RPS community,
We are all saddened by the shootings that have taken place in the Aurora, Colorado
movie theater. Feelings of panic and fear - among others - exist, and extensive news media coverage can sometimes heighten those feelings, especially in children. All communities struggle in the aftermath of these tragedies, and it is especially important to help calm children's fears.
Your child may have unresolved feelings that he or she would like to discuss. Parents typically have the skills necessary to help their children deal with these feelings, but if you need additional support here are some suggestions. As always, you can help by listening carefully, not overreacting, accepting your child's feelings and answering questions according to your family's values and beliefs. And remember, "I don't know" is an appropriate
answer, too.
We have attached some information (click here) that may also be useful to you in helping your child at home. If you would like additional information or need assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me or Scott Gill, our Director of Counseling.
With best wishes,
