Louisville Orchestra Management Losing Control of Labor Negotiations
|
Submitted by Trevor Johnson, Louisville Orchestra Oct. 24, 2011 Contact: Kim Tichenor NEWS RELEASE In moves that have led to confusion and the resignation of at least one board member, the Louisville Orchestra Inc.'s attorney has prohibited communication between the orchestra's musicians, and its board members, administrators and board leadership. After a series of weekend communications between the board's president and the musicians' negotiation team seemed close to forming a deal to settle the institution's continuing contract difficulties, the orchestra's board members were told Monday that the musicians refused the contract proposal and that the institution will attempt to assemble an orchestra with pick-up musicians. The contradictory messages began Friday night, when, in exchanges between LO board president Chuck Maisch and musicians' negotiation committee chair Kim Tichenor through mediator Ralph Craviso, the musicians responded favorably to a management-sponsored proposal for 55 musicians. This effectively reversed the musicians' proposal for a minimum of 60 musicians in the orchestra, and represented a tremendous concession from the immediate past contract that called for 71 musicians. But by Saturday afternoon, Maisch and Tichenor's informal agreement was seemingly revoked by management lawyer James U. Smith III. Saturday, Smith wrote Tichenor to communicate that since his previously established deadline of 4 p.m. Friday had not been met, Smith considered the musicians to have rejected the proposal for 55 musicians. On Sunday, Maisch withdrew his prior conditional agreement in a letter to Tichenor. Monday morning, Smith notified the musicians that the management's offer had been further cut, from 55 musicians to only 50 musicians, and forbade any communication between the musicians, and board members or Louisville Orchestra administrators.

Orchestra Extends Final Offer to Players While Opera Talks End
|
Gabe Bullard October 20, 2011 WFPL News
The Louisville Orchestra and the Kentucky Opera have each taken firm stands against the local musicians union.
Orchestra management has given the players what they call the final offer for a new contract. It calls for any musicians who are currently in Louisville to be signed to a new contract, with an agreement that enough players will quit or retire by 2013 for the orchestra to only have 55 members.
The management and musicians have spent the last year debating how many players were necessary for a financially sustainable and aesthetically successful orchestra. Last month, the management proposed a contract that would hire 54 musicians, then add one more in subsequent years. The musicians countered with an offer to sign 57 players and add three more in later seasons. They said the offer would allow all the musicians from the previous season who haven't left town for other work to play for the orchestra.
The management rejected that offer, but has put forward a new proposal.

Chicago Symphony posts a deficit for last season
|
BY ANDREW PATNER October 19, 2011 5:04PM
SunTimes
For first time in five years, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra finds itself in the red.
At its annual meeting Wednesday afternoon, the CSO Association reported a deficit of $927,000 on operating expenses of $64.7 million for the fiscal year that ended June 30.
Riccardo Muti's first season as CSO music director saw a record level of fund-raising success. But his two extended absences for illness, and an unprecedented number of cancellations by solo recitalists and an entire sold-out visit by the Cleveland Orchestra meant lost revenues that resulted in the CSO's first deficit since 2006.

Patti LuPone Sat, Oct 29, 7:30PM This First Lady of the American Broadway theater has more Tony® awards and film credits than you can shake a stick at. Lead roles in Gypsy, Sweeney Todd, Anything Goes, and Oliver! are just a few of this legendary performer's triumphs. LuPone sky-rocketed to international stardom in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Evita and has never looked back. Television credits include Frasier, Law & Order, and ABC's Life Goes On and have solidified this versatile artist's universal appeal. Patti LuPone pays tribute to the Broadway that raised her in selections from her favorite musicals. Tickets
All Dvorak This all Dvorák program features audience favorite Natasha Paremski in the composer's piano concerto, a work that rivals those of his peers Brahms, Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky. The closing work is the cheery 8th Symphony, which draws its inspiration from the Bohemian folk music Dvorák so loved. Scott Yoo, conductor Natasha Paremski, piano More to Live For In partnership with the Denver Film Society and Love Hope Strength - the world's leading rock-n-roll cancer charity - the Starz Denver Film Festival will present a special, one-night-only Denver Arts Week Film & Music Event at the Boettcher Concert Hall on Wednesday, November 9 at 7:00 p.m. The evening features a screening of More to Live For, followed by a tribute concert to legendary jazz musician, Michael Brecker. Second Tuesdays at Trinity Concert Series, 10/25
| Our bonus concert on October 25 will feature musicians from the Colorado Symphony in an intriguing and thought-provoking evening of string quartet music. Violinists Erik Peterson and David Waldman, violist Kelly Shanafelt, and cellist Thomas Heinrich will perform Schubert's String Quartet #14 in D minor (Death and the Maiden) and George Crumb's Black Angels for Electric String Quartet. Schubert's D minor string quartet is haunted by allusions to loss and grief, with the second movement consisting of five variations on the poem, "Death and the Maiden." Crumb's electric string quartet is subtitled Thirteen images from the dark land and as the composer himself noted, is probably the only quartet to have been inspired by the Vietnam War. The use of electric string instruments is not only unusual, but gives an other-worldly effect, and Crumb has the performers also playing various percussion instruments and water-filled crystal goblets for a "glass harmonica" effect. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students. Parking is free. Trinity Presbyterian Church 7755 Vance Drive, Arvada 80003 For more information, please visit the church website at www.tpcarvada.org or call 303-422-3656 x25.

