The Audition
|
By Jennie Dorris Boston Magazine July, 2012
Mike Tetreault has spent an entire year preparing obsessively for this moment. He's put in 20-hour workdays, practiced endlessly, and shut down his personal ?life. Now the percussionist has 10 minutes to impress a Boston Symphony Orchestra selection committee. A single mistake and it's over. A flawless performance and he could join one of the world's most renowned orchestras.

Denver Police officer Celena Hollis remembered at Jazz in the Park
|
 | Denver Police officer Celena Hollis |
By Yesenia Robles
Denver Post, 7/2/2012
The Denver PostA week after Denver Police officer Celena Hollis was fatally shot just as the weekly summer jazz music concert ended at City Park, the music was rolling again, and people at the park said they felt a sense of peace.
"The atmosphere here feels the same, except everyone is more calm," said Lola Hurst, a Denver resident who went to Sunday's Jazz in the Park concert dedicated to Officer Hollis.
"It's an honor to be here, it makes you feel proud of the city," said Hurst's friend Linda Futrell. Purple ribbons - Hollis's favorite color - adorned every tree at the park, and others passed out smaller ones with pins for park-goers to wear as a show of support.

Andrew Litton plans to take Colorado Symphony Orchestra on tour, on CD
|
Posted: 06/25/2012 By John Wenzel The Denver Post Andrew Litton has embraced an ambitious course for his three-year tenure as "artistic adviser" of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. (St. Paul (Minn.) Pioneer Press) World-renowned conductor Andrew Litton plans to take the Colorado Symphony Orchestra on the road, record classical music albums and improve the acoustics at Boettcher Concert Hall during his three-year tenure as "artistic adviser." Symphony board chairman Jerry Kern formally introduced Litton, 53, at a news conference Monday at Boettcher, after which CSO president Gene Sobczak, orchestra concertmaster Yumi Hwang-Williams and Litton spoke. "I fell in love with this orchestra the first time I conducted it," Litton told about 100 CSO staff members, supporters and reporters. "The primary reason I'm here are the players in the orchestra." Alec Baldwin Gives $1 Million to the New York Philharmonic
|
Dave Itzkoff New York Times July 2, 2012
It is more generally the custom for a new bride and groom to get presents rather than to give them. But two days after Alec Baldwinand Hilaria Thomas were married at a star-studded and music-filled wedding in Manhattan, the New York Philharmonic said on Monday that it had received a gift of $1 million from Mr. Baldwin to honor Zarin Mehta, its outgoing president and executive director.
Mr. Baldwin, the actor and "30 Rock" star, is a member of the Philharmonic's board and the host of its radio show, "The New York Philharmonic This Week"; he is also an enthusiastic advocate for that orchestra, which he has plugged in the occasional Capital One credit card commercial.

Musicians' group calls in a mediator in Nero contract dispute
|
Peter Dobrin, Inquirer Classical Music Critic The Inquirer June 28, 2012
Saying it does not believe the Philly Pops can last without Peter Nero and an orderly passing of the baton to a successor, the local American Federation of Musicians is calling in a federal mediator in the dispute over Nero's contract.
The move to oust the 78-year-old Nero by Encore Series Inc. (ESI) "causes the union to have grave doubts about the continued viability of ESI and the Philly Pops," wrote union lawyer Michael N. Katz in a letter to ESI's lawyer. "It is our conclusion that neither ESI nor the Philly Pops can survive, over the course of the next year let alone the next 41/2 years of our recently negotiated collective bargaining agreement, in the absence of Mr. Nero and a carefully planned and mapped-out transition to a successor music director upon his retirement. 7:30 PM
Door Time: 6:00 PM
Red Rocks Amphitheatre
With special guest: Michael Martin Murphey
A benefit for the Denver Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®
Sponsored by Rocky Mountain PBS
BUY TICKETS
Blue Tulip Music, LLC proudly presents the John Adams Band for the first time ever at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. John Adams, together with his 12-piece band, will bring back the music of the Rocky Mountain legend, John Denver, while backed by the Colorado Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Richard Niezen.
John Adams performed a duet with John Denver in Europe of "Whispering Jesse." Not even a "far out" could express the experience they shared, followed by Denver saying "He sounds just like me." Both Johns shared stories with each other of their time in Beijing and the many other parts of the world music took them. The two agreed on recording plans, before Colorado lost her adopted son. The band each has their own connection to John Denver and as a musical family they evoke polar opposite of emotions from the audience through the music and stories that are shared from stage.
Come join the colorful state as they celebrate the 15th death anniversary of John Denver, the 20th anniversary of Denver Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, and John Adams' 40th anniversary of dedicating his life to what is now considered the best John Denver Tribute in the World!
This extravagant and poignant celebration will feature a memorable opening to the show to kick off the evening in the highest of fashion and excitement. Following in John Denver's footsteps, the concert is a benefit for the Denver Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®.
John Adams is the only John Denver tribute artist who travels with his own band as they perform the songs the way John Denver wrote and performed them and the way you remember them-- no cuts, no changes, and no tacky arrangements. Be sure to bring your friends, family, humor, and tissues as you engage in this magical, musical journey with Colorado's own, John Adams Band.
All ages are welcome.

