Dean Bushnell Orchestra Celebrating 60 Years!
| The Denver Musician, Fall, 2011
 |
Colorado State College Student Union - 1951
| In the fall of 1951, the Dean Bushnell Orchestra was formed as a partnership between Dean Bushnell and Vic Fleischmann, an exceptional trumpet teacher and performer in Greeley, CO. Dean purchased the library from Sammy Haven (9-piece tenor band) who was retiring from the business. Included with the library were a PA system, stands and incidentals, all for $150. With much work and effort, the Dean Bushnell Orchestra (DBO) played its first gig in October 1951. Dean and Vic Fleischmann, along with his wonderful and supportive wife, Helen, booked the band. Soon they were playing every weekend while their new agency, the Rocky Mountain Orchestra Service, was booking seven other groups throughout Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming and South Dakota. By 1952, the DBO was performing summers at the Riverside Ballroom in Estes Park, a notable gig that continued through 1962.

Ohio Turns Back a Law Limiting Unions' Rights
| By SABRINA TAVERNISE Published: November 8, 2011 COLUMBUS, Ohio - A year after Republicans swept legislatures across the country, voters in Ohio delivered their verdict Tuesday on a centerpiece of the conservative legislative agenda, striking down a law that restricted public workers' rights to bargain collectively. The landslide vote to repeal the bill - 62 percent to 38 percent, according to preliminary results from Ohio's secretary of state - was a slap to Gov. John R. Kasich, a Republican who had championed the law as a tool for cities to cut costs. The bill passed in March on a wave of enthusiasm among Republicans fresh from victories. A similar bill also passed in Wisconsin. Read On

Orchestra asks court to stop pension fund from harassing donors
|
November 08, 2011|By Peter Dobrin, Inquirer Music Critic Philadelphia Orchestra Association to U.S. Bankruptcy Court: Please stop the national musicians' pension fund from harassing our donors. In a motion filed last week in the association's Chapter 11 case, orchestra management says the American Federation of Musicians and Employers Pension Fund is seeking financial information from 16 philanthropists "only in a continued effort to embarrass and harass the [association] and their donors." Such an inquiry will have a "tremendous and devastating impact" on fund-raising, the association asserts. "If donors find themselves subject to litigation and have to incur related expenses solely as a result of their benevolence, they and others who contemplate supporting the Debtors' organization may be deterred from making future gifts," the filing states. "Top of the Hill" Faculty Concert Series at Swallow Hill, Featuring Perpetual Motion
Announcing a performance by Denver's premiere violin-jazz combo, Perpetual Motion at Swallow Hill Music's renowned "Top of the Hill" Concert Series on Saturday, November 19 at 8:00 pm.
Perpetual Motion specializes in acoustic world fusion, a vibrant blend of Central and South American folk, progressive jazz, blues and Rock and Roll. Their original music and unique arrangements of classic rock favorites evoke the sounds of Jean-Luc Ponty and Michael Hedges, Stephane Grappelli and Laurence Juber. Violinist Josie Quick and guitarist Tom Carleno are joined by Blake Eberhard on bass and Ed Contreras on drums and percussion.
Swallow Hill Music Association is a gem in the cultural crown of the Rocky Mountain region- extremely precious and exceedingly rare. It is precious because it promotes the joy of learning and listening to roots music. It's rare because it is one of very few organizations in the country focusing on preserving a unique musical heritage. Community and audience support of the "Top of the Hill" Concert Series and other events at Swallow Hill help support local professional independent musicians, particularly in fields of Jazz, Folk and Singer-Songwriter.

