In Memory - Joann Six
| Musical Career of Joann Six
6-1-2012 Joann Six was one of Denver's best female vocalists on the night club scene from the 1950s through the 80s. A talented organist and singer, Joann had a refreshing style on the Hammond organ that combined lush chord voicings and walking base lines on the pedals. Referred to as a "diamond in the rough," Joann was known for her smoky voice on ballads, reminiscent of the big band era. Born in Jetmore, Kansas, Joann attended Hays State College from1950-1952, majoring in music. She played piano and sang alto in the choir. In 1952 Joann transferred to Colorado College in Colorado Springs to continue her studies. Joann bought a Hammond organ and played her first professional job at age 19 at Skateland roller skating rink in Manitou Springs. She also performed with bands such as The Star Dusters, and played dinner music at the NCO Club at Ent Air Force Base. In 1953 Joann moved back to Dodge City, Kansas. She played the Hammond on radio station KGNO during the evenings and worked at Dodge Music and Jewelry where she met Gene Six, musician and co-owner of the store. Joann and Gene were married on August 20, 1953 and settled in Colorado. With the church model Hammond, mobile home, four kids and collie dog, Joann and Gene created the "Gene Six Trio" (with Rick Steele, then Denny Dale on drums) and traveled border to border for several years. The Gene Six Trio performed as the house band in dinner and dance clubs in Colorado Springs such as the Broadmoor, House of Oscar, and Club Delmonico. The Sixes backed up stars including Nelson Eddy, The Ink Spots, The Modernaires, and the Van Dorn Sisters. In Denver, the Gene Six Trio performed at Henritze's, and Laffite's. "The trio presented an outstanding brand of dance music with an accent on 3-part vocals and clever arrangements," cited the Denver Post. Later, Joann was bandleader at the Club Lagoon for 8 years. In 1978, Joann joined Big Mac McCormack. The Mac III toured the western US, playing engagements at hotels and clubs, including Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe. The Denver Post called the Mac III "the world's smallest big band." When Big Mac passed away in 1985, Joann began working with Gene again on the bandstand, reinventing "The Sixes." They played at the Continental Denver, Mount Vernon Country Club, and many fraternal and private clubs throughout Colorado, Kansas, and Nebraska. The Sixes retired in 1994. Joann was a lifetime member of Denver Musicians Association. Jerry Krantz, the longtime owner of landmark Denver jazz club El Chapultepec, died Tuesday morning. He was 77.
In its heyday, El Chapultepec welcomed music legends such as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Ella Fitzgerald, as well as visiting rock stars like Paul McCartney and Mick Jagger. Krantz's insistence on free, live, straight-ahead jazz every night of the week helped the 'Pec - as insiders affectionately call it - stand out on the corner of 20th and Market Streets.
Even President Bill Clinton played his tenor sax on stage there.

Harpist Brings Calm to Patients, Families and Staff at Children's Colorado[]
| As one of the many incredible employees at our hospital, Barbara Lepke-Sims is the resident harpist at Children's Colorado. Barbara, M.M., certified music practitioner, MHTP, has been playing the harp for our patients for three years on behalf of the Department of Pastoral Care, directed by Bob Flory.
"I create a calm, relaxing environment for the patients," Barbara said. "The patient's part is just to relax and listen. This is something I can do that's helpful to the patients."
Playing soothing music to promote healing and decrease stress
Barbara travels from room to room, harp in tow, playing in some of the hospital's most high-stress environments. She most often plays in the neonatal intensive care unit (ICU), the pediatric ICU and the cardiac ICU, where patients are quite ill and often cannot engage with a music therapist (who utilize active music-making, as well as broader applications of music listening, for healing).
"In the hospital there are so many wonderful things happening for children. But the ICUs are mostly off-limits to them," Barbara recalls Bob once saying, as she explains that her "mission is to play for the patients at their bedside."

Behind Colorado Symphony's split from Debutante Ball

When the Colorado Symphony's board of trustees informed Denver Debutante Ball chairwoman Judy Grant on May 21 that the symphony was ending its association with this grandest of Denver society traditions, it sent shock waves through the city's old guard, igniting spirited exchange that led to much speculation.
Those involved with the ball wondered what could have prompted an orchestra that weathered one bankruptcy in 1989 and came very close to declaring another in 2011 to turn up its nose at what can best be described as "free money," an annual gift frequently in the six figures.
There is no single, or simple, answer.

Derryl spent 18 years as head of the Percussion Department at UNC, started the first Jazz Band and Jazz Festival, which is still so very popular every April in Greeley

As part of the collaborative series at Curious Theatre in 2011-2012, the Colorado Chamber Players presents The Tiger's Ear: Listening to Abstract Expressionist Painting - Bruce Adolphe's masterpiece for Flute, Oboe, Piano, Violin, Viola and Cello. The stunning sound portrait pays homage to Abstract Expressionist painters Clyfford Still, Jackson Pollack, Willem deKooning, Mark Rothko, Phillip Guston and Barnett Newman.
The Tiger's Ear will be performed just prior to Curious Theatre's play about Mark Rothko's life and work, Red. The music will be partnered with writings from The Tiger's Eye (the journal of art and poetry from the 1940s which inspired Adolphe), and Letters and writings about the painter. The Colorado Chamber Players will present this piece immediately preceding RED.
Performers will include Andrew Cooperstock, Piano; Paul Nagem, Flute; Lisa Martin, Oboe; Paul Primus, Violin; Barbara Hamilton, Viola; and Judith McIntyre, Cello - with readings by actor Mare Trevathan.
Tiger's Tale is funded by a 2010-11 SCFD Collaboration Grant from the Denver County Cultural Council Tier III.

