From the Headmaster

The Summer Break provides many of us on campus with the opportunity to catch up on reading, and one of the books I had a chance to sample this summer suggested that the first thing one needs to learn when first attempting to ride a horse is how to fall. The moral I received is that new opportunities often are framed in a bit of risk, and since life usually does not offer guarantees, one prudent method of moving forward with these opportunities is to accept the fact that sometimes there will be disappointments and set-backs. Clearly one benefits by attempting to move forward and to embrace new opportunities and to take risks, but one must be prepared for disappointment along the way.   Success and accomplishment frequently are the result of taking risks and learning how to maneuver past the obstacles along the way.

Throughout this issue you will find examples of alumni and future alumni taking chances and their subsequent accomplishments.  Click Here to read

Dr. Michael Gottlieb '65

Dr. Michael Gottlieb '65 is board-certified in internal medicine and clinical immunology/ allergy. He has a teaching faculty appointment as an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He also has a long history of involvement with HIV/AIDS dating from 1981 when, with colleagues, he authored the first report to the CDC identifying AIDS as a new disease.

June 5th, 2011, marked the 30th anniversary of the publication of Dr. Gottlieb's report on five patients who had what would become known as AIDS. Several articles and media segments look back at that time and reflect on the state of the HIV/AIDS epidemic today. We have included a link to one of those articles.

Middle School Students Exhibited in Hutch Magazine

We are so proud of the Middle School students whose work was accepted for publication in the most recent issue of Hutch magazine. Every year, a number of our students' work is published in a variety of children's magazines as part of the Fifth Grade Submissions Project. By submitting book reviews, poems and stories to established publications, our students learn that their voice is not only recognized by their teacher but has the potential to reach larger audiences. Please Click Here to see examples of the work that has been published.
