golf Classic at the Lake Club in July, a fund-raiser for the D&E Counseling Center.
