CSO (cue drumroll) is back in the black
 Posted: 02/02/2012
By Ray Mark Rinaldi
The Denver Post

Three months after it went into a financial tailspin that ended with 20 board members resigning in a huff, the Colorado Symphony Orchestra says it  has returned to solid ground.

The CSO will end its season this spring in the black, according to its administrative chief Gene Sobczak, a vast turnaround from the year before when the budget deficit  exceeded $647,000.

"Our projections are sound," Sobcek said, "And we are going to meet them."

Sobczak sat down for a wide-ranging talk Tuesday, marking the first 100 days of the CSO's efforts to regroup. It has been a busy period for the organization: it has two new board co-chairs, Jerome and Mary Kern, along with 10 new community members. It has a new CEO in Sobczak, who left his position leading the Arvada Center to take over operations. It has a new, flexible  labor contract that was approved by 95 percent of the musicians.

The 100 days were a little painful. The CSO canceled 10 of its concerts to save money. But there was also a bit of experimentation: Last week, the symphony borrowed a trick from department store practices and held a  "72-hour    sale" on tickets.

Sobczak said  cuts helped it make its bottom line, but he also credited community support. Not only did foundations and individuals send in money, he said, but donations came from unexpected places -  a 9-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl held their own fundraisers sending in a total of $190.

Loupassi would bar jobless benefits for orchestras
By: Wesley P. Hester |
Richmond Times Dispatch
January 23, 2012

Del. G. Manoli Loupassi, R-Richmond, is sponsoring legislation that would deny active symphony orchestra performers unemployment benefits between orchestra seasons.

House Bill 1254 would make symphony performers between orchestra seasons ineligible for unemployment between orchestra seasons if they performed during the last season and plan to perform in the upcoming season.

Loupassi said Monday that he introduced the legislation after being alerted to the fact that many performers in the state were collecting unemployment each year.

"They're not unemployed. They know they're coming back. They always come back," Loupassi said. "They just have a job that's seasonal. Baseball players don't get to collect unemployment in the off season."

Brook Schoenwald, Basil Vendryes
& Ann Marie Liss
ENGLEWOOD ARTS PRESENTS  continues its Chamber Music of the Masters series with a recital by Duo Esprit.  Colorado Symphony principal violist Basil Vendryes and harpist Ann Marie Liss are the founding members of the Duo and will be joined by CSO principal flutist Brook Schoenwald on some of the program selections.

Founded out of mutual admiration of their talents as both instrumentalists and artists, Ms. Liss and Mr. Vendryes came together to explore the repertoire for this unusual combination.  Duo Esprit has commissioned works by Lamont School of Music professor Christopher Malloy, distinguished New York composer David Tcimpidis, Italian composer Andrea Ferrante and others.  This season includes premieres of new works for the ensemble by Conrad Kehn, Jeffrey Harrington and Ricardo Iznaola. It is Duo Esprit's hope to bring the unified voice of the harp and viola to audiences on a regular basis. The 2012 concert season includes performances on the concert series at the Lamont School of Music, Bethany Lutheran and Englewood Arts Presents, Casper College, the University of Wyoming, and other concerts in the greater Denver metro area.

The widely varied program will include works by Arnold Bax (w/flute), Andrea Ferrante, Ricardo Iznaola, David Tcimpidis, Frederic Chopin, George Gershwin, Frank Bridge, and Claude Debussy (w/flute).

And for the romantically inclined the title track, A Breath Away from Heaven with yours truly writing a poem for Joe Zalwinul's great tune, A Remark You Made is memorable; a great union of poetry and jazz; and the story's a dream come true.
Really cool!!

Our work is not for the faint of heart.  It's for those who truly listen, feel, and appreciate fine art.  That's why we've chosen you as our target market.  You listen, feel, and appreciate fine art.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