Wil Swindler's Elevenet, 11/5
| Saturday November 5 at 7:30pm Rocky Mountain Center for Musical Arts 200 East Baseline Rd, Lafayette, CO 303.839.5100 Acclaimed composer, Wil Swindler brings his Elevenet to the Colorado Music Festival Kaleidoscope Concert Series. Tickets available at www.jazz11.com and www.comusic.org/goto/kaleidoscope_concerts. This concert performance will feature new works by Wil Swindler including new arrangements of music by Björk, John Coltrane and Chris Potter. Swindler's original music and arrangements defy expectations, combining traditional jazz concepts with a thoroughly modern aesthetic. Drawing inspiration from the gamut of jazz's historic spectrum as well as modern art-music, both popular and classical, the Elevenet presents a unique concert experience. "In the ever-evolving language of jazz, artists are presented with the special challenge of providing forward-thinking music that never loses its identity and its roots," Swindler says. "We take this idea very seriously in our approach with the Elevenet and seek to move our genre forward with the utmost respect for what has come before." Adding to the intrigue of this special ensemble is its remarkable instrumentation. The Elevenet features traditional jazz instruments (Alto and Tenor Saxophones, Trumpets, and a Trombone) as well as less traditional sounds including Bass Clarinet, Alto Flute, and French horn. Paired with a traditional jazz rhythm section, this unique ensemble allows for the power of a big band and the intimacy of a jazz quartet or even a classical chamber ensemble. Featured musicians for this show include: Peter Sommer, Darren Kramer, Dana Landry, and Paul Romaine. Wil Swindler is the recipient of the 2008 Gil Evans Fellowship and has performed with jazz greats Toshiko Akiyoshi, Arturo Sandoval, Steve Wilson, and John Fedchock. The Elevenet has one CD, Universe B, available from OA2 Records. For more info, visit www.jazz11.com or www.wilswindler.com.

New Film Directed by Stephen James Taylor
|
"Erv is indeed a genius, highly deserving of wide recognition. All who have been touched by him are deeply affected. This vid explains the basics of microtunings in a very entertaining, but not dumbed down, way...Stephen has done a great job. Do yourself a favor and take a few minutes to check it out." Neil Haverstick I guess this is my official announcement of the launch of a project that (until a couple months ago) has been pretty much a full time job for the last 2 years. I've been working with Gary David and Marcus Hobbs for the last 5 years trying to figure out a way to explain to the general public the groundbreaking work of Ervin Wilson, a "musical cosmologist" with whom we have all studied. His contribution to music is very deep and we believe represents a major evolution in the future of music and other fields as well. I've put in at least 5000 hours filming, editing, scoring and narrating etc., what was supposed to be a short documentary but ending up being a "transmedia" project including an ipad app, an album, and some commissioned artwork all parked on an elaborate website dedicated to his work. The main event at the website is a 21 minute film that gives the viewer a chance to directly experience the effect of his musical innovations. The site has 11 other explanatory videos, interviews, and more to come as well. I'd love it if everyone receiving this email would do me a favor and go to the site, leaving your comments under the different films and mp3's. You input will largely influence how we proceed with all this so please be honest. I am in the middle of an intensive Disney project right now and have not been able to get back to friends and family very fast but please let me know if this material in any way connects with you or not. We'd appreciate if you sent the website to as many people as you think would be interested, and/or post on your Facebook page. Thanks for taking the time to check it out. Thanks so much, Stephen James Taylor

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
