Hostile Nonprofit Takeovers
By Pete Vriesenga

The sudden, September exodus of twenty CSO board members will be remembered as a fortuitous change for the better, creating a welcome opening for new and returning leaders who are committed to building the orchestra's future and maintaining stature as a world-class orchestra. Our community is deeply thankful for this show of support and direction from true patrons of the arts. This was not the case in recent years while the orchestra was under the powerful grip of individuals in pursuit of personal agendas and pointless, anti-union ideology.

The latest twist in this sordid story is a vindictive, politically-charged  editorial by resigned CSO board members Heather K. Miller and Bruce Clinton that ran in the Denver Post on November 13. Former board members Martha Clinton, Steve Holtze, Bernard Schotters, Kevin Duncan and Gary Lutz contributed to this editorial that lashes out at the very organization they were sworn to support only weeks ago. In an effort to cover their tracks and personal board failings, they go on to blame the Musicians Union that is "more focused on preserving an unrealistic labor contract than preserving the future of the symphony and their very jobs."

Miller and Clinton claim that "Under the leadership of former president and CEO Jim Palermo, executive salaries were cut and creative programs were designed to expand the symphony's audience appeal." That would be an excellent point if it were true. But the facts show that from 2009 and 2011, costs for orchestra, artistic and chorus declined from 75% to 65% of total costs (decrease of $339,000) while admin/marketing/development increased from 25% to 35% (increase of $1,480,000) during the same period. At the bargaining table we repeatedly asked Palermo for any examples where mangement executives would be sharing the sacrifice that he was forcing upon the musicans. Palermo gave no example, and in fact responded by saying that he must reserve the right to give his top executives raises as he sees fit.

Miller & Clinton also blame the Union for selectively leaking their in-house "Sustainability Study" to the press, which in of itself was a concerted effort to blame the union for anything and everything that could possibly go wrong with a symphony orchestra. Fabricated charges that the union somehow leaked their Sustainability Study or that the union is protecting an unrealistic labor contract may well have come from the moon. The record clearly shows that these board members were determined to shut the orchestra down regardless of whether the musicians agreed to their demands or not. The shameful truth is that these board members resigned their positions in September as the musicians conceded to their demand for a $530,000 wage concession, not to mention their seemingly impossible deadline to accomplish this within 4 days.

Other Orchestras Fear Paying Price for Philadelphia Pension Crisis

A great orchestra's glory lies partly in continuity, the passing of musical traditions among generations of longstanding members. And a good pension in the precarious world of the arts is one element that helps keep players ensconced in their chairs, ensuring that handoff of artistic heritage.

The storied Philadelphia Orchestra had one of the better pension plans around. But now the orchestra, burdened by tens of millions of dollars in pension obligations it says it cannot afford, is using bankruptcy court to avoid paying for them.

Colorado Springs Philharmonic performing at financial peak

by Amy Gillentine
The Colorado Springs Business Journal

Published: November 22,2011

The Colorado Springs Philharmonic seems to be hitting all the right notes these days.

Executive director Nathan Newbrough made bold changes early in his tenure that have resulted in more music and bigger audiences.

Newbrough inherited an orchestra that was coming out of bankruptcy and stilled mired in financial difficulties. While the former director put it back on stage, Newbrough managed to increase its audience and its musical offerings.

"We still aren't out of the woods," he said. "But I'd say our day-to-day challenges have evened out. We've become an arts organization people can depend on."

Newbrough created that organization by focusing on three things: the staff, the type of performances and season ticket sales.

Three years later, he says all are striking a chord.

Chris DanielsAfter my little more than 11 years and 2,604 reviews, features and news stories plus countless Best Bets and briefs of all kinds, the time has come for me to say goodbye to The Denver Post.

Like 18 of my colleagues here, I have made the tough decision to accept a buyout. I will soon be moving to Chicago to join my wife, who is pursuing a graduate degree in writing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

My departure comes just a few weeks after I marked my 25th anniversary as a professtional journalist and critic, first in Omaha and now Denver - a run that has never failed to be enormously stimulating and exciting.

Pianist looking to form jazz trio
I am looking for a base or cello player and a drummer to form a jazz trio. I can perform 200 songs, and can keep the melody and major harmonies moving. I've played solo during the last 15 years, which has been fun, but I think greater opportunities are available to groups. The last gig I did was at the Wolf Rock Steakhouse in Keystone, Colorado.

My last jazz group was the Equinox Quartet, which, among many other gigs, backed Flash Cadillac in Vail, played for eight weeks at the Denver Playboy Club penthouse in the old Radisson hotel on Grant Street, and Tulagi's in Boulder. Prior to my trio I played in the group Cancion, run by Frank Wexler, in and around Denver. Prior to that I played in the Blue Jazzmen Trio, which got a write-up in the Denver Post, performing, among many other places from Colorado to Illinois. I was also a finalist in the Liberace Piano Contest in 1986.

My main purpose in playing is to become recognized, earn a decent income, and have a lot of fun. I have an album out-"Classically Blue"-entirely of my own compositions, some of which have aired on KVOD. I also wrote a song for my friend, Eric Hererra, who recorded it on his album, "A New Life." If you click on his website, manywindsmusic.com and select his album from the main page you can also hear "Warrior Sunrise," the song that I wrote for him. If you  select  "jazz" from the menu and select my piano icon you can hear samples of my originals.

Scrooge of the Year
Jobs with Justice

Dear Peter,

The holiday season is fast approaching, and around here that means one thing: it's time for our annual "Scrooge of the Year" election!

Jobs with Justice national is now accepting nominations for the greediest, most cold-hearted company, CEO, or politician of the year for our eleventh annual "Scrooge of the Year" election.

Nominate your candidate for the 2011 National Scrooge of the Year.

Last year's Scrooge of the Year was the U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for leading the Senate in aggressively blocking almost all legislation from passing, especially laws that would help working people.  Other past winners of this dubious honor include:  WalMart, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and the Wall Street executives who broke our economy.

We'll pick the top nominees and start the national Scrooge of the Year election shortly after Thanksgiving.  Be on the lookout for the start of the national election and keep an eye on your inbox to see if your local Jobs with Justice coalition is planning a party to elect a local Scrooge.

Republican Might Quit Labor Board
By STEVEN GREENHOUSE
NY Times
Published: November 22, 2011

The National Labor Relations Board, the subject of particularly intense partisan sniping this year, could soon be completely paralyzed.

The labor board's sole Republican member, Brian E. Hayes, has threatened to resign to deny the N.L.R.B. the three-person quorum it needs to make any decisions, according to board officials. Mr. Hayes has made his threat expressly to block the Democratic-dominated board from adopting new rules to speed up unionization elections, which the board's other current members, both Democrats, intend to pass Nov. 30.

Real Target of Attacks on NLRB: Working People
Nov. 30, 2011

The unprecedented attacks on the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) are aimed at workers' rights and putting the nation's labor laws "into cold storage," Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.) told a special AFL-CIO forum this morning examining the assault on the key workers' rights agency.

Nine Demands and the 99%

From New York City to Oakland, peaceful protests are under threat. Now, more than ever, we need to show our support for those fighting for economic justice.

Working people are sick and tired of seeing a political system and an economy that only works for the very wealthiest. For too long, our leaders have worked on behalf of the top 1%, leaving everyone else behind.

Now, across the country, the other 99% are standing up. In the face of suppression, regular people are using their freedom of speech and assembly to make their voices heard. We need to rein in the Big Banks, put Americans back to work and restore democracy. It's time to bring the corporate agenda to an end. Sign on to the 9 Demands of the 99% and add your voice to this important call.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
