News: Barry Fey, Harry Tuft heading to the Colorado Museum Hall of Fame
By Ricardo Baca | December 15th, 2011
Denver Post

The Colorado Music Hall of Fame announced its next two inductees this morning, and storied rock promoter Barry Fey and legendary acoustic music champion Harry Tuft will make up the hall's second class.

Fey and Tuft lead very different careers, but there were intersecting points along the way - including folk-rock genius Bob Dylan, who has a history with both music pioneers.

Fey and Tuft will be recognized with a Hall of Fame dinner at the Del Ward Athletic Center on the University of Colorado at Boulder campus at 3 p.m. Feb. 12.

An Interview with Michael Allen - JSG's New Executive Director
The Denver Musician
Winter, 2011

Chris Daniels
Michael Allen, performing at
a Tiny Tots concert
The Junior Symphony Guild has introduced..Denver area children to..live orchestral music for more than 50 years and is a major employer of DMA..members. This year, JSG's Inside the Orchestra (ISO) program will bring its 15 piece orchestra to 34 schools. JSG's Tiny Tots program is geared for pre-school children and utilizes a 33 piece orchestra,..
which will perform an additional 11 services. The American Symphony Orchestra League (now League of American Orchestras) has recognized JSG's Inside the Orchestra program as "best in the nation" for their style of educational outreach. Deserving credit goes to Tom Jensen who has been JSG's Music Director since 1986...

Mike Allen was recently named as JSG's first ever Executive Director after many years as the JSG tuba player. Among many other things, he has broad experience as a contractor of large ensembles, and also manages the Boulder Brass and its publishing enterprise. Interestingly, Mike brings a practical perspective to the job that few in arts management can claim. He has dedicated more years of service on union committees than anyone would care to count, including multiple years as chair of the Boulder Phil and Colorado Ballet contract negotiation committees. In his first months as JSG's top executive, Mike completed a new collective bargaining agreement with the Denver Musicians Association. But this time, he is signing the agreement as a management representative, after ensuring to the JSG board of directors that this is the best agreement to serve the interests of the organization. At a time when the symphonic world is looking to "new industry models," this makes for worthy subject matter for an interview:

Clarinetist Don Ambler honored by his choir and Colorado Symphony
Chris Daniels
Don Ambler
By John Ingold
The Denver Post
12/11/2011

Musically, the scene before Don Ambler was chaotic - a family dinner table just before grace.

The 41 clarinetists in the Colorado Clarinet Choir were each warming up in their own way in the lobby of Boettcher Concert Hall. Fragments of melody argued with methodical scales. Reedy flutters competed against deep, airy sighs.

Then Ambler raised his baton, just a touch, and the choir quieted.

For nearly four decades, Ambler has overseen the choir, so long that clarinetists who started in the choir as his students have grown to become professionals and teachers and even retirees, but still return to play with the group. And there is no doubt that Ambler, who played with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra for 30 years and has taught hundreds to play the clarinet, is its patriarch.

Lionsgate's Runaway Scoring of "The Hunger Games"

When the American Federation of Musicians (AFM) discovered that entertainment company Lionsgate had made preparations to go to London to do the score for a uniquely American movie, The Hunger Games, International President Ray Hair contacted Lionsgate music executives and protested. He asked the company to stay in North America and do the score with AFM musicians, under a Union agreement like those the company has with the actors, writers, directors and stage crew. When the production heads refused to budge, Hair pushed back, taking Lionsgate to task in a video clip released today.
AFM President Ray Hair Blasts Lionsgate and Hunger Games
AFM President Ray Hair Blasts Lionsgate and Hunger Games

"The movie takes place in the future, in Appalachia," Hair explains. "But for the Americana, Appalachian-style music the movie needs,  Lionsgate is going to Europe, so that the company can escape having to provide health care and pension contributions, fair wages, and royalty payments - benefits that everyone else working on The Hunger Games will most certainly receive." Running away to lower wage, benefit-free, non-union settings enables producers to avoid paying fair wages, residual payments. and other benefits that are standard fare for workers up and down the line in the television and film industry."

