Amanda Palmer 'Can't Afford' To Pay Her Backup Band

Professional musicians: what would it take for you to play on tour with one of your favorite artists? Would you do it for a stipend? For beer? For free?
According to Amanda Palmer, the privilege of playing on her Theater Is Evil tour is compensation enough for "professional-ish" horn and string players to join her onstage. The cabaret-punk superstar, who recently broke the high score on Kickstarter, put out a notice on her blog a few weeks ago asking her musically talented fans to volunteer to play dates on her worldwide tour. When it came to payment, she could only promise beer, high-fives, and good times.

Trumpeter Niehaus named Milwaukee Symphony's president

In a surprising development, principal trumpeter Mark Niehaus has been named the new president and executive director of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the MSO announced Wednesday.
Niehaus succeeds MaryEllen Gleason, who has resigned after two seasons as the MSO's executive to pursue other opportunities, according to a statement from board chairman Douglas Hagerman.
The MSO also announced a balanced budget for fiscal year 2012, which ended Aug. 31, noting that major gifts from the David and Julia Uihlein Charitable Foundation and William and Polly Van Dyke made that possible.
Niehaus taking over as the MSO's top executive might be likened to the Packers naming Clay Matthews their president. Niehaus has been the MSO's principal trumpeter since 1998, and has been a featured soloist, but will now put down his horn and pick up spreadsheets and donor calls.

A New Mexico community is up in arms after Camille Cruz, an 11-year-old in Farmington, was barred from using her violin -- a gift from her grandmother -- in orchestra class.
But the banned violin is no ordinary instrument: it's purple, leading Tibbett Middle School officials to require that the sixth grader use a traditionally colored violin, or not be a part of the orchestra.

As classic music lovers anticipate the October 5 season opener featuring
works by Russian masters Rachmaninoff and Rimsky-Korsakov, a contract offer
has finally been tended to the musicians of the San Antonio Symphony.
But all is still not well in the musical trenches. After failing to sign a
contract for the 2011-2012 season, symphony musicians and management settled
in September, 2011 on a handshake continuance of the previous contract that
awarded - according to Craig Sorgi of the symphony musicians negotiating
committee - players an annual base salary of $31,350 for a 30-week season.
Of last year's intended season, only 26 weeks were initially scheduled,
though an extra week was added later.
The musicians claim they were shorted three weeks pay; management disagrees.
During the long, hot summer months negotiations for a 2012-2013 season
contract remained dead in the water. Then, as the symphony's fiscal year
came to a close August 31, musicians were notified that monies to cover the
missing three weeks had not been attained.

Daria's music education includes ten years of studying cello with Kazimierz Wilkomirski, one of Europe's most renowned cellists, composers, and conductors.
Her profession later blossomed with a Master of Arts in Cello Performance from the Frederic Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw, Poland and an endless list of performances with top groups and in many scenes throughout Europe, the U.S., the Caribbean, and North Africa.

Englewood Arts Presents announces its new "Starlight Rhythms" acoustic concert series!
OPENING NIGHT: Friday, September 21, 2012 ~ Rob Drabkin, acoustic guitar / singer / songwriter
Englewood Arts Presents proudly announces the opening of a new series of acoustic concert dates on Friday evenings, beginning September 21, 2012 at 7:30p in Hampden Hall (2nd level of the Englewood Civic Center, 1000 Englewood Parkway) and ranging in style from folk to jazz to blues.
We have selected five ensembles to be featured on our debut series, all scheduled for a fun, exhilarating way to celebrate Friday nights: Rob Drabkin (Sept 21), Lionel Young (Nov 23), Katy Glassman (Jan 11), Andy Hackbarth in Concert (Feb 8), and Gypsy Swing Revue (Apr 5). There will be a cash bar - wine and beer. Tickets are a special $12 price for general admission ($10 for Seniors 60+) and are available at the door beginning one hour prior to concert start time. Cash, Checks, Visa and MasterCard accepted. Doors open at 7:00 pm. Easy, free parking; adjacent to Englewood Light Rail Station; handicap accessible.
Rob Drabkin is a great opener for our series. His fresh take on songwriting, not to mention his guitar chops, have landed him some big gigs in recent years, including playing at Red Rock and The Mile High Festival. While playing his "tunes", he is recognized as having a good flare for improvisation that he learned from jazz which keeps his music fresh and new for audiences. "His melodic finger-picking and good balance of tunes displays his near-perfect guitar skills."
All concerts take place in Hampden Hall on the 2nd level of the Englewood Civic Center.