Deja Blu - searching for Bass Player: vocals a +
|
Deja Blu is an established regional 5 piece dance band with a female lead singer. We are going into our 12th year of making music. All of us sing. We have a packed summer schedule filled with weddings, summer festivals and corporate events. While the money is very good, we are all mature, seasoned players who have full time jobs that are flexible and allow for some travel.
This is a part time job working for one of Colorado's premier dance bands. We average 40-50 shows/year. We work with a full time sound man, have a full time manager who takes care of the business end of things and we own our high end PA System with lights.
We are looking for a male with years of stage experience who is versatile, a very quick learner, has chops that can play a variety of music from Country, Top 40, Classic Rock, Jazz, Blues to Motown. We would love to find someone who can sing a bit.
You must have pro gear & attire (tux & suit), have reliable transportation for mountain travel. Have a cell phone & email account that you check often - it's how we communicate with our manager. Professional appearance is crucial.
Please, no free-lance or guys who play in multiple bands. Sorry, it won't work for us ~ it's just too hard to manage schedules. We all feel very blessed to be at this stage in our lives where we can continue to play with extremely talented musicians who we consider friends and play some very sweet gigs. Looking for like-minded bass players.
Please feel free to call Liz @ (303) 517-9852

Denver Classical Guitar Society - Meeting and Competition information
|
On behalf of the Denver Classical Guitar Society and the Board of Directors we wish to thank you for your support and patronage over the last 17 years. As you know the DCGS as a (501)(c)(3) is dissolving the end of the month and will no longer be sponsoring a concert season. That being said please note that Classical Guitar Concerts are available and sponsored by a number of other groups and venues in the greater metro area and we hope that you will attend and support these. Here are some suggestion for places to check through out the year for concerts: Lamont School of Music University of Denver, Meto State Music Dept, University of Colorado Boulder Music Dept., Lakewood Center for the Arts, Arvada Center and the Dairy Center in Boulder. Also google Classical Guitar Concerts in Denver and that should take you to sites that are offering events. We hope to see you at many of these venues.
Please note that our Monthly Meeting group has a new name, The Denver Guitar Workshop, and can be found at this address http//denverguitarworkshop.wordpress.com/ . This group will continue to meet at the South Broadway Christian Church at 23 Lincoln Street, Denver on the 3rd Tuesday of each month from 7 to 9 PM. This is the same group that has existed for the last 17 year.

Summer Course in the Alexander Technique at CU Boulder, 7/14
|
 | James Brody |
The 18th Annual Summer Course in the Alexander Technique at the University of Colorado at Boulder will be held July 9-13, 9:00 to noon daily. A one day Intensive will be held July 14, 1-5:00 pm. The 2012 faculty includes Ed Bilanchone, Amy Likar, and DMA member James Brody. Early registration by DMA members will result in a 15% reduction in tuition.
The Alexander Technique is a powerful tool for changing habits in movement and thinking. While anyone can benefit from this Technique, the work applies especially well to musicians and educators. Participants will learn about generalized and specific body use issues that can affect both performance and educational settings, as well as practical skills for the classroom. The results of a medical study in England that investigated the Alexander Technique were recently published in the British Medical Journal. A link to a summary of the study and a short film about it can be found at http://www.bmj.com/content/337/bmj.a884 For more information about the Course and the Alexander Technique in general, please consult the following web site: (http://music.colorado.edu/departments/wellness/) or contact DMA member James Brody (brody@colorado.edu).

Victory for Denver Janitors!
|
Late Friday night, after a huge rally in downtown Denver with community allies and days of phone calls to cleaning contractors, SEIU Local 105 reached a tentative agreement with the contractors. Yesterday, that contract was ratified by a unanimous vote. It includes the wage increases and healthcare increases that SEIU's janitors have worked so hard for both on the job and in the streets. There's no doubt that SEIU could never have achieved such a victory without the help of community and allied groups, including Jobs with Justice. Once again, we've seen that solidarity works to bring justice in the workplace and beyond. Thank you for all you did, and we'll see you at the next fight. In Solidarity, Joe Thomas, Organizer, Colorado Jobs with Justice |

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
