Met Reverses Itself on Reviews Ban by Opera News
|
By Daniel J. Wakin,
May 22, 2012, N.Y.Times The Metropolitan Opera on Tuesday backed away from its decision to bar reviews of its productions in Opera News, its affiliated magazine and the leading opera publication in the country. The Met said an "outpouring of reaction" from opera fans on the Internet caused it to change course a day after The New York Times reported that Met officials and the publishers of Opera News had decided to stop reviewing Met shows. "I think I made a mistake," said Peter Gelb, the Met's general manager. "The Metropolitan Opera only exists with the good will of the public. Clearly the public would miss Opera News not being able to review the Met, and we are responding to that," he added, referring to a "groundswell of disappointment."

AFM Prevails in Musical Arts Association v. NLRB
| Court of Appeals Rules in AFM's Favor in Cleveland Orchestra's Musical Arts Association v. NLRB (New York) The United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit has today affirmed a July 2011 National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) decision finding that the American Federation of Musicians and AFM Local 4 (Cleveland, OH)-parent and local-are joint collective bargaining representatives for the Cleveland Orchestra, and that the Musical Arts Association (MAA), which operates the Cleveland Orchestra violated Federal Labor law by refusing to bargain with the AFM over media issues. The Court rejected MAA's contention that two or more unions may not serve as joint collective-bargaining representatives for a single unit of employees, stating that those representatives can divide-either expressly or in practice-their bargaining duties in order to accommodate local and national interests. City Opera may have secured its immediate future. But does it matter?
| By Justin Davidson New York Magazine May 20, 2012
Two decades ago, New York City Opera was literally dying. Signs backstage announced the nearly constant roll call of company members lost to aids. I remember the night in 1995 when artistic director Christopher Keene, 48 and frail, conducted a messy but heroic performance of Hindemith's Mathis der Maler, about an artist soldiering on through catastrophic times. A few weeks later, Keene was dead. The company he left behind was decimated by disease and low morale, yet within a year or two it rose briskly from the grave.
Now it looks like austerity might do what aids never got close to accomplishing: make City Opera cease to matter. It's physically painful to write this: The company is the pet hamster of the music world; nobody wants it to come to a bad end. Perhaps it won't. The budget is balanced, the unions placated, venues have been lined up for the next three years, and tickets are wonderfully affordable. But City Opera is artistically adrift. This year, with no music director and a thinned-down ensemble, it mounted two so-so stagings of standard works, a prematurely fusty new piece, and a thin, sporadically engaging staging of an obscure, sporadically engaging eighteenth-century opera. Only a Mets fan would call this a comeback. Read On

A new Guitar enthusiast club - the Denver Guitar Group!
|
As you may have heard, the Denver Classical Guitar Society is being dissolved. June will be the final meeting of DCGS. And while the 3rd Tuesday group will continue to meet, a few of the former DCGS members decided it was time to start a new group. We figured Denver is plenty big enough for a second group, and this was a perfect time for a fresh start!
The Denver Guitar Group is a club of guitar and stringed instrument enthusiasts as a place to meet, perform, and get to know other musicians. The meeting is open to anyone. If you play guitar (classical, folk fingerstyle, jazz, etc.), mandolin, ukulele, or any other stringed instrument, we'd love to have you. While the current members play classical guitar, the meeting is open.
Meetings will be held on the first Monday of every month, starting June 4th, and the University Park United Methodist Church in the West Fellowship hall. 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.
For more details check us out on Facebook - Denver Guitar Group

Summer Course in the Alexander Technique at CU Boulder, 7/14
|
 | James Brody |
The 18th Annual Summer Course in the Alexander Technique at the University of Colorado at Boulder will be held July 9-13, 9:00 to noon daily. A one day Intensive will be held July 14, 1-5:00 pm. The 2012 faculty includes Ed Bilanchone, Amy Likar, and DMA member James Brody. Early registration by DMA members will result in a 15% reduction in tuition.
The Alexander Technique is a powerful tool for changing habits in movement and thinking. While anyone can benefit from this Technique, the work applies especially well to musicians and educators. Participants will learn about generalized and specific body use issues that can affect both performance and educational settings, as well as practical skills for the classroom. The results of a medical study in England that investigated the Alexander Technique were recently published in the British Medical Journal. A link to a summary of the study and a short film about it can be found at http://www.bmj.com/content/337/bmj.a884 For more information about the Course and the Alexander Technique in general, please consult the following web site: (http://music.colorado.edu/departments/wellness/) or contact DMA member James Brody (brody@colorado.edu).

March in Denver - Tuesday, May 29th!
| Bring your strollers, your whistles, your friends, your family and ... Help build a fair economy with a strong middle class JOIN THE 99% AS WE MARCH ON WELLS FARGO When companies like Wells Fargo don't pay their fair share, we all lose. Colorado families have watched the economic crisis unfold in our backyards, leaving our children's schools underfunded, forcing our neighbors' homes into foreclosure, jeopardizing critical public services, and eroding the strength of the middle class. Meanwhile, big corporations such as Wells Fargo have flooded our legislative process with corporate dollars to protect corporate interests. Over the last four years, Wells Fargo's federal income tax rate was just 3.8 percent-less than what nurses, firefighters, teachers and janitors pay-despite making some $69.1 billion in profit. If Wells Fargo had paid its fair share in federal taxes, Colorado would have received an extra $53 million-money to hire hundreds of teachers, nurses and firefighters. Help send a powerful message to the wealthiest 1%: Pay your taxes. Do your fair share. WHERE: March begins at the Colorado Convention Center, goes to 17th and Sherman, and returns to the Convention Center. WHEN: Tuesday, May 29, at 7;45 a.m. (event concludes by 9:45 a.m.) WHO: Coalition of faith, progressive, labor and immigrant rights groups. WHAT: Flash mob, rally and march along three routes in the heart of downtown Denver. For more information, call Kate Stigberg, Colorado AFL-CIO, 303-433-2100 ext. 5615 or e-mail kstigberg@coaflcio.org

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