Some may think I am preaching to the choir on environmental issues in Colorado but consider that in 2010 the city of San Francisco boasted a diversion rate of 85%. (Diversion rate is how much material is diverted from the land fill by recycling, compost, reducing and reusing) The same year Boulder's diversion rate was 35%! I think we can do better!
Or next time you are out having coffee look around the room to see how many folks are sitting having their drinks in non-recyclable paper cups.

Polish cellist Daria Joanna has solid experience performing in numerous concerts, recitals, recording sessions, and tours across the world: all over Europe, North Africa, the Caribbean, and the United States.
Daria studied cello with one of Europe's most renowned cellists, composers, and conductors, Kazimierz Wilkomirski, and received her Master of Arts in Cello Performance from the Frederic Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw, Poland.
Israeli pianist Leah Peer has performed for over thirty years as a soloist, chamber collaborator, orchestra pianist, and vocal accompanist both nationally and internationally with performances in Israel, New York, Florida, and Colorado.
Leah maintains a private studio where she teaches piano, voice, and theory; serves as the Colorado Hebrew Chorale Assistant Conductor and Board Vice President; and sings with the Colorado Women's Chorale.

ENGLEWOOD ARTS PRESENTS opens its 2012-13 Chamber Music Of The Masters series on Saturday, September 29 at 2:00p in Hampden Hall (2nd level of the Englewood Civic Center). The new season will continue to showcase Colorado Symphony musicians and other area professional musicians in performances of smaller ensemble chamber music repertoire.

Opening the series will be The Beeson Ensemble. Headed by Catherine Beeson (the Colorado Symphony's Principal Violist), the ensemble will perform twice this season in different formations and programs. The September 29 concert will feature Allegra Wermuth and Anne-Marie Hoffman, violin; Catherine Beeson and Phillip Stevens, viola; and Judith McIntyre, cello. The program will include Phillip Magnuson's Little Suite, Villa Lobos' Duo for Violin and Viola, and Brahms' String Quintet in G major, Opus 111.

Members of the Colorado Bach Ensemble and members of the Colorado Chamber Players join forces to offer a benefit concert for the victims of the most recent mass shooting on July 20 in Aurora. Program includes Gabriel Faure's Requiem, Ubi Caritas by Maurice Duruflé, and the Geistliches Lied, op. 30 by Johannes Brahms. CBE has been working closely with the City of Aurora to coordinate the event. The City of Aurora will be notifying the victims and the families whose lives were touched by the tragedy.

IN OCTOBER, the CCP presents Music of Mark Carlson. Mark Carlson is a composer and performer based in Los Angeles, and is on the faculty at the Herb Alpert School of Music at UCLA. Thanks in part to a generous grant from New Music USA/Meet the Composer, Carlson will spend 5 days in Denver on aCreative Connections visit. Carlson will work with composition students at Denver School of the Arts, speak on Colorado Public Radio, and give a pre-concert talk at the CCP's opening gala concert at the brand new Opus Two Hall in Lafayette. The CCP will perform three seminal works of Mark Carlson: Piano Quartet (1992), View from a Hilltop (2009) and Hall of Mirrors (1999).

Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra Presents
Every month, MJO features two different high school jazz ensembles in concert at Dazzle! Playing the second and third Monday of each month (with some exceptions), the school plays one set followed by a set from MJO. The big finale includes both bands on stage featuring soloists from both groups. While newspaper editorial boards, right-wing pundits and school privateers are criticizing Chicago's 29,000 public school teachers and educational professionals who were forced out on strike, Chicagoans-especially parents-are backing the teachers.
The latest poll shows the teachers with 55 percent approval from "voting Chicago households" and 66 percent support from parents of public school students. "The kicker," writes Laura Clawson on Daily Kos, "is that the poll was done by We Ask America, a generally Republican pollster, on behalf of Capitol Fax."

