In Memory - James Van Buren
| R.I.P. singer James Van Buren By Jon Solomon Westword Tue., Jun. 5 2012 at 9:00 AM Local jazz and blues vocalist James Van Buren passed away yesterday from cancer. He was 77. Mark Diamond, Paul Romaine, Doug Roche, Mark Klagstad -- who all played with Van Buren -- and Freddy Rodriguez Sr. and others were scheduled to perform tonight at a benefit show tonight at Cervantes' Masterpiece Ballroom for Van Buren's day-to-day living and medical expenses, but "things changed quickly, and our gathering June 5 at Cervantes' will now be a celebration of his life," Diamond wrote on Facebook. "Let's honor him for his contribution to music and his love and support of community." Read On

Colorado Symphony Orchestra rethinks programming, funding, everything
|
 | (Photo-illustration by Jeff Neumann, The Denver Post; photos: Jupiter Images) |
By Ray Mark Rinaldi The Denver Post June 10, 2012
When Jerry Kern decided to place his bet on the survival of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra he knew it was going to cost him. And it has: more than $125,000 from his own pocket since September, when he marched into the mess the organization had become.
But by most accounts he has won the wager. Kern's move led a communitywide round of giving and ticket buying that will leave the CSO in the black when its 2011-12 season ends today. That's a quick turnaround from last year's $1.3 million deficit - a failure that provoked a back-and-forth of blame between musicians and management and calls for bankruptcy from the board.
Just seven months ago, the CSO was poison - so toxic that 20 trustees made an angry and abrupt exit when a move to make players part-time failed. Now it is re-emerging as something everyone wants a taste of. Read On

Making Microtonal Music Using the 10-tone Equal Tempered System
|
 | Neil Haverstick |
Master Class By DMA Member Neil Haverstick DownBeat Magazine July, 2012 When I got a 19-tone electric guitar in 1989, courtesy of luthier John Starrett, it opened a door to a world that I had no idea existed. As I began studying the field of tunings in more depth, I was astonished at how little most musicians know about tuning-including our own 12-tone equal tempered system, which is how Western instruments are tuned today. When we learn to play, we aren't taught why these 12 equally spaced notes make up our standard system, and very few of us ever seem to inquire about it. Now, after more than two decades of studying 19, 31, 34 and 36-tone equal tempered scales, I've found that I am able to go to many new places as an artist and created unique concepts that have never been heard before. If you're looking for fresh ideas as a guitarist, you might want to think about moving beyond the usual 12-tone system - it isn't hard to do.

Release from the Glimmerglass Festival Orchestra Musicians
|
The Glimmerglass Festival Orchestra Musicians have been in negotiations with the new Management Team for our Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) which expired October 1, 2010. We have engaged in eleven negotiating sessions to date. We would like to inform the general public about some of the very serious challenges we are facing regarding extreme changes Management, (on behalf of the Board) wants to implement in key provisions of our CBA. The new Glimmerglass Management presented their opening proposal to the Orchestra's Union Negotiating Committee (NC) last August 2011. In an unprecedented and shocking move, Article IV.EE.1 was eliminated. This Article designates the number of players in the "permanent/core orchestra", i.e., the minimum personnel of the Orchestra. (This minimum is still subject to the instrumentations listed in the composers' original scores for a given Glimmerglass Festival season.) Of additional noteworthy importance, this minimum personnel list comprises our Collective Bargaining Unit. Management has insisted (for artistic control reasons, not for financial reasons) on substituting language in this Article to enable them to hire as many or as few players as they want without being subject to, and thus not respecting, the composer's score. Management has proposed equally distressing eliminations of other important sections of the CBA which offer our musicians protection and job security; some of these proposals include elimination of a Guaranteed Weekly Minimum Salary , limitations on access to Tenure, and reallocation of powers (to a management-designee) currently rendered by a Music Director (note: Glimmerglass Festival does not have current plans nor have they announced future plans to engage in a Music Director search to replace Maestro David Angus, who resigned from Glimmerglass in 2011). First Avenue Presbyterian Church is looking for an experienced musician to play worship hymns, a prelude, offertory and postlude and to accompany & lead a small choir (6 singers) in special music and Amen at our Summer 10:00 a.m. Worship Service. During the Fall our worship hour is at 11:00 a.m.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
