Mopping up after having been "showered upon"
Bruce and Martha Clinton
Bruce and Martha Clinton
By Pete Vriesenga

"Bruce and his wife, Martha, have made a tremendous difference in the many organizations in which they are closely involved, including the symphony orchestras in the three cities in which they maintain homes: Chicago, Denver, and Miami. Their generosity has been showered upon the Colorado Symphony Orchestra here in Denver, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, The Cleveland Orchestra for their Miami Residency, the New World Symphony and, of course, the League of American Orchestras."

The above quote comes from a page of the League of American Orchestras website, highlighting a 2008 LAO dinner honoring former CSO board members Bruce and Martha Clinton. Interestingly, the referenced page is no longer available because it is quickly masked by a pop-up ad.

This draws a stark contrast to the Clinton's deliberate attempts to shut the CSO down only months ago, and subsequent and continued efforts to undermine the organization for months after they walked away from their responsibilities.  The Clinton's also reneged on their season pledges over their differences with "union work rules," leaving a sudden and deliberate financial crisis for musicians and community leaders to mop up.

As vice president of the LAO, Bruce Clinton has taken his agenda across the nation. A report on their June, 2011 LAO Conference blames "collective bargaining agreements" for much of the industry problems that orchestras face today. As if this were nothing more than a game of Monopoly or Who Sank my Battleship, the report goes on to script the turmoil that CSO musicians were expected to endure in the immediate months ahead:

"Next few months some major and medium US orchestras will face the challenges of robust innovation. It will be a really interesting experience, which orchestras will succeed best in this competition."
Ringing Finally Ended, but There's No Button to Stop Shame
By DANIEL J. WAKINPublished: January 12, 2012

The unmistakably jarring sound of an iPhone marimba ring interrupted the soft and spiritual final measures of Mahler's Symphony No. 9 at the New York Philharmonic on Tuesday night. The conductor, Alan Gilbert, did something almost unheard-of in a concert hall: He stopped the performance. But the ringing kept on going, prompting increasingly angry shouts in the audience directed at the malefactor.

After words from Mr. Gilbert, and what seemed like weeks, the cellphone owner finally silenced his device. After the audience cheered, the concert resumed. Internet vitriol ensued.

Rights in the Workplace

 NY Times
Published: January 14, 2012

As a condition of getting and keeping their jobs, millions of employees in the United States have signed agreements to take any disputes with their employers to arbitration rather than court. Typically, the agreements also prohibit the arbitrator from consolidating similar claims.

Why employers like the agreements should be obvious: they pre-empt court challenges on workplace disputes and make it harder for employees to join forces to demand better treatment. As for why employees sign, they have no choice: their jobs require it.

The good news is that this is not the end of the story.

Letters from Mozart
Fri, Jan 20, 7:30 PM - tickets

Resident Conductor Scott O'Neil leads us through Mozart's incredible life while reading sparkling translations of letters he wrote to family and friends accompanied by his most famous compositions. What was Mozart really like? Here is the composer at his most intimate and unguarded, expressing feelings about life, love, music and the world around him. This journey of discovery is a must for anyone who has ever loved a work by Mozart, from the deceptively simple "Eine kleine Nachtmusik" to his towering, magnificent Requiem.

Magnificent Mozart
Mozart's Magnificent Voyage
Sun, Jan 22, 2:30 PM - tickets

This popular newcomer in the Classical Kids series features Mozart's young son, Karl, who longs to be taken from his boarding school to spend more time with his famous father. An old travelling trunk serves as a magic chest that reveals an incredible journey back in time to Mozart's childhood and into the fantastic world of Mozart's great opera The Magic Flute. Along the way, Karl comes to understand Mozart's extraordinary life as a travelling prodigy, his pressures from family and fame, his passion for composing, and the common bonds they both share.

Brook Schoenwald, Basil Vendryes & Ann Marie Liss
Brook Schoenwald, Basil Vendryes
& Ann Marie Liss
ENGLEWOOD ARTS PRESENTS  continues its Chamber Music of the Masters series with a recital by Duo Esprit.  Colorado Symphony principal violist Basil Vendryes and harpist Ann Marie Liss are the founding members of the Duo and will be joined by CSO principal flutist Brook Schoenwald on some of the program selections.

Founded out of mutual admiration of their talents as both instrumentalists and artists, Ms. Liss and Mr. Vendryes came together to explore the repertoire for this unusual combination.  Duo Esprit has commissioned works by Lamont School of Music professor Christopher Malloy, distinguished New York composer David Tcimpidis, Italian composer Andrea Ferrante and others.  This season includes premieres of new works for the ensemble by Conrad Kehn, Jeffrey Harrington and Ricardo Iznaola. It is Duo Esprit's hope to bring the unified voice of the harp and viola to audiences on a regular basis. The 2012 concert season includes performances on the concert series at the Lamont School of Music, Bethany Lutheran and Englewood Arts Presents, Casper College, the University of Wyoming, and other concerts in the greater Denver metro area.

The widely varied program will include works by Arnold Bax (w/flute), Andrea Ferrante, Ricardo Iznaola, David Tcimpidis, Frederic Chopin, George Gershwin, Frank Bridge, and Claude Debussy (w/flute).

Stand Up for Cooper Tire Workers!

Fight back against Cooper Tire's flat-out greed!

http://act.americanrightsatwork.org/salsa/track.jsp?v=2&c=jozxo65Qz/ATjf93DYejgNK5TEAeETkR

Tell Cooper to end the lockout!

Another classic tale of corporate greed is unfolding in Ohio, and we need your help to put a stop to it.

In 2008, when Cooper Tire & Rubber Company was losing money, workers at its Findlay, Ohio, plant gave up $31 million in pay and benefits to help the company stay afloat.

Thanks to the workers' sacrifices and productivity, Cooper has made more than $300 million in profits since 2009. Cooper paid its executives millions of dollars in bonuses and bought a new corporate jet. What did its employees get? Locked out on Thanksgiving weekend.

Despite soaring profits, Cooper pushed a new contract on its employees with higher healthcare premiums and undisclosed wage terms. Do you think CEOs would accept a contract if they didn't know if they were getting a raise or a pay cut? Not a chance.

Still, Cooper's employees were more than willing to keep working through negotiations to reach a fair deal after their contract expired last fall. But Cooper refused to budge - leaving 1,050 workers out in the cold since November 28.

The workers in Findlay, Ohio, are counting on you! Email Cooper Tire NOW!

Cooper can easily afford to set things straight and still turn a profit. Cooper CEO Roy Armes received $4.7 million in compensation in 2010.1 And the company has purchased a plant in Serbia for $17.3 million!2

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
