Did the Colorado Symphony Orchestra hire Andrew Litton to join its artistic leadership?

It's looking that way, though the CSO officially has "no comment" on the subject.

Here's what we know about the relationship between the orchestra and Litton, 53, a New York City native, who is one of the busiest conductors on the international scene these days:

The CSO sent out an e-mail Wednesday for a June 25 event in which the media was "cordially invited to meet the new artistic leadership of the orchestra."

No names were attached.

But the subject line of the e-mail  read: "You are invited to the Andrew Litton press conference."

House Recommends 10% Cut to NEA Funding Next Year
Americans for the Ars LogoToday, the U.S House of Representatives Appropriations Interior Subcommittee passed its initial FY 2013 funding legislation and proposed a cut of $14 million to the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). This budget proposal is disappointing. The arts community recognizes the challenges our elected leaders face in prioritizing federal resources, but funding for the NEA has already been cut by more than $20 million over the past two years, and this additional reduction is counterintuitive to the national call to help grow jobs and fuel the country's recovery. Americans for the Arts recently released the Arts and Economic Prosperity IV economic impact report, which provides overwhelming proof that the nonprofit arts industry generates $135.2 billion in economic activity every year and supports 4.13 million FTE jobs annually.

Please take two minutes to send a customizable message to your members of Congress to restore full NEA funding.
Jacksonville Symphony continues deficit, about $3 million in debt
The executive director vows efforts to 'make this work.'

Charlie Patton
Florida Times-Union
June 21, 2012

A clearly frustrated Jacksonville Symphony Association board reported
Thursday that despite a revenue increase of almost $650,000, the association
again lost money during the 2011-12 season.

With an operating budget of $8.6 million, symphony ran a deficit of $450,000
for the year. That means the symphony is now about $3 million in debt.

Because the symphony received about $984,000 from non-recurring major gifts
during the year, it could face a $1 million deficit next year if expenses
aren't significantly cut or revenues significantly increased, said Kay
Nichols, chairman of the finance committee.

Musicians want global action over airlines' treatment of instruments
Published Wednesday 20 June 2012 at 11:10 by Natalie Woolman
The Stage News

Musicians across the globe have launched a petition demanding European legislation be updated to ensure fair treatment for performers travelling on planes with their instruments.

The International Federation of Musicians (FIM) has launched the petition, which calls on European Union commissioner Siim Kallas to take musicians' concerns into account with regard to regulations on air passenger rights, which are currently under review.

As it stands, each airline can set their own policy about musical instruments. This lack of a uniform approach has caused problems for performers. In the UK, the Musicians' Union has long campaigned on the issue and supports the new petition.

MU general secretary John Smith, who is also president of FIM, said the issue needed to be tackled at both European and international level. He wants to see a standardised policy on instruments on planes similar to the one that already exists in the US.

He added: "Musicians need to know that, wherever they travel to and whoever they travel with, the same rules are going to apply. We therefore need to have international agreement on a reasonable policy for taking musical instruments on planes.

"We need uniformity and fairness across the whole sector. This has been an issue for a long time now - we've had members who have been allowed to take their instruments on [planes] as hand luggage on their flight out, only to be refused on the return journey and forced to put them in the hold at an extortionate cost, and we're often talking about delicate and valuable instruments here."

The petition is available at www.change.org

Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra Presents
Every month, MJO features two different high school jazz ensembles in concert at Dazzle! Playing the second and third Monday of each month (with some exceptions), the school plays one set followed by a set from MJO. The big finale includes both bands on stage featuring soloists from both groups. One of MJO's missions is to support jazz in the schools and this program, in our 6th year, continues to be wildly successful. Reservation ALWAYS recommended at Dazzle (303-839-5100). Great food, great atmosphere and always a great night of big band music! Check our website (MetropolitanJazzOrchestra.org) for our calendar and to confirm each month's schedule.

AUDITION & EMPLOYMENT NOTICES

Position: Pianist/with ability to lead and accompany vocalists

First Avenue Presbyterian Church is looking for an experienced musician to play worship hymns, a prelude, offertory and postlude and to accompany & lead a small choir (6 singers) in special music and Amen at our Summer 10:00 a.m. Worship Service.  During the Fall our worship hour is at 11:00 a.m.

If you play the organ that is a plus, but not a requirement at this time.  This is currently a subbing position with the possibility of becoming a weekly (Sunday Worship and Wednesday rehearsals) arrangement.

Currently the choir is meeting at 9:15 a.m. - 9:45 a.m. for warm-up/rehearsal prior to the Worship Service and does not meet for a mid week rehearsal.

In the fall the choral group meets on Wednesdays at 6:15 for an hour long rehearsal.  The time may vary depending on the musical selections.

Long term we are looking for someone with a range of musical styles who would feel comfortable playing traditional hymns and anthems, as well as more contemporary pieces.  This choir is a small group with hopes to gain new choral members.

Payment: To be negotiated.

Check us out at www.1stavepres.org
If you are a Christian who loves to lead worshipful music and teach choral music, please contact us at firstavepc@comcast.net 303-777-5325

Pride At Work convention this September
Pride At Work - the AFL-CIO constituency group for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) workers and allies - will be holding its triennial convention this September in Cleveland. Early-bird registration (only $125) has been extended through June 30 (afterward it goes up to $175). If you are interested in attending, you need to also be a member of Pride At Work (there are more than a dozen chapters nation-wide you can join, or become an at-large member if there's no local chapter). Visit http://prideatwork.org/join-pw/ to join P@W, and go to http://prideatwork.org/registration/ to register for the convention.

This convention will be a great opportunity for LGBTQ labor activists and allies to share stories and experiences, learn about local and national LGBTQ and labor struggles, and get practical organizing and bargaining tools. It's also a great way to encourage LGBTQ members to take on more leadership within your bargaining unit and local union. If there's someone(s) in your orchestra or local you think would benefit, please share this info with your committee and/or local leadership and consider finding a way to encourage them to attend.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