A judge has ruled Gov. Scott Walker's collective bargaining reform unconstitutional, setting up a new round in the state's epic union battle. John Avlon on why it's a fight worth having.
Republicans in VP nominee Paul Ryan's home state of Wisconsin got unwelcome news late Friday afternoon when Judge Juan B. Colas declared significant portions of collective-bargaining reform unconstitutional.
This was Governor Scott Walker's signature reform, the result of a hard-won policy fight that ended up provoking his unsuccessful recall earlier this year. And while the collective bargaining reform may have been ideologically motivated, it helped close a multi-million dollar budget gap in the state.
Since Walker took on the public sector unions-exempting police and firefighters-Wisconsin has been positioned as ground zero for an ideological Armageddon. Unions unleashed lengthy protests that presaged the Occupy Movement, while fiscal conservatives saw an opening for ongoing reforms that could be exported to other states.

The latest edition of "The State of Working America," from the Economic Policy Institute, tracks the economic growth of the middle class--the little there is--and finds that a middle-class family's income would have been an average of $19,000 higher per year by 2007 "if the share of growth claimed by the richest households had not grown so much over the past 30 years."

| The Parker Symphony Orchestra is a mostly volunteer community orchestra which performs 4 concerts a year at the beautiful new Parker Arts and Cultural Events (PACE) center in Parker, Colorado. Our dress rehearsals and concerts are at the PACE center, all other rehearsals are at Cherry Creek High School (9300 East Union, Greenwood Village 80111) on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 until 9:15PM. Metro Community Band Openings

Comprised of some Metropolitan State College students and community members, the band under the direction of Gerald Endsley meets on Tuesday evenings from 7-9 P.M. in the King Center Concert Hall on the Auraria campus. All wind and percussion instruements are welcome and there are no fees, auditions, or chair placements. The band generaly shares two concerts per semester with other metro ensembles. Community Band Seeking New Members (Edgewater/Lakewood)

Our non-profit Mile High Community Band seeks musicians of all ages, teen through adult, and at all levels of accomplishment, to join us for rehearsals on Thursday nights in Edgewater (just west of Denver).
Our organization's mission is to provide rewarding music education and performance opportunities for youth and adults at all skill levels. We have various bands for different skill levels, beginning through advanced, including jazz/blues and concert bands. In particular, we welcome additional brass and woodwind musicians.
We meet Thursday evenings at North High School (2960 Speer Blvd Denver) for rehearsals. Monthly memberships begin at $25-$35/month, but we can waive fees and provide instruments for those who need them - no one with an interest in playing music will be turned away. Family discounts also available.

JOIN YOR! (Youth Orchestra of the Rockies)
| This year, in lieu of traditional auditions, the YOR begins the season with two open rehearsals on August 19 and 26, 2012 from 3:00 - 5:30 PM at Ridgeview Classical Schools, 1800 South Lemay Avenue, Fort Collins, CO. No pre-regisration is required for these open rehearsals.
Building on the success of last season's collaborations between the Concert Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra, this
year the two orchestras will combine their efforts even more. Rehearsals will begin with strings, move on to works with some winds, and end with larger orchestral works. Open rehearsal (August 19 and 26, 2012) schedule: All music will be supplied, with proper bowings. A completed medical form is required for participation in open rehearsals. Enrollment forms will be available at open rehearsals and will be due at the first regular rehearsal (September 9, 2012) along with a $25 non-refundable enrollment fee. Tuition is $65 per month (3 payments in Fall semester, 4 in Spring). Scholarships may be available (obtain a form at the check-in desk). YOR supports school music programs! As part of the enrollment process, we will require confirmation that each musician is participating in her/his instrumental program if one exists. We welcome homeschool students. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
