Silenced: ASO used as musical "prop," audience hears recorded music at Il Divo concert
Whats Cookin
Il Divo's management preferred prerecorded music to live ASO musicians.

August 14, 2012
By Mark Gresham
ArtsATL

Sunday night's concert at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre was billed as "Il Divo and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra," but what the audience heard over the sound system was not the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Instead, it heard prerecorded audio tracks by an entirely different orchestra.

The Il Divo singers were live, but the orchestra was relegated to the role of visual window dressing.

Read On

Editor's Note: Il Divo performed two concerts "with orchestra" on Aug 18 & 19 at Denver's Wells Fargo Theater in the DPAC Complex. Il Divo's promo boasts a collaboration with "famed orchestras across each city", but we still don't know which orchestra was given the honors? Please contact DMA Vice President Thomas Blomster (blomster@dmamusic.org) if you have any information.
Collective Bargaining:  Five Statements From Management That Musicians Should Always Question
By: Kevin Case, Partner, Moen & Case LLP

It is a difficult time for orchestra musicians to be bargaining. Managements throughout the country are seeking major concessions on pay, health care, pensions, and work rules. Sometimes those requests are a legitimate response to real problems; other times, managements are just being opportunistic.

It is not always easy to tell the difference, and circumstances will
vary widely from one orchestra to the next.  But musician bargaining committees should always be on the lookout for certain jargon that managements like to use during negotiations.  Here are a few statements musicians should never take at face value: Read On

Some may think I am preaching to the choir on environmental issues in Colorado but consider that in 2010 the city of San Francisco boasted a diversion rate of 85%. (Diversion rate is how much material is diverted from the land fill by recycling, compost, reducing and reusing) The same year Boulder's diversion rate was 35%! I think we can do better!

Or next time you are out having coffee look around the room to see how many folks are sitting having their drinks in non-recyclable paper cups.

I believe it is the little things that can add up to make a BIG difference! So come on out or invite your neighbor or friend and learn something new. YOU ARE A PART OF THE SOLUTION!!!

Deja Blu - searching for Bass Player: vocals a +

Deja Blu Dance Band Deja Blu is an established regional 5 piece dance band with a female lead singer. We are going into our 12th year of making music. All of us sing. We have a packed summer schedule filled with weddings, summer festivals and corporate events. While the money is very good, we are all mature, seasoned players who have full time jobs that are flexible and allow for some travel.

This is a part time job working for one of Colorado's premier dance bands. We average 40-50 shows/year. We work with a full time sound man, have a full time manager who takes care of the business end of things and we own our high end PA System with lights.

We are looking for a male with years of stage experience who is versatile, a very quick learner, has chops that can play a variety of music from Country, Top 40, Classic Rock, Jazz, Blues to Motown. We would love to find someone who can sing a bit.

You must have pro gear & attire (tux & suit), have reliable transportation for mountain travel. Have a cell phone & email account that you check often - it's how we communicate with our manager. Professional appearance is crucial.

Please, no free-lance or guys who play in multiple bands. Sorry, it won't work for us ~ it's just too hard to manage schedules. We all feel very blessed to be at this stage in our lives where we can continue to play with extremely talented musicians who we consider friends and play some very sweet gigs. Looking for like-minded bass players.

Please feel free to call Liz @ (303) 517-9852

Or check out our website  www.dejabluband.com

Bain Capital Linked to Union Suppression Case
8/17/2012
Jackie Tortora

Although Mitt Romney continues to try and distance himself from his record of offshoring U.S. jobs overseas during his tenure at Bain Capital, a new report by the Financial Times' Robin Harding shows there were even more anti-worker tactics occurring under Romney's watch at the company. Now we might understand more about why he boasted earlier this year that he's "taken on union bosses before."

YOUTH ORCHESTRAS / EDUCATIONAL ENSEMBLES

A completed medical form is required for participation in open rehearsals. Enrollment forms will be available at open rehearsals and will be due at the first regular rehearsal (September 9, 2012) along with a $25 non-refundable enrollment fee. Tuition is $65 per month (3 payments in Fall semester, 4 in Spring). Scholarships may be available (obtain a form at the check-in desk).

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
