Lockout set to take effect for Minn. Orchestra
by Euan Kerr, Minnesota Public Radio
September 30, 2012

After Minnesota Orchestra management rejected a last-minute request for binding arbitration, it appears that the organization is headed for a lockout at midnight Sunday.

After a 90-minute meeting in which management rejected the arbitration request and another request to continue negotiating with the terms of the current contract in place, musicians emerged to say that no deal had been reached.

Orchestra  management had set the midnight deadline for a deal to prevent a lockout.

Atlanta Symphony musicians strike deal, avert delay of season opener
By Ernie Suggs
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
9/26/12

After going without pay for a month, the musicians of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra accepted a new collective bargaining agreement Wednesday, barely averting a postponement of the fall season. The deal will cost players $5.2 million in compensation over two years, change their pay structure, and cut their numbers significantly.
In return, ASO President Stanley Romanstein and a handful of other top ASO executives will forfeit 6 percent of their collective salaries.

Late Boulder Daily Camera critic to be honored
By Kelly Dean Hansen Camera Classical Music Writer

Wes Blomster
Wes Blomster will be honored at a concert featuring the music he cherished. (Daily Camera)

When classical music critic Wes Blomster died on Oct. 1, 2011, the city of Boulder and the Daily Camera lost a great champion of that which is most beautiful and excellent in the human spirit.

Blomster, 82, had been in deteriorating health for some time, and his death came after a brief stay in hospice care. Despite the fact so many in Boulder knew and loved him, the Camera critic was an intensely private person, and few really knew the most fascinating details of his eventful life.

Musicians lose out in Internet Radio Fairness Act
AFM President Ray Hair

By Ray Hair, international president, American Federation of Musicians
08/15/12 10:30 AM ET

Great music has always had a way of spreading, no matter the technology or the era. In ancient times, if a song had that special something, it was passed down orally, person to person, family to family, from generation to generation. Today, technology enables us to hear the latest hit almost as soon as it is created and recorded. And digital music innovators like LastFM, Music Choice, Pandora, SiriusXM and countless others are making it easier than ever to hear the music we love, whenever and wherever. Whether it's at home, at work, or on our mobile devices, the benefits of our nation's creative community are now available at the touch of a button (or click of a mouse).

Say No to Slashing Musicians' Pay

You may have heard from Pandora, asking you to contact Congress to support their "fairness" bill, the Internet Radio Fairness Act. But Pandora isn't telling you the whole story: the bill would slash paychecks to artists and labels simply to line Pandora's pockets.

We need you to write Congress now and tell them to SAY NO TO SLASHING MUSIC CREATORS' PAY.

The truth is that Pandora's dishonest proposal would be devastating to music creators. And while Pandora's misleading campaign claims that Pandora is suffering under the current, fair system of compensation, nothing could be further from the truth. Pandora is expected to clear $600 million in revenues next year under the current system, and has seen year to year revenue growth that would be the envy of many businesses and families in this time of slow economic growth.

Please CLICK HERE to send a message to your Senators and Representative, asking them to oppose this bill.

This is probably the most important letter that I have ever asked you to send to Congress. The Internet radio services have a tremendous listenership that will write to Congress in support of the bill without the context of its impact on musicians. It is important that our vast membership write every Member of Congress putting this issue into perspective. We support rate parity for all music platforms if that rate fairly compensates musicians, and if it includes terrestrial AM/FM radio.

Thank you for doing this.

Best,

Hal

Some may think I am preaching to the choir on environmental issues in Colorado but consider that in 2010 the city of San Francisco boasted a diversion rate of 85%. (Diversion rate is how much material is diverted from the land fill by recycling, compost, reducing and reusing) The same year Boulder's diversion rate was 35%! I think we can do better!

Or next time you are out having coffee look around the room to see how many folks are sitting having their drinks in non-recyclable paper cups.

I believe it is the little things that can add up to make a BIG difference! So come on out or invite your neighbor or friend and learn something new. YOU ARE A PART OF THE SOLUTION!!!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Please Contribute to continue the great work of Labor's Community Agency
passHeader-(1).gif
In the early days of labor, when a family needed help the union brothers and sisters would pass the hat. Everyone gave what they could.

Today, Labor's Community Agency works with hundreds of our brothers and sisters who need a little bit of a hand every now and then.  We do it because our motto is "Working, Serving and Giving."

In a recent and disappointing decision, we've taken a major blow to our funding sources, leaving us unable to continue to provide these services as early as next year.

We have an ambitious goal; but it's doable, and here's how.  If every brother and sister in labor and their friends and family donated as little as $5.00 per month (higher amounts get us there faster), we can continue the agency and serve those in desperate need. It is heartbreaking to think about our children on the street with no food. LCA helps them on your behalf.

To make it easy on you to donate monthly, please click the Donate Now button below to make a monthly donation through the secure GivingFirst.org site using a credit card or checking or savings account.  Also - don't forget to pass this on to
10 of your friends.  Your support is essential to us meeting our goal!

Violin Wanted -

Susie Peek loves her new violin and is NOW looking for a violin to use for outdoor gigs- will be best if it has a great sound, and crummy varnish!  Or if it's carbon fiber?  I'm guessing it will be in the 5K price area.  But less is fine, too, if the sound is really great for the price!  Call (303)433-8222 or email susiepeek@earthlink.net

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
