In Memory - Elaine Lenicheck
|
Elaine Cage Lenicheck April 9, 1925 - July 26, 2012 Longtime Denver resident, Elaine Cage Lenicheck, passed from this world on July 26, 2012 at Holly Creek Retirement Community in Centennial, CO. A native Denverite, Elaine was born to Arthur and Hazel Cage in their house at 2979 Yates St. Elaine knew early in life that she wanted to be a professional musician. Her father purchased a second-hand flute for Elaine and she began flute lessons in junior high school. Showing her early mastery, she became principal flutist in the Denver Junior Symphony Orchestra while at North High School and, subsequently, was chosen to play in the Denver Civic Symphony, the amateur predecessor to the Denver Symphony Orchestra. After graduating from high school in 1942, she was offered an audition with Eastman School of Music, but instead chose to attend the University of Denver where she met and married her soul mate, trumpeter and conductor Ed Lenicheck. During Elaine's time at the University of Denver, she fulfilled her musical dream, accepting the position of first piccolo and third flute with the Denver Symphony Orchestra, a position she held for 43 years until she retired in 1986. In addition to private teaching, Elaine was active in various musical groups such as the Central City Opera, Denver Municipal Band, Wednesday Music Party (a local womens' music club in Denver), and a "Young Audiences" woodwind quintet formed with members from the Denver Symphony. In 1989, Elaine was honored to be the first recipient of the "Outstanding Alumni Award" presented by the Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver, an achievement of which she was very proud. During her retirement, she also greatly enjoyed volunteering, giving several years to Young Musicians Foundation of Colorado and logging over 3900 hours at the main gift shop at the University of Colorado Hospital. She is survived by her three children: Rob (& Lucinda) Lenicheck of Palo Alto, CA, Debra (& Mark) Schrepel of Gaston, OR and Diane (& Doug) Hutchinson of Aurora, CO. Elaine was also extraordinarily proud of her 7 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Memorial service is scheduled for August 17th at First Plymouth Congregational Church at 2:00 PM. The family requests donations in lieu of flowers to the Denver Municipal Band.

New Agreement with Denver Center Attractions
|
The DMA proud to announce a new collective bargaining agreement with Denver Center Attractions. DCA is the region's prominent presenter of Tony Award-winning shows and touring musicals. Because of the fine work of DCA and Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA), Denver is now a "pick city" on the touring circuit, enabling Denver to launch national tours such as The Book of Mormon and to debut bound-for-Broadway engagements such as The Little Mermaid. The term of the agreement goes from September 1, 2012 to August 31, 2014. The first-year rate for Traveling Shows will be $170.31. The first-year rate for Local Shows will be $152.88. Additionally, there will be a 10.9% employer pension contribution on all services. Special thanks go to our Negotiation Committee Chairperson Jim Vaughn, and to committee members Art Bouton, Gary Buss, Mark Foster, Michelle Orman and Ron Bland (DMA officer/representative). We are also most thankful to DCA Director of Programming John Ekeberg and DCPA President/CEO Randy Weeks. We look forward to continuing our relationship for many years to come.

Bob Garner, who brought Broadway to Denver, dies at age 80

|
Robert Garner poses in front of the iconic image for "Les Miserables" in 1991. "He was the ultimate showman," said Nancy Rebek, who became public-relations director for Denver Center Attractions. "He had a thousand wonderful, crazy ideas ... and more often than not, they worked." (John Sunderland, Denver Post file) He was an entrepreneur and an impresario, a charismatic wheeler-dealer who brought Broadway to the Mile High City. Were it not for Robert Garner, such powerhouse entities as Disney and producer Cameron Mackintosh probably would not have even considered bringing, or beginning, national tours of such blockbusters as "Les Miserables," "The Phantom of the Opera," "Miss Saigon," "The Little Mermaid" and "Lion King" here. Garner died Thursday at his Denver home following a brief illness. He was 80. He is survived by a sister.

