More Anti-Union Rhetoric from the League of American Orchestras
By Pete Vriesenga

LAO CartoonThe League of American Orchestras (LAO), formerly known as the American Symphony Orchestra League (ASOL) has ramped-up their anti-collective bargaining rhetoric lately. LAO's latest publication: Fearless Journeys: Innovation in Five American Orchestras is yet another in a string of "new model" discussions that champion this message. The book claims to provide "hard evidence" through a small sample study that orchestras can become more "sustainable" by taking risks and modifying their collective bargaining agreements. Of course there is no mention of the established alternative where the fundamental right to bargain is expressly prohibited as the organization wanders aimlessly to the public trough only to reward their administrators.

LAO vice president Bruce Clinton recently made headlines here in Denver while forcing this very agenda on the CSO and it was a only a stroke of luck that he resigned from the CSO board before succeeding in his hope and efforts to shut the orchestra down. In his 10/7/11 interview on Colorado Public Radio, LAO President and CEO Jesse Rosen provides cover for Clinton while displaying his own ignorance of the facts through his comments: "The disappointment that I feel about it is that there is so much really important work for orchestras to be doing; to continue to innovate, to continue to grow, to deepen their connections to the community. What we see in Colorado, unfortunately, is a group of constituents who have yet to align themselves around a shared set of vision and direction."

Please give yourself a pat on the back for funding LAO's self-serving, anti-union agenda. LAO was recently awarded a $100,000 NEA grant to "strengthen orchestras through learning and leadership development" while focusing on "best-practice models" at their annual conference.

The bulk of LAO's funding comes through membership dues that range from $150 to $29,120 annually. Dues are typically collected as a line-item expense from orchestra budgets without consent or knowledge of members of the orchestra. If union dues were collected in this manner I'd be writing this column from prison.

The LAO made headlines again in a January 4 story in the Oregonian reporting on why the Oregon Symphony dropped their LAO membership. "I find the on-going discussion around the need for a "new model" dispiriting" said Oregon Symphony President Elaine Calder. "At an annual cost of $17,000, the benefits of membership were not worth the expense." The cost of an LAO membership ranges from $150 to $29,120 annually through a dues structure that places the highest burden on mid-size orchestras.

For many of the same reasons the Youth Orchestras of the Rockies (YOR) recently opted not to renew their LAO membership after their board reviewed the matter. Commenting further on this decision, DMA Vice President and YOR Music Director Thomas Blomster said "The YOR Board of Directors asked what we were getting by being members of the LAO, as most of the Board didn't even know who or what the LAO is. I responded that we get the privilege of using the LAO's logo on our website and programs, and the LAO clogs our email boxes with information that is of very little use. All this for a membership of $150 a year, not very much money, but $150 the YOR Board felt could be better spent."

Cleveland Orchestra's 2012 Miami Residency:
Roots in Miami culture growing deeper

January 21, 2012
By Zachary Lewis, The Plain Dealer

Ten years ago, if someone had said the Cleveland Orchestra would soon have a quasi-permanent foothold in Miami, most people would have said he was crazy.

Today, that same person would be spot-on correct.

More than correct, actually. For today, on the brink of its 2012 Miami residency, what the orchestra has in South Florida isn't so much a foothold as it is a full-fledged second home, a solid artistic dwelling with a firm foundation and a structure already due for expansion.

"The Cleveland Orchestra has gotten in on the ground floor," said Bruce Coppock, the former cellist who replaced Sandi Macdonald last summer as director of the Miami residency.

Phoenix Symphony conductor Michael Christie moving on

Jan. 19, 2012
Arizona Republic News

Michael Christie, the Phoenix Symphony conductor who has seen both artistic heights and financial crises in his eight years here, has been named music director of the Minnesota Opera.

Christie will begin his new position in the 2012-13 season, taking on full duties the following year. He will continue in Phoenix for one more season and step down when his contract expires in June 2013.

During Christie's tenure, the orchestra has tightened its ensemble, played much new music and widened its scope, including regular performances providing live music for Ballet Arizona.

He also watched as the symphony's budget shrank from $12 million to its current $8.5 million after the financial meltdown of 2008.

ENGLEWOOD ARTS PRESENTS  continues its Chamber Music of the Masters series with a recital by Duo Esprit.  Colorado Symphony principal violist Basil Vendryes and harpist Ann Marie Liss are the founding members of the Duo and will be joined by CSO principal flutist Brook Schoenwald on some of the program selections.

It is Duo Esprit's hope to bring the unified voice of the harp and viola to audiences on a regular basis. The 2012 concert season includes performances on the concert series at the Lamont School of Music, Bethany Lutheran and Englewood Arts Presents, Casper College, the University of Wyoming, and other concerts in the greater Denver metro area.

