Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra likely to cancel first 2 weeks of season
|
Jay Harvey Indianapolis Star August 31, 2012
Saddled with $8 million in debt and facing a revenue shortfall of more than $11 million this year, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra is likely to cancel the first two weeks of this season.
The ISO's contract with its musicians is set to expire at midnight Sunday, and the sides are far apart on each of the key issues. If they do not reach an agreement by Sept. 7, the ISO says it will be forced to cancel its 2012-13 season opener, scheduled for Sept. 14 at Hilbert Circle Theatre with music director Krzysztof Urbanski on the podium. The musicians union has stated that it is unable to continue negotiations until Sept. 13 due to scheduling conflicts.
On Tuesday, The Indianapolis Star reported details of the negotiations, which laid out the ISO's intention to reduce the size of the orchestra, its pay, and the annual schedule while converting the musicians' pension into a 403(B) contribution plan. The ISO declined to comment on the specifics of the negotiations but spoke with The Star on Friday about the scope and severity of the problems it is facing. Read On

"What Can I Do?" multimedia environmental concerts
This is a 60-75 minute educational keynote presentation featuring the photography of John Fielder, Karl Snyder and Laurie Dameron, video, information and live music.
| Laurie Dameron |
Some may think I am preaching to the choir on environmental issues in Colorado but consider that in 2010 the city of San Francisco boasted a diversion rate of 85%. (Diversion rate is how much material is diverted from the land fill by recycling, compost, reducing and reusing) The same year Boulder's diversion rate was 35%! I think we can do better! Or next time you are out having coffee look around the room to see how many folks are sitting having their drinks in non-recyclable paper cups. I believe it is the little things that can add up to make a BIG difference! So come on out or invite your neighbor or friend and learn something new. YOU ARE A PART OF THE SOLUTION!!!

Deja Blu - searching for Bass Player: vocals a +
|
Deja Blu is an established regional 5 piece dance band with a female lead singer. We are going into our 12th year of making music. All of us sing. We have a packed summer schedule filled with weddings, summer festivals and corporate events. While the money is very good, we are all mature, seasoned players who have full time jobs that are flexible and allow for some travel.
This is a part time job working for one of Colorado's premier dance bands. We average 40-50 shows/year. We work with a full time sound man, have a full time manager who takes care of the business end of things and we own our high end PA System with lights.
We are looking for a male with years of stage experience who is versatile, a very quick learner, has chops that can play a variety of music from Country, Top 40, Classic Rock, Jazz, Blues to Motown. We would love to find someone who can sing a bit.
You must have pro gear & attire (tux & suit), have reliable transportation for mountain travel. Have a cell phone & email account that you check often - it's how we communicate with our manager. Professional appearance is crucial.
Please, no free-lance or guys who play in multiple bands. Sorry, it won't work for us ~ it's just too hard to manage schedules. We all feel very blessed to be at this stage in our lives where we can continue to play with extremely talented musicians who we consider friends and play some very sweet gigs. Looking for like-minded bass players.
Please feel free to call Liz @ (303) 517-9852

A Labor Day Message from Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis
|
On the first Monday of September, we honor the workers who built the world's strongest economy. This Labor Day, as the U.S. Department of Labor approaches our centennial celebration, I take extra pride in the historic efforts of today's workers to drive our recovery by learning new skills and adapting to new challenges.
For more than two centuries, the prospect of work has drawn people to our shores to pursue new opportunities and dreams of a better life. The demands on our workers have changed over the generations, but we've always risen to the occasion.
During the Industrial Age, factory workers saw their knowledge and paychecks grow as they mastered new processes to mass produce everything from automobiles to armaments. Following the Great Depression, more than 6 million women joined the workforce, clocking in at shipyards, lumber mills and foundries, and their production helped us win the Great War. And the Internet age carried the talents of our workers across the globe, as our ideas and products reached new markets and brought the world closer together.
As I mark my fourth Labor Day as the nation's secretary of labor, I'm inspired by job seekers from all walks of life in this country going back to school and upgrading their skills to match the demands of a 21st century global economy. I'm impressed by communities coming together and new partnerships being formed among employers, labor unions and community colleges. And I'm reminded that for this federal agency and this administration, Labor Day has been, and will always be, every single day.
This Labor Day, we lift up American workers who are doing what it takes to reinvent themselves to ensure that our future is even brighter than our past.
Watch the Secretary's Labor Day message on YouTube and visit our Labor Day 2012 page.

Susie Peek loves her new violin and is NOW looking for a violin to use for outdoor gigs- will be best if it has a great sound, and crummy varnish! Or if it's carbon fiber? I'm guessing it will be in the 5K price area. But less is fine, too, if the sound is really great for the price! Call (303)433-8222 or email susiepeek@earthlink.net

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