Olympics- Musicians irked over offers of no or little pay
|
Todd Martens Los Angeles Times July 25, 2012 Music fans might want to pay close attention to the Summer Olympics, especially because the organizing committee foreshadowed its intentions during the closing ceremony four years ago in Beijing. There, Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page and pop vocalist Leona Lewis emerged from a double-decker bus to perform Whole Lotta Love - signaling a pop-culture focus for London. Secrets and rumors still surround the Friday opening ceremony, with the latest that spy figure James Bond (Daniel Craig) will open the show and that Paul McCartney will close it. In any case, music is sure to play a pivotal role at the opening event - being directed by Danny Boyle. His films, including Slumdog Millionaire, have used soundtracks almost as characters. A shortlist of potential songs to be played at the ceremony was leaked last month to the British media. It included numbers by the Clash, the Rolling Stones, the Sex Pistols and the Who. For the first time, music from the opening and closing ceremonies will be digitally released by online retailers immediately after the event. The organizing committee commissioned five original songs for the games, featuring selections from artists as diverse as rapper Dizzee Rascal and the theatrical rockers of Muse. The two-week marriage of sport and music hasn't come without tension, though. Some artists have started an online petition against what they think is a lack of proper compensation by Olympic organizers. The committee has reached an agreement with Britain's Musicians' Union that clears the way for volunteers and headlining artists to perform free. So what's the problem? The fine print states that "professional" musicians are to be paid.Read On

Peter Dobrin Philadelphia Inquirer July 31, 2012 U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Eric L. Frank approved the association's reorganization plan June 28, but with the writing of checks and completion of other administrative matters Monday and Tuesday, the curtain officially comes down on perhaps the most perilous episode in the history of the organization that supports and presents the storied ensemble.

Deja Blu - searching for Bass Player: vocals a +
|
Deja Blu is an established regional 5 piece dance band with a female lead singer. We are going into our 12th year of making music. All of us sing. We have a packed summer schedule filled with weddings, summer festivals and corporate events. While the money is very good, we are all mature, seasoned players who have full time jobs that are flexible and allow for some travel.
This is a part time job working for one of Colorado's premier dance bands. We average 40-50 shows/year. We work with a full time sound man, have a full time manager who takes care of the business end of things and we own our high end PA System with lights.
We are looking for a male with years of stage experience who is versatile, a very quick learner, has chops that can play a variety of music from Country, Top 40, Classic Rock, Jazz, Blues to Motown. We would love to find someone who can sing a bit.
You must have pro gear & attire (tux & suit), have reliable transportation for mountain travel. Have a cell phone & email account that you check often - it's how we communicate with our manager. Professional appearance is crucial.
Please, no free-lance or guys who play in multiple bands. Sorry, it won't work for us ~ it's just too hard to manage schedules. We all feel very blessed to be at this stage in our lives where we can continue to play with extremely talented musicians who we consider friends and play some very sweet gigs. Looking for like-minded bass players.
Please feel free to call Liz @ (303) 517-9852

Fight Over Immigrant Firings
|
 | Protesters this month outside the Palermo's Pizza factory in Milwaukee, where workers have been on strike since June 1. |
By STEVEN GREENHOUSE and STEVEN YACCINO New York Times Published: July 27, 2012 MILWAUKEE - On May 27, about 150 workers from Palermo's Pizza factory here, representing three-fourths of its production workers, met to sign a petition saying they wanted to unionize. They say they gave the petition to management two days later. Around the same time, Palermo's delivered letters to 89 immigrant workers, asking them to provide documentation verifying that they had the right to work in the United States. Ten days later, almost all of them were fired. Labor organizers assert that Palermo's, one of the nation's largest producers of frozen pizza, was trying to snuff out a unionization drive in its infancy. The company says it was merely responding to warnings it had received from federal immigration authorities to fire unauthorized workers or face hefty fines.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
