New Colorado Symphony chief Jim Copenhaver talks about the orchestra's challenges and hopes
|
By Kyle MacMillan Denver Post Fine Arts Critic 10/30/2011 01:00:00 AM MDT
 | Jim Copenhaver | After weeks of uncertainty and fears that the Colorado Symphony could even fold, interim chief executive Jim Copenhaver vows to return the orchestra to financial viability and restore public confidence. Three weeks into a job he first held in 1990-94 and twice later on an temporary basis, Copenhaver is working overtime to make sense of the organization's muddled finances, revise its 2011-12 budget and reach out to old and new contributors. The message from him and Jerome and Mary Rossick Kern, who recently returned as co-chairs of the board of trustees, is simple and direct: "We're assuring people that we know what we're doing," he said. "We know how to fix it. We don't know all the answers yet, but we're going to get it fixed. And we've done it before. We're not new kids on this block." Read On

DO NOT ACCEPT WORK FROM THE LOUISVILLE ORCHESTRA, INC.
|
Dear friends and colleagues, SPREAD THE WORD: As we all know, the musicians of the Louisville Orchestra have been engaged in a lengthy negotiation with their management. They have repeatedly been threatened by their board with being replaced by other musicians. And now, after a final ultimatum, the Louisville Orchestra, Inc. has begun recruiting replacement musicians. DO NOT ACCEPT WORK FROM THE LOUISVILLE ORCHESTRA, INC. Both the Louisville Orchestra, Inc. and the Kentucky Opera have been placed on the American Federation of Musicians' (AFM) International Unfair List, and accepting work from these two groups could generate fines and penalties. But it is not just the Unfair List that should deter anyone from accepting this work--the fact is that it would simply be wrong to do so. Any musician accepting such work would not be serving the cause of art in America, or serving their career and family. Musicians accepting work as replacements would be taking food out of the mouths of fellow musicians, as well as depriving them and their children of health insurance. The members of ICSOM, ROPA, and OCSM comprise a great number of orchestral musicians in North America, and we have thousands of students. Please educate your students, and the leaders at your music schools, of the importance of this effort. If the egregious and despicable actions of Louisville Orchestra CEO Rob Birman, and Board Chair Chuck Maisch were to succeed, then no orchestra in North America would be safe from such attacks. Any musician accepting such work would be building a career on quick sand. Please post this message in your studios, and please send it to your students everywhere, as well as the colleagues in your orchestra who might not be subscribed to the ICSOM, ROPA, or OCSM news lists. Post it backstage at work. Post it on your Facebook pages. Spread the message everywhere that the musicians of ICSOM, ROPA, and OCSM will always stand together The symphonic musicians of North America perform as a united network of friends. It is crucial that we stand together on this issue, not only for the musicians of Louisville, but for the future of musicians everywhere. In solidarity, Bruce Ridge ICSOM Chairman

AFM and Recording Industry Strike New Three-Year Labor Deal
|
The American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada (AFM) and the major recording companies struck a new three-year labor deal just before midnight on October 27, 2011. The new agreement, which becomes effective upon ratification, calls for scale wage increases across the board, as well as other economic improvements, in contrast to the current climate of deep concessionary bargaining in many industries.
The AFM has had a decades-long labor relationship with the recording industry but negotiations in this round were led by new spokespersons on both sides. The new Sound Recording Labor Agreement represents the first industry-wide agreement concluded by the new administration of AFM International President Ray Hair. Industry was represented by new labor counsel Bernard Plum of the firm of Proskauer Rose LLP in New York. The two sides aired issues of deep concern with unsparing frankness, but in atmosphere of cooperation aimed at reaching constructive solutions to the problems faced by both sides in the troubled sound recording industry. AFM and AFTRA Alert Members to SiriusXM's Anti-Artist Licensing Offer
|
Los Angeles and New York (October 27, 2011) --- The American Federation of Musicians (AFM) and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) alerted members of their respective unions about SiriusXM's "direct license" deal, which would set up independent labels to pay a performer's share to the copyright owner - the independent record label - rather than the performer. Since the beginning of satellite radio, Sirius and XM broadcast music under the statutory license established by Congress, and pay the required royalties to SoundExchange. SoundExchange pays half of those royalties directly to artists (45%) and to the AFM/AFTRA Fund for distribution to session performers (5%) and half to the record labels. Artists - whether featured royalty artists or session singers or players - benefit from this system because performers get the 50% share Congress allocated to them directly and without recoupment. Artists and labels both benefit from SoundExchange's transparent operations, low administrative costs, vigorous efforts to set fair license rates for music, and responsiveness to artist and label concerns. SoundExchange is governed by a Board composed equally of label and artist representatives, including the unions. SiriusXM is seeking to undo all that, and lower the rates for music on the backs of artists and musicians. "SiriusXM wants to bypass SoundExchange and pay the artists' and musicians' share to the label," explains AFM President Ray Hair. "That move would send all 100% of the license fee to the label, cutting direct payment to performers right out of the equation." Read On

Wil Swindler's Elevenet, 11/5
| Saturday November 5 at 7:30pm Rocky Mountain Center for Musical Arts 200 East Baseline Rd, Lafayette, CO 303.839.5100 Acclaimed composer, Wil Swindler brings his Elevenet to the Colorado Music Festival Kaleidoscope Concert Series. Tickets available at www.jazz11.com and www.comusic.org/goto/kaleidoscope_concerts. This concert performance will feature new works by Wil Swindler including new arrangements of music by Björk, John Coltrane and Chris Potter. Swindler's original music and arrangements defy expectations, combining traditional jazz concepts with a thoroughly modern aesthetic. Drawing inspiration from the gamut of jazz's historic spectrum as well as modern art-music, both popular and classical, the Elevenet presents a unique concert experience. "In the ever-evolving language of jazz, artists are presented with the special challenge of providing forward-thinking music that never loses its identity and its roots," Swindler says. "We take this idea very seriously in our approach with the Elevenet and seek to move our genre forward with the utmost respect for what has come before." Adding to the intrigue of this special ensemble is its remarkable instrumentation. The Elevenet features traditional jazz instruments (Alto and Tenor Saxophones, Trumpets, and a Trombone) as well as less traditional sounds including Bass Clarinet, Alto Flute, and French horn. Paired with a traditional jazz rhythm section, this unique ensemble allows for the power of a big band and the intimacy of a jazz quartet or even a classical chamber ensemble. Featured musicians for this show include: Peter Sommer, Darren Kramer, Dana Landry, and Paul Romaine. Wil Swindler is the recipient of the 2008 Gil Evans Fellowship and has performed with jazz greats Toshiko Akiyoshi, Arturo Sandoval, Steve Wilson, and John Fedchock. The Elevenet has one CD, Universe B, available from OA2 Records. For more info, visit www.jazz11.com or www.wilswindler.com.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
