Entertaining in Retirement Communities
By Rod Taylor
Rod Taylor
Rod Taylor

A year or so ago I was one of the casualties of our current economic crisis. Since industry today looks like a deserted mine field, I decided to see if there was a job I could do that wasn't subject to old age or being shipped offshore! My first thought was my first love, music and entertaining.

It's no secret that club work has, for many years, been sparse to say the least, so I decided to take a look at what was happening in the local retirement communities. That was an eye opener to say the least. My preliminary investigation showed me that in Colorado, the retirement industry is one of the fastest growing industries we have, and that across the United States, 10,000 people per day are retiring!

Some may think I am preaching to the choir on environmental issues in Colorado but consider that in 2010 the city of San Francisco boasted a diversion rate of 85%. (Diversion rate is how much material is diverted from the land fill by recycling, compost, reducing and reusing) The same year Boulder's diversion rate was 35%! I think we can do better!

Or next time you are out having coffee look around the room to see how many folks are sitting having their drinks in non-recyclable paper cups.

I believe it is the little things that can add up to make a BIG difference! So come on out or invite your neighbor or friend and learn something new. YOU ARE A PART OF THE SOLUTION!!!

Rob Drabkin
Rob Drabkin
Englewood Arts Presents announces its new "Starlight Rhythms" acoustic concert series!
OPENING NIGHT:  Friday, September 21, 2012 ~ Rob Drabkin, acoustic guitar / singer / songwriter
Englewood Arts Presents proudly announces the opening of a new series of acoustic concert dates on Friday evenings, beginning September 21, 2012 at 7:30p in Hampden Hall (2nd level of the Englewood Civic Center, 1000 Englewood Parkway) and ranging in style from folk to jazz to blues.

We have selected five ensembles to be featured on our debut series, all scheduled for a fun, exhilarating way to celebrate Friday nights:  Rob Drabkin (Sept 21), Lionel Young (Nov 23), Katy Glassman (Jan 11), Andy Hackbarth in Concert (Feb 8), and Gypsy Swing Revue (Apr 5).  There will be a cash bar - wine and beer.  Tickets are a special $12 price for general admission ($10 for Seniors 60+) and are available at the door beginning one hour prior to concert start time.  Cash, Checks, Visa and MasterCard accepted.  Doors open at 7:00 pm.  Easy, free parking; adjacent to Englewood Light Rail Station; handicap accessible.

Rob Drabkin is a great opener for our series.  His fresh take on songwriting, not to mention his guitar chops, have landed him some big gigs in recent years, including playing at Red Rock and The Mile High Festival.  While playing his "tunes", he is recognized as having a good flare for improvisation that he learned from jazz which keeps his music fresh and new for audiences.   "His melodic finger-picking and good balance of tunes displays his near-perfect guitar skills."

All concerts take place in Hampden Hall on the 2nd level of the Englewood Civic Center.

Every month, MJO features two different high school jazz ensembles in concert at Dazzle! Playing the second and third Monday of each month (with some exceptions), the school plays one set followed by a set from MJO. The big finale includes both bands on stage featuring soloists from both groups. One of MJO's missions is to support jazz in the schools and this program, in our 6th year, continues to be wildly successful. Reservation ALWAYS recommended at Dazzle (303-839-5100). Great food, great atmosphere and always a great night of big band music! Check our website (MetropolitanJazzOrchestra.org) for our calendar and to confirm each month's schedule.

AUDITION & EMPLOYMENT NOTICES

position open - Wind Ensemble Music Director

The Longmont Youth Symphony, a premier youth orchestra serving young musicians in St. Vrain Valley School District and surrounding areas, is searching for an experienced Wind Ensemble Music Director to lead our group of dedicated young wind musicians.  The position description is posted on the LYS website and attached to this message.

The vision for the LYS Wind Ensemble program is to provide unique rehearsal and performance opportunities that are not available to young wind players elsewhere as well as to prepare them for participation in the full symphony orchestra. LYS seeks a candidate who would be able and willing to help us shape and implement this vision, while growing the membership and increasing the visibility of the Wind Ensemble. In addition to being a key part of the growth and success of LYS, the candidate will have ample opportunities to interact with the local music and non-profit community and be part of a proud local tradition that makes a positive impact on students' lives.

We would appreciate it very much if you could forward this announcement to qualified candidates.  To apply, download the position description, and send an e-mail cover letter, a resume detailing your qualifications for the position, and references to info@longmontyouthsymphony.org.

LABOR & POLITICS

Stop the Union Busting in Douglas County

By Michael Dubrovich (Contact)

To be delivered to: Governor John Hickenlooper

Gov. Hickenlooper, It is time for you to take a stand for workers' rights by ordering the Colorado Dept. of Labor and Employment to intervene in the dispute between the Douglas County School Federation of Teachers and the DCSD Board of Education, and put an end to their union-busting tactics.

On Sept.5, the Douglas County Board of Education passed a resolution to no longer negotiate a collective bargaining agreement with the teachers' union, the DCF. This is just one more example of the nationwide Republican plan to break public employee unions. Tell Gov. John Hickenlooper to direct the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment to intervene in the dispute as the union has requested.

Paul Krugman
Paul Krugman - Photo by Fred R. Conrad/The New York Times

Does anyone remember the American Jobs Act? A year ago President Obama proposed boosting the economy with a combination of tax cuts and spending increases, aimed in particular at sustaining state and local government employment. Independent analysts reacted favorably. For example, the consulting firm Macroeconomic Advisers estimated that the act would add 1.3 million jobs by the end of 2012.

There were good reasons for these positive assessments. Although you'd never know it from political debate, worldwide experience since the financial crisis struck in 2008 has overwhelmingly confirmed the proposition that fiscal policy "works," that temporary increases in spending boost employment in a depressed economy (and that spending cuts increase unemployment). The Jobs Act would have been just what the doctor ordered.
But the bill went nowhere, of course, blocked by Republicans in Congress. And now, having prevented Mr. Obama from implementing any of his policies, those same Republicans are pointing to disappointing job numbers and declaring that the president's policies have failed.

YOUTH ORCHESTRAS / EDUCATIONAL ENSEMBLES

Building on the success of last season's collaborations between the Concert Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra, this

A completed medical form is required for participation in open rehearsals. Enrollment forms will be available at open rehearsals and will be due at the first regular rehearsal (September 9, 2012) along with a $25 non-refundable enrollment fee. Tuition is $65 per month (3 payments in Fall semester, 4 in Spring). Scholarships may be available (obtain a form at the check-in desk).

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
