DENVER COLISEUM TURNS 60, 1/10
Denver ColiseumDenver celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Denver Coliseum on January 10, 2012, marking six decades of an extraordinary variety of entertainment and history. Owned by the people of the City and County of Denver, the Coliseum is an iconic structure in our ever-changing city.

In 1949, the newly-appointed Mayor Quigg Newton appointed a committee of citizens to develop plans for the structure. It was built for $3 million by the City of Denver in under two years, with a dedication themed "Salute to Soil", on January 10, 1952, with lavish pageantry and fanfare, including a Hollywood starlet and national media.

Employment office rules orchestra musicians have been on strike, must pay back benefits
Written by Elizabeth Dramer
The Courier-Journal
January 6, 2012

Any Louisville Orchestra musician who received unemployment benefits since June 26 must repay the money, following a ruling by the state's Office of Employment and Training that the musicians were not locked out but were actually on strike.

Fifty-five orchestra musicians had filed for unemployment benefits but the orchestra filed a claim with the state office last June contending that the musicians were refusing to work without a contract, which constituted a strike. Orchestra officials testified before a referee from the office last fall.

According to the ruling, the musicians' unemployment benefits will now cease.

Oregon Symphony drops membership in League of American Orchestras
January 04, 2012
By David Stabler, The Oregonian

The Oregon Symphony has dropped its membership in the League of American Orchestras, said Elaine Calder, the orchestra's president. At an annual cost of $17,000, the benefits of membership were not worth the expense, she said.

It's another example of an orchestra cutting expenses because of decreasing revenue from ticket sales and donations. In recent years, the Oregon Symphony has trimmed staff, reduced the number of musicians and cut salaries in order to balance its budget.

Mediation Ends As Opera Management Slashes Number of Performances, Imposes Draconian Cuts to Compensation for Musicians and Singers, Departs Acoustically-Superior Lincoln Center Theater and Turns Distinguished Company Into Itinerant Freelancers

New York City-Saturday, January 7, 2012 - At 9 p.m. on Saturday, January 7th, New York City Opera management rejected the final wage concession offered by Local 802, American Federation of Musicians. The company told the mediators and the unions' negotiating committees that all employees will be locked out of work on Monday.

A three-week mediation effort conducted by the Federal Mediation & Conciliation Service centered on New York City Opera General Manager George Steel's plan to dismantle the esteemed 68-year-old professional company and replace it with ad-hoc freelance musicians and performers. The proposals made to the unions would eliminate dozens of jobs andreduce the annual compensation of the remaining orchestra and singers from approximately $40,000 per year to $4,000 - cuts totaling 90%. By contrast, Steel's annual compensation of over $324,000 plus benefits would far outstrip the pay of the entire orchestra.

NLRB Affirms Orchestra Members as Employees, not Independent Contractors
AFM Press Release
December 29, 2011

After a more than four-year wait, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has ruled in favor of the American Federation of Musicians (AFM) and affiliated Locals 294 (Lancaster, PA), 72-147 (Dallas-Fort Worth, TX), and 9-535 (Boston, MA) in determining that the musicians of the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra are statutory employees, not independent contractors. The two-to-one decision announced December 27, 2011, is a reversal of the regional NLRB's 2007 ruling to dismiss the orchestra's union election petition, and clears the way for the orchestra to vote on union representation.

In two unpublished decisions issued today, the NLRB also followed the Lancaster Orchestra decision and ruled that the musicians of the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra and Plano Symphony Orchestra are employees.

"These are resounding victories for the AFM, the union movement, and for professional musicians around the country," says AFM President Ray Hair. "The NLRB saw through management attempts to block unionization by forcing musicians, as a condition of their employment, to acknowledge themselves as independent contactors - the same employment status as household maids," Hair said. "Professional musicians are immensely talented, highly specialized employees who deserve the right to bargain collectively with their true employers for fair compensation, benefits and acceptable working conditions."

According to an NLRB announcement yesterday, the board examined numerous factors and found they weighed heavily in favor of employee status and the right to negotiate, noting that orchestra management sets work hours, payment schedules, dress codes, standards for behavior, and conditions for discipline, among other things.

Obama Names Three to NLRB
Jan. 5, 2012

In a move to overcome Senate Republican obstruction tactics that have stalled hundreds of vital nominations, President Obama used recess appointments to name three new members to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). Republicans had vowed to block NLRB nominees to keep the board from functioning. After Jan. 1, the NLRB had just two current members, and without new appointees, it would not have been able to carry out most business.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