"The new AFM administration is committed to reaching out and publicizing the advantages of hiring AFM musicians and exposing the immoral, unethical, and unjust practice of looking to professional musicians to fatten the wallets of entertainment industry executives," said Hair. "Lionsgate can afford to do the right thing for musicians. They do it for everyone else," he said.

The Hunger Games was filmed in North Carolina on tax subsidies, says Hair. "It's not right for a $2 billion company like Lionsgate to go to Europe on taxpayer dollars and deprive the finest musicians in the world-AFM musicians-of a decent living," Hair said. "It's an American movie, with American actors, and American crews, with a soundtrack that's uniquely American, going to Europe to record the music. It's just plain wrong."

If you stand with us, CLICK HERE to sign our petition asking Lionsgate to record "The Hunger Games" film scores in the United States with all the fair wages, benefits and protections that an AFM agreement affords.
Jazz Musicians Start a Pension Push
By JAMES C. McKINLEY Jr. Published: December 12, 2011
NY Times

New York City's musicians' union has begun leafleting outside a major jazz club, the first salvo in what union leaders say is a campaign to gain pension benefits and
a minimum wage for jazz artists.

The campaign began quietly last Thursday night, when four members of Local 802 of the American Federation of Musicians stood in the cold outside the Blue Note in
Greenwich Village and handed out leaflets with the headline  "Justice for Jazz Artists!" Musicians continued passing out information outside the Blue Note over the weekend and  said they would do so again starting on Thursday.

"It's just a sin that we have no pension," said Keisha St. Joan, 72, a jazz vocalist who was distributing leaflets. "I will not have a pension before I die."

Pianist looking to form jazz trio
I am looking for a base or cello player and a drummer to form a jazz trio. I can perform 200 songs, and can keep the melody and major harmonies moving. I've played solo during the last 15 years, which has been fun, but I think greater opportunities are available to groups. The last gig I did was at the Wolf Rock Steakhouse in Keystone, Colorado.

My last jazz group was the Equinox Quartet, which, among many other gigs, backed Flash Cadillac in Vail, played for eight weeks at the Denver Playboy Club penthouse in the old Radisson hotel on Grant Street, and Tulagi's in Boulder. Prior to my trio I played in the group Cancion, run by Frank Wexler, in and around Denver. Prior to that I played in the Blue Jazzmen Trio, which got a write-up in the Denver Post, performing, among many other places from Colorado to Illinois. I was also a finalist in the Liberace Piano Contest in 1986.

My main purpose in playing is to become recognized, earn a decent income, and have a lot of fun. I have an album out-"Classically Blue"-entirely of my own compositions, some of which have aired on KVOD. I also wrote a song for my friend, Eric Hererra, who recorded it on his album, "A New Life." If you click on his website, manywindsmusic.com and select his album from the main page you can also hear "Warrior Sunrise," the song that I wrote for him. If you  select  "jazz" from the menu and select my piano icon you can hear samples of my originals.

House Republicans Scrooge Jobless Workers
Dec. 21, 2011

House Republicans yesterday voted to kill a bipartisan Senate bill that would have extended unemployment insurance (UI) for long-term jobless workers. They refused to pay for UI with a small tax on millionaires, and millions of jobless workers will lose their UI lifeline Jan. 1. Now House members are back home for the holidays, and workers got the shaft.

House Republicans early this morning blocked a vote on a bipartisan Senate bill that extends unemployment insurance (UI) for long-term jobless workers. The current program expires Dec. 31. Says AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka: "The two things House Republicans seem to be most passionate about are protecting millionaires from having to pay taxes and cutting unemployment benefits for the jobless."

Airlines Fail to Ground Democratic Union Elections
Dec. 19, 2011

The aviation industry, led by Delta Airlines and backed by Republican lawmakers, has been fighting a new democratic union election rule since the National Mediation Board issued it in 2010. But Friday, the U.S. Court of Appeals upheld the rule that says elections will be decided by the majority of votes cast, just like every other election, from city council to the presidency. How radical.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