Book Recommendation: "Another Nightmare Gig from Hell"
Hey folks...Nick Zelinger, along with Tammy Brackett, has just published a new book, "Another Nightmare Gig from Hell," which is a collection of true stories, from musicians, about some of their worst/strangest gigs. It's a hoot, very well written and organized, and is the book that many of us have thought should be printed for some years. Actually, you could fill a bookstore with such stories, and I believe Vol 2 is being considered. Yes, I have a story in there as well, and I wouldn't be surprised if you don't believe it...but, it happened, as did all of these little gems. It's available from Amazon, or www.nightmaregig.com. For a fun read, and a look at what musicians go through as they try to pursue their art, check this out, you won't be sorry you did...best..Stickman   www.microstick.net

President Obama: Hold Big Banks and Mortgage Fraudsters Accountable
1/24/12

Sometime very soon, President Obama has a decision to make. The consequences will impact the lives of millions of underwater homeowners and the future of our economy.

Settlement talks with the Big Banks that caused our mortgage crisis are ongoing. And the Obama administration is a big part of those talks. The President and administration officials can either let Big Banks and mortgage fraudsters off the hook with a slap on the wrist-or push for real accountability.

*Sign our petition to President Obama urging him to side with working families [ http://act.aflcio.org/c/18/p/dia/action3/common/public/?action_KEY=3455 ].*

*Big Banks and mortgage fraudsters have a lot to answer for.* They abused and defrauded consumers-and their greed and recklessness caused a devastating financial crisis. There are 7.5 million homes that have entered the foreclosure process, with another 4.8 million homeowners at risk.

*Now, it's time to set things right.* The Obama administration should reject any weak settlement that amounts to a slap on the wrist for bankers and fraudsters and push for a robust settlement that provides relief to millions of underwater homeowners.

*Tell President Obama: It's critical that the Department of Justice lead a comprehensive investigation. We need you to fight to hold Big Banks and mortgage fraudsters accountable and keep millions of Americans in their homes .

State Attorneys General from coast to coast have been investigating bank fraud. And a group of them-including New York's Eric Schneiderman and Delaware's Beau Biden-have stood up for working families by working for a robust settlement that provides real accountability and has the potential to keep millions of underwater Americans in their homes.

This work must not be undermined by a premature and inadequate settlement. Wrongdoing was committed on a massive scale. That's why it's time for the Obama administration and the Justice Department to lead a full investigation-and work with the bravest state Attorneys General like Schneiderman and Biden to fight for real accountability and a tough settlement.
*
Tell President Obama: We need a settlement strong enough to ensure that this never happens again [ http://act.aflcio.org/c/18/p/dia/action3/common/public/?action_KEY=3455 ].*

A key to getting our economy moving again is providing relief to underwater homeowners and making sure this kind of abuse never happens again. President Obama has to get this right. Let's help him do the right thing.

Thank you for all the work you do.

In Solidarity,

Richard L. Trumka

More Lockouts as Companies Battle Unions
By STEVEN GREENHOUSE
NY Times
Published: January 22, 2012

From the Cooper Tire factory in Findlay, Ohio, to a country club in Southern California and sugar beet processing plants in North Dakota, employers are turning to lockouts to press their unionized workers to grant concessions after contract negotiations deadlock. Even the New York City Opera locked out its orchestra and singers for more than a week before settling the dispute last Wednesday.

Young Workers Want to Hear from YOU
Jan. 23, 2012

The AFL-CIO Young Worker Advisory Council wants to hear from you on how the AFL-CIO should best meet the needs of young workers.
Read On
Cooper Tire doesn't want to hear from you

Seven hours. Cooper Tire blocked our emails just seven hours after we began protesting its lockout!

Well, Cooper may have had enough, but we haven't. We'll make sure every message written to Cooper Tire is personally delivered to the company.

More than 12,000 activists have already told Cooper to end the lockout, but that's not enough to ensure the company knows we're not backing down and the public is against them. Help us reach our goal of 20,000 supporters against the lockout - WRITE COOPER TODAY!

It's clear now that Cooper thinks it can get away with ignoring its workers and its customers, so we've got to keep up the pressure on the company. There are 1,050 workers in Findlay, Ohio, who haven't been allowed to work since November 28. And they're counting on us to help them get back on the job.

The ongoing lockout has been devastating to workers like Shane Hanley who explains: "It's tough. It's a hardship. Especially when you've got bills to pay."1 Teresa Brown, who has worked at the plant for more than 12 years along with her husband, agrees, "We have a kid in college, and I don't know how I am going to pay for college - all because they want to be greedy. They are just trying to bully us."2

Around the country, people are fighting back against corporate greed and standing up for the 99%. Will you stand up and fight for Cooper's workers too?

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
