In the last week's survey, we asked our readers - Do you price your work using one of the industry pricing guides? If so, do you generally win business by using these prices?No 82% Yes 18% - The price guides would be ok if everyone stuck closely to them We use it as a guide and buy one every second year but have found that if we stay close to the price a lot of the time we lose the job.
- I hope someone out there is using the pricing guide because they may be giving themselves the best chance of surviving by actually getting paid for what the job is worth. As a supplier I am seeing so many customers going down this price cutting path to out compete each other and I just can't see how they are making any money out of these jobs! I am always concerned about this as our survival depends on their survival.
- Rarely do I use the pricing guide, as it really doesn't allow for costs of freight and other factors that alter a price on signage. I sometimes, emphasize sometimes use it as a "rough" guide to a quote, but I always double check my figures to make sure that my costs are covered, and I'm making a reasonable profit.
- Yes I have/do use The Pricing Guide it will win some business. Yes i have (one of the 'lucky' how ever many thousand people to get that freebie) but DONT use the Signie, Sure it will win business BUT after two weeks I'd struggle to draw wages let alone be able to turn the lights on in the place! Think some one forgot to account for overheads in those numbers... Oop!
- Personally, I know my opposition use the price gides as a maximum price, and always go below it. I think using a price guide as the basis for a quote is very dangerous. I've choked to see some of the prices listed there. In my wildest dreams I couldn't come close to realising the prices suggest in some of the markets here. Seriously, you have to know your cost base before you can quote. A better investment would be to buy an estimating program that tells you what you need to make a decent living, rather than rely on a 'one size fits all' pricing book. Its a good idea to have an cost comparison, but to use it as a price bible is plain dangerous.
- Brian Good survey! I feel the key is multi part. 1. So, working as a consultant in the industry i see prices as low as $55 per hour, and I submit that is next to cost most are only $70 odd dollars per hour and again that will yield VERY low profits. 2. Rarely do i see companies charging prices that as a rule were common 10 years ago, so prices are dropping. 3. Knowing that pricing guides are a quality reference guide general authored by several knowledgable experts if used as a cross check or guideline I would suggest they do form a vital tool for a sign or print company to at least get a second opinion. 4. Furthermore - accepted wisdom is everyone knows that one price in one business area in say an outlying suburb or regional centre will almost every time be lower in price that an inner city suburb - costs or rents etc dictate that alone. Lastly: I know clients who just use the guide and thats it. Its no surprise to me they win business and respect from clients AND they literally win every job, in many cases the dynamic improvements to their business, family and the quality of work they provide the clients improves - creating a WIN < WIN > WIN. - hard to beat that, considering the great leap forward they have created for themselves and the business of signs and print - PROFIT is a very good thing.
- You have to be kidding, you would never get me to actually pay for one but I do get them offered for free The prices are just ridiculous, we would be out of business in no time if we were guided by those prices. Best to have a proper estimating system.
- The pricing guide is an excellent tool to use in the industry as you now can justify to your clients where the associated costs really are.
- Always found the price points were too high to win the work.
- We don't rely on the industry pricing guide. We use KIM and generally price using labour time required, materials needed (including a 60% markup) and a variable profit % depending on client and their circumstances. We have on several instances checked our prices against the pricing guide and have found that in most times are similar in price or on occassion higher and sometimes slightly lower. Unfortunately though there are too many people buying into this unregulated industry with little to no industry experience or knowledge of what prices can be obtained or their product is worth and are unfortunately undervaluing themselves and the products they sell by giving the product away...Just to ensure they have work. These people should all have a pricing guide to understand what they can achieve...............
- No, we individually price jobs using our own pricing matrix. We usually win most jobs we quote for and for those we miss out on it generally is because the client want work done at unrealistic prices or want the work done immediately.
- Great selling tool. We keep it on the front counter and customers see you referring to it. If the price is from the book then its believable to the customer we are not just making it up as we go. Wish our competitors used it.
- Yes but it is a 2009 version as we cannot hold big city prices here. Have had a few suppliers for substrates etc say they are aware of the guide but cannot use it for the same issues.
- Yes but the Signie price guide rubbish
