Denver pianist Hank Troy provides music for silent films at Chatauqua
|
By Lisa Kennedy
The Denver Post Posted: 07/08/2012
 |
Hank Troy accompanied the Harold Lloyd silent film "Safety Last" on piano at the Chautauqua Auditorium in Boulder. (Karl Gehring, The Denver Post)
|
The artist was a few minutes into his work when a joker of a German shorthaired pointer ran across the stage at Chautauqua's beautiful barn of an auditorium in Boulder. Hank Troy did not miss a beat. Sitting at a piano, he kept his eyes on a different prankster: Harold Lloyd. One of silent comedy's greats - and incidentally a Elitch Theatre alum - Harold Lloyd was getting tossed out of an office on his keister again and again in "Ask Father," a 1919 slapstick romp. Troy's eyes were trained on the action. The pointer exited stage right, down a set of stairs. The pianist played on into the next film, the classic comedy "Safety Last," famous for harrowing, hilarious scenes of Lloyd hanging from a clock. The warm, bearded musician has been providing piano accompaniment for most of the silent films around the Denver area - yes, even before Michel Hazanavicius' silent homage, "The Artist," won a slew of Oscars.

Orchestra musicians, management hope for agreement, fear walkout
|
by Chris Roberts, Minnesota Public Radio July 18, 2012
ST. PAUL, Minn. - It's unusual for a metro area to have two major orchestras.
It's even more unusual for those orchestras to be engaged in contract talks with their musicians at the same time. But that is what's happening right now with the Minnesota Orchestra and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra.
Both institutions face severe budget shortfalls and are exploring deep reductions in costs. Some fear that could lead to a walkout by musicians on both sides of the river.

UK Artists angered by copyright plan
|
July 11, 2012 BBC News Entertainment & Arts Members of Radiohead and Pink Floyd are among the musicians angered by plans for a new EU copyright law. They say the draft law, intended to give performers, composers and producers more rights over their royalties, does not go far enough. Artists including Pink Floyd's Nick Mason have signed a letter accusing the European Commission of "breaking promises" to tackle missing pay. The Commission insists the plans will modernise the way money is distributed. Performers, producers and writers are supposed to earn royalties every time their music is played on radio, television or public spaces. The money is collected by about 250 societies around Europe - but the Commission says many of them hold on to "substantial amounts" of that cash. Read On

Radio Days Are Here Again
|
NORMAN LEBRECHT STANDPOINT July/August 2012
Eagerly awaited: Sakari Oramo, the BBC Symphony Orchestra's new Finnish chief conductor (Heikki Tuuli)
Some weeks ago, in a conversation about the deep orchestral cuts and disbandments that are searing Western Europe, I let slip an outmoded clich. Trying to distinguish one entity from another, I suggested that players in radio orchestras with secure rights and pensions were likely to sit less close to the edge of their seats at work than those in state and independent ensembles.
A riot of reactions rocked me back in my seat. "The size of your pension has nothing to do with how you play," snapped one respondent. Humble pie was promptly eaten by your shamefaced columnist and peace was duly restored, but the contretemps set me thinking about how much had quietly changed in the orchestral sector since the turn of the century and how some radio orchestras have seized the moment to achieve an unforeseen dominance. Deja Blu - searching for Bass Player: vocals a +
|
Deja Blu is an established regional 5 piece dance band with a female lead singer. We are going into our 12th year of making music. All of us sing. We have a packed summer schedule filled with weddings, summer festivals and corporate events. While the money is very good, we are all mature, seasoned players who have full time jobs that are flexible and allow for some travel.
This is a part time job working for one of Colorado's premier dance bands. We average 40-50 shows/year. We work with a full time sound man, have a full time manager who takes care of the business end of things and we own our high end PA System with lights.
We are looking for a male with years of stage experience who is versatile, a very quick learner, has chops that can play a variety of music from Country, Top 40, Classic Rock, Jazz, Blues to Motown. We would love to find someone who can sing a bit.
You must have pro gear & attire (tux & suit), have reliable transportation for mountain travel. Have a cell phone & email account that you check often - it's how we communicate with our manager. Professional appearance is crucial.
Please, no free-lance or guys who play in multiple bands. Sorry, it won't work for us ~ it's just too hard to manage schedules. We all feel very blessed to be at this stage in our lives where we can continue to play with extremely talented musicians who we consider friends and play some very sweet gigs. Looking for like-minded bass players.
Please feel free to call Liz @ (303) 517-9852

Take Action to Save the Postal Service Today!
| This week, the U.S. House of Representatives might bring H.R. 2309 to the floor. Every letter carrier needs to call this number—888-863-6103—and tell their representative what this bill would mean for the future of the Postal Service if it became law. Members of Congress need to know that:
► H.R. 2309 would needlessly eliminate Saturday delivery, the USPS’ largest competitive advantage, to save a fraction of its annual operating budget. This senseless cut would damage millions of small businesses and result in major volume losses that have not been accounted for.
► H.R. 2309 would eliminate 90 percent of all door-to-door home and business delivery—a cut that is unpopular among the millions of Americans who currently receive such delivery. This change alone would hurt advertising mailers, small-business mailings, and eBay and Amazon deliveries, just to name a few—not to mention the inconvenience of having to leave a residence or place of business to retrieve mail from a cluster box location.
► H.R. 2309 would downsize the USPS’ invaluable networks by closing thousands of post offices and mail-processing plants in a haphazard manner, which would result in massive delays in mail processing and simply destroy the current USPS service standards that customers have come to rely on.
► Perhaps worst of all, H.R. 2309 would do nothing to reduce the crushing annual payments to pre-fund future retiree health benefits—payments that no other agency or business must make—despite the fact that the retiree health benefit fund already has nearly $45 billion in it, enough money to cover health care costs for future retirees for decades to come. As a matter of fact, the bill actually increases the congressionally mandated payments to the fund, which would all but guarantee a collapse of the Postal Service in the future.
We need to make sure every member of Congress receives this message loud and clear to ensure that H.R. 2309 never makes it to the floor. Please do your part to protect the future of the Postal Service by calling your representative at 888-863-6103 and by urging your co-workers, family members and friends to do the same.
In Solidarity, Fredric V. Rolando, President National Association of Letter Carriers

Bring Jobs Home? Senate Republicans Say No
| July 20, 2012
Republican senators "stood firm with Mitt Romney and his 1 percent lobbyist friends" when they successfully filibustered the Bring Jobs Home Act yesterday, says AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka. The bill would cut taxes for U.S. companies that bring jobs and business operations back to the United States and end tax loopholes that reward companies that ship jobs overseas.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
