West Metro Fire District benefits from big-band event
|
 | Gordon Dooley, 91, smiles as trumpeter Charlie Smith plays a solo. |
LAKEWOOD - The dance floor was packed as swing music flowed in the air, all for the cause of helping firefighters buy radios that work. The Battle of the Big Bands was held Sunday at the Lakewood Elks Lodge as more than 300 people danced to three orchestras. The fundraiser was a benefit for the West Metro Fire Rescue Foundation. About 44 firefighters with the West Metropolitan Fire Protection District were deployed around the state this summer to fight the various wildfires. While they were out, many discovered their radios did not work properly. "We are going to purchase new ones with the money raised today," said Dean Wahl, who sits on the foundation's board of directors. Read On

Amanda Palmer Takes the High Road
|
Amanda Palmer, in her September 19 blog post, reversed her previous position and is now PAYING all of her participating musicians. Additionally, musicians who have already performed will be paid retroactively. Here's a small sample of what Ms. Palmer wrote:
"the fact that we all have access to each other and CAN discuss this stuff in realtime is what has MADE my success possible, even if it means i'm tied to the stake every once in a while. i'll take it.
for better or for worse, this whole kerfuffle has meant i've spent the past week thinking hard about this, listening to what everyone was saying and discussing. i hear you. i see your points. me and my band have discussed it at length. and we have decided we should pay all of our guest musicians. we have the power to do it, and we're going to do it. (in fact, we started doing it three shows ago.)"
Ms. Palmer, we would welcome you as a member of the Denver Musicians Association!
THANK YOU MS. PALMER!
Amanda Palmer will be performing at the Gothic Theater, in Englewood, CO
Friday, Sept 21.

The Commoditization of Symphony Orchestra Musicians
|
By: Kevin Case, Partner, Moen & Case LLP The recent headlines are horrifying. Musicians in top orchestras have been asked to take massive cuts in pay and benefits. Managers are slashing weeks and demanding reductions in the number of musicians - in some cases, by putting tenured players out on the street. Longstanding work rules are being gutted for reasons that have nothing to do with finances. It is a full-fledged assault on protections for musicians that took decades to achieve. Perhaps most disturbing, however, is the response from some orchestra managers and board chairs to the argument that players, faced with these draconian measures, will pack up and leave. The message is simple and blunt: we don't care. Go ahead and leave. After all, you're totally replaceable; we'll just hire one of those fantastic kids coming out the conservatories. Read On

Englewood Arts Presents announces its new "Starlight Rhythms" acoustic concert series! OPENING NIGHT: Friday, September 21, 2012 ~ Rob Drabkin, acoustic guitar / singer / songwriter Englewood Arts Presents proudly announces the opening of a new series of acoustic concert dates on Friday evenings, beginning September 21, 2012 at 7:30p in Hampden Hall (2nd level of the Englewood Civic Center, 1000 Englewood Parkway) and ranging in style from folk to jazz to blues. We have selected five ensembles to be featured on our debut series, all scheduled for a fun, exhilarating way to celebrate Friday nights: Rob Drabkin (Sept 21), Lionel Young (Nov 23), Katy Glassman (Jan 11), Andy Hackbarth in Concert (Feb 8), and Gypsy Swing Revue (Apr 5). There will be a cash bar - wine and beer. Tickets are a special $12 price for general admission ($10 for Seniors 60+) and are available at the door beginning one hour prior to concert start time. Cash, Checks, Visa and MasterCard accepted. Doors open at 7:00 pm. Easy, free parking; adjacent to Englewood Light Rail Station; handicap accessible. Rob Drabkin is a great opener for our series. His fresh take on songwriting, not to mention his guitar chops, have landed him some big gigs in recent years, including playing at Red Rock and The Mile High Festival. While playing his "tunes", he is recognized as having a good flare for improvisation that he learned from jazz which keeps his music fresh and new for audiences. "His melodic finger-picking and good balance of tunes displays his near-perfect guitar skills."
All concerts take place in Hampden Hall on the 2nd level of the Englewood Civic Center.

Some may think I am preaching to the choir on environmental issues in Colorado but consider that in 2010 the city of San Francisco boasted a diversion rate of 85%. (Diversion rate is how much material is diverted from the land fill by recycling, compost, reducing and reusing) The same year Boulder's diversion rate was 35%! I think we can do better! Or next time you are out having coffee look around the room to see how many folks are sitting having their drinks in non-recyclable paper cups. I believe it is the little things that can add up to make a BIG difference! So come on out or invite your neighbor or friend and learn something new. YOU ARE A PART OF THE SOLUTION!!!

Please Contribute to continue the great work of Labor's Community Agency
| In the early days of labor, when a family needed help the union brothers and sisters would pass the hat. Everyone gave what they could.
Today, Labor's Community Agency works with hundreds of our brothers and sisters who need a little bit of a hand every now and then. We do it because our motto is "Working, Serving and Giving."
In a recent and disappointing decision, we've taken a major blow to our funding sources, leaving us unable to continue to provide these services as early as next year. We have an ambitious goal; but it's doable, and here's how. If every brother and sister in labor and their friends and family donated as little as $5.00 per month (higher amounts get us there faster), we can continue the agency and serve those in desperate need. It is heartbreaking to think about our children on the street with no food. LCA helps them on your behalf. To make it easy on you to donate monthly, please click the Donate Now button below to make a monthly donation through the secure GivingFirst.org site using a credit card or checking or savings account. Also - don't forget to pass this on to 10 of your friends. Your support is essential to us meeting our goal!

In 2010 the Colorado General Assembly passed SB 10-028, the Colorado Work Share Program. SB 10-028 allows employers to cut the hours of employees equally, rather than lay workers off, during a slow period. Employees who have had their hours cut are eligible for unemployment benefits. The law is subject to the provisions of applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements.
The Department of Regulatory Agencies is seeking feedback on this program's usage. Please respond to this e-mail if your local has had experience with this program.

State of Working America: Middle Class Left Behind
| Sept. 12, 2012
The latest edition of "The State of Working America," from the Economic Policy Institute, tracks the economic growth of the middle class--the little there is--and finds that a middle-class family's income would have been an average of $19,000 higher per year by 2007 "if the share of growth claimed by the richest households had not grown so much over the past 30 years."

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
