In the last survey of 2011, we asked our readers - What is fair compensation for sales people? Base with % of sales, or what?
Comments were not very numerous due in part almost certainly to the holiday season and the complexity of the question.
- 100% commission of margin on monthly net orders (excludes delivery, surcharges and GST) irrespective if client pays or not plus expenses, such as mobile, car, travel, accomodation etc, but the expenses are capped to a monthly budget. This ensures motivation to hit the road and phones, and closure of sales but also helps to make sales person doesn't go overboard on wining and dining since expenses are capped. If the client is a slow payer or does not pay, the sales person should not be punished for this, as its the responsibility of accounts payable clerk. Sales person has done their job in getting the sale. Likewise if product is returned under a warranty claim, sales person should still get paid and it is not their fault if the purchasing department is buying crap material from china or production department produced poor quality work.
- 7% of gross sales has been working well for sometime now.
- The real question is not what is a suitable remuneration package but more to the point, "where do we find GOOD sales people".....I am sick and tired of listening to and paying huge packages to SO CALLED GREAT SALES EXECS only to find how full of **** they are. Any way back to your question. We have tried several options and still have not been able to get sales execs to excell. 1. base salary of $50,000.00 (or higher) + Vehicle + Phone + Petrol Account + Sales Target Bonus incentives. 2. Commission only with lucrative Ascending % commisions structure. 3. Set Salary Package with NO commissions.......If anyone knows the answers I am all ears.....
- This is a really vexed question. Some sales people are not even worth a base rate let alone a percentage. Other sales people are worth their weight in gold. In my previous incarnation I ran a business with 12 sales people based across the 3 eastern capitals and the difference in performance was astounding. At our monthly sales meetings I would hear all the usual excuses as to why individual sales targets were or could not be met and on one occasion a sales person claimed they would perform better if we catered the sales meetings better. Suffice to say he was moved on pretty sharply after that. A good sales person will usually negotiate their salary package with a moderate base salary and a good % of their sales and will them exceed targets (everyone wins). The ordinary sales person will usually opt for a bigger base and no % as they know they will not hit targets. In my experience, the better the technical knowledge of the product you are selling the better your conversion rate will be.
- Sales people should be paid on a sliding scale. 0% of all current customers, with the potential of a small percentage of increased business from the customers that can be DIRECTLY ATTRIBUTED to the sales persons efforts. A high percentage of all new customer sales, with this percentage reduced over time. This encourages sales staff to source new clients and not rely on "exsisting" customer base.
- Ideally it should be a zero base salary and an entirely commission based renumeration - the actual commission should be based on a base target and then on a sliding scale. I understand that in order to attract good sales people, a base salary is expected plus all the normal benefits. It's a complex question but if both parties agree that both parties must score, then it should not be too difficult to arrive at an equitable agreement.