An All-American Nightmare
|
This Is What Defeat Looks Like By Tom Engelhardt tomdispatch.com posted November 8, 2011 How about a moment of silence for the passing of the American Dream? M.R.I.C. (May it rest in carnage.) No, I'm not talking about the old dream of opportunity that involved homeownership, a better job than your parents had, a decent pension, and all the rest of the package that's so yesterday, so underwater, so OWS. I'm talking about a far more recent dream, a truly audacious one that's similarly gone with the wind. I'm talking about George W. Bush's American Dream. If people here remember the invasion of Iraq -- and most Americans would undoubtedly prefer to forget it -- what's recalled is kited intelligence, Saddam Hussein's nonexistent nuclear arsenal, dumb and even dumber decisions, a bloody civil war, dead Americans, crony corporations, a trillion or more taxpayer dollars flushed down the toilet... well, you know the story. What few care to remember was that original dream -- call it The Dream -- and boy, was it a beaut! Read On |

5 Ways to go Fair Trade for Thanksgiving
|
When I was kid, my favorite Thanksgiving blessing was the one that ended, "and bless all those whose hands made and grew this food so that we could enjoy this day in celebration of our blessings." I would picture all the people around the world who had a hand in setting our table.
This Thanksgiving, many will take that same moment to consider all the human connections involved in assembling such a meal. Maybe your cranberries, or potatoes, or turkey came from a farmer you know at your local market, or maybe you traveled to a locally owned pumpkin patch to pick the perfect main ingredient for your pie.
For other ingredients that aren't so easy to find locally, there are often Fair Trade options that you can choose, to create a world where everyone, everywhere can have a fair deal. The Fair Trade premium associated with these products helps producers build a better life for their families and communities.
The first Fair Trade products to be certified in the US -- coffee, tea, and chocolate -- are getting easier and easier to find, even in conventional grocery stores. If you don't see them, please ask for them. Below, please find links to companies in our Green Business Network™ who supply some harder-to-find Fair Trade products. Look for additional green and Fair Trade options at our Green Pages online, and ask your local supermarkets to stock these items too.
1. Spices
This past September, Frontier Natural Products Co-op greatly expanded its offering of Fair Trade spices. In addition to the vanilla (beans and extract) already available, Frontier worked closely with Sri Lankan growers to add whole cloves, ginger root powder, cinnamon sticks and powder, whole black peppercorns, ground white and black pepper, ground nutmeg, and ground turmeric root.
2. Olive oil
Two companies in our business network offer Fair Trade olive oil from the Palestinian territories. Holy Land Olive Oil buys directly from farmer coops, or through partner organizations such as the Palestinian Agricultural Relief Committee. Canaan Fair Trade works directly with the cooperatives of the Palestine Fair Trade Organization to offer not only olive oil, but also whole olives, tapanade, couscous, and thyme.
3. Rice and quinoa
For your side dishes, consider creations made with Fair Trade rice from the producer cooperatives of rural northeastern Thailand. Alter-Eco offers four kinds of Thai rice, along with four kinds of Fair Trade quinoa from Bolivia. Andean Naturals (a business funded by New Resource Bank, another member of our business network) also offers a wide selection of Fair Trade quinoa. (Join our "break up with your mega-bank" campaign to help finance more businesses like Andean Naturals!)
4. Sugar
For your Thanksgiving baking, consider sugar from Fair Trade farmers. Find sugar from Paraguay from Dean's Beans, and sugar from the Phillipines from Alter-Eco. Simply Organic offers baking mixes -- carrot cake, brownie mix, spice cookies -- that incorporate Fair Trade sugar or cocoa.
5. Soap Okay, so this one's not exactly a Fair Trade item for your dining room table, but you'll need it for cleaning house before the guests arrive, and after they leave. Dr. Bronner's soaps are made with all Fair Trade oils.
Find more fairly traded products in the Fair Trade category at Green Pages online, and have a happy and healthy Thanksgiving.
Thanks for all you do,
Alisa Gravitz, Executive Director, Green America
P.S. Your donation helps us fund all of our green-economy work -- our green-business program, our Fair Trade program, our "Break Up With Your Mega-Bank" campaign, and more. Thanks for your support.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