Every month, MJO features two different high school jazz ensembles in concert at Dazzle! Playing the second and third Monday of each month (with some exceptions), the school plays one set followed by a set from MJO. The big finale includes both bands on stage featuring soloists from both groups. Become a Certified Music Practitioner
|
Have you ever wondered if there is meaning "beyond the notes?" Are you interested in helping people through a difficult time in their life? If you have answered yes, then you might want to consider becoming a "Certified Music Practitioner (CMP)". A CMP plays therapeutic music by the bedside for patients in healthcare settings. CMPs are trained by the Music For Healing and Transition Program (MHTP), which is a national organization that has been training amateur and professional musicians to play therapeutic music by the bedside for patients for over 15 years. In Denver, CMPS are being employed by various hospitals and other healthcare facilities. Denver area fall weekend classes are starting September September 22and 23, 2012. We'll be booking gigs for all genres, from classical to soul to salsa to rock to jazz. And every job will pay at least the appropriate local scale wages and benefits.
To participate, your act will need a solid, engaging profile. That means a well-written bio, at least one professional-grade photo, and either good audio or a decent video. These materials are easily submitted on the AFM Entertainment website.
 AFM Entertainment provides a new avenue for members to potentially get good-paying, union work. If you're the leader of an ensemble, band, or self-contained solo act (ex. guitarist) do not miss this opportunity.

Summer Course in the Alexander Technique at CU Boulder, 7/14

The 18th Annual Summer Course in the Alexander Technique at the University of Colorado at Boulder will be held July 9-13, 9:00 to noon daily. A one day Intensive will be held July 14, 1-5:00 pm. The 2012 faculty includes Ed Bilanchone, Amy Likar, and DMA member James Brody. Early registration by DMA members will result in a 15% reduction in tuition.
The Alexander Technique is a powerful tool for changing habits in movement and thinking. While anyone can benefit from this Technique, the work applies especially well to musicians and educators. Participants will learn about generalized and specific body use issues that can affect both performance and educational settings, as well as practical skills for the classroom. The results of a medical study in England that investigated the Alexander Technique were recently published in the British Medical Journal. National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) member Terence Flynn resigned over the weekend. An NLRB Inspector General's investigation found that Flynn funneled confidential information about NLRB activities to people working to undermine the NLRB, including Mitt Romney's former top labor advisor.

SAG-AFTRA Breakthrough in Music Video Negotiations
| Dancers and other music video performers have been fighting for a union contract to cover all their work on music videos and guarantee benefits, fair pay, safety, and other basic job protections. Recently, the major record labels met with dancers for contract negotiations, but the labels did not agree to many of the most basic contract standards for performers. On May 19, the National Board of SAG-AFTRA, the performers' union, met to consider instituting a Do Not Work Order for music videos.
SAG-AFTRA members' unity and resolve to do whatever it takes to win dignity in the workplace paid off. On the eve of the National Board's consideration of a Do Not Work Order, the labels offered to begin immediate discussions to resolve the toughest issues prior to their upcoming face-to-face negotiations May 30th and 31st. The newly merged entertainment union believes this movement signals the label's willingness to try to negotiate a fair union contract by the 31st.
"This is a huge step in the right direction and a step towards our ultimate victory," SAG-AFTRA released in a statement. "It's proof that if we continue to stick together and support each other, we can achieve our milestone of a music video contract."

Comprised of some Metropolitan State College students and community members, the band under the direction of Gerald Endsley meets on Tuesday evenings from 7-9 P.M. in the King Center Concert Hall on the Auraria campus. All wind and percussion instruements are welcome and there are no fees, auditions, or chair placements. The band generaly shares two concerts per semester with other metro ensembles. Community Band Seeking New Members (Edgewater/Lakewood)

Our non-profit Mile High Community Band seeks musicians of all ages, teen through adult, and at all levels of accomplishment, to join us for rehearsals on Thursday nights in Edgewater (just west of Denver).
Our organization's mission is to provide rewarding music education and performance opportunities for youth and adults at all skill levels. We have various bands for different skill levels, beginning through advanced, including jazz/blues and concert bands. In particular, we welcome additional brass and woodwind musicians.
We meet Thursday evenings at North High School (2960 Speer Blvd Denver) for rehearsals. Monthly memberships begin at $25-$35/month, but we can waive fees and provide instruments for those who need them - no one with an interest in playing music will be turned away. Family discounts also available.

1876 Prague Cello - 4/4 Violincello on rare 'small' pattern
Description: Small pattern full-size cello. The back is two-piece maple, semi-slab cut with faint figure in the lower half. The ribs are similar the back with rather more curl and figure. The top is of spruce, two pieces, with rather wide, irregular grain widening away from the middle. The neck and pegbox are original crowned by a rather large volute. The varnish is reddish-brown
in color. Despite the presence of several well-mended cracks, the condition of the cello is good.

Mechanism: 18% nickel silver keys with silver plating. Full German system with High D and E keys. Ring key for wing joint third finger hole. Right hand whisper lock. Rollers on F, Ab, Eb, Db, right thumb Bb and F#, in combination with a crowned E key. Bb Guard. Metal tubes extending into the bore in the finger holes of the wing and boot joints to prevent water from entering the tone holes. All posts are set with epoxy and spring posts are locked with screws.
Body: Red Maple, selected for tone quality, naturally aged in our own facilities. Natural rubber linings in the wing joint and small bore of the boot joint. French bell (metal ring). Body Lock. Complete re-pad and service done by Fox summer 2010. Accessories:Fine plush-lined case (original).

A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!
